Magister Curationis - MCur / Background: Nursing as a profession is based on firm knowledge, values, clinical skills and attitudes. In the current dynamic healthcare system nursing students are challenged to be insightful and have clinical reasoning and psychomotor skills in order to apply theory to practice. Clinical teaching is therefore considered an essential part of the undergraduate nursing curriculum, as it provides the opportunity for students to apply theory to practice in the skills laboratory and then to transfer it into real life situations. Nursing students spend time in the clinical practice environment learning the skills and values of the nursing profession, with the goal of achieving the clinical learning outcomes, as prescribed by their nursing education institution and the South African Nursing Council. During this time nursing students depend on the support of clinical supervisors and nursing staff in the clinical practice environment to meet their learning outcomes.
Clinical supervisors for the undergraduate nursing programme, at the university included in the study, are tasked with clinical teaching in the skills laboratory, supervision of nursing students in clinical practice and assessment of learning. Nonetheless, there are challenges ascertained by the clinical supervisors, which inhibits students from achieving their learning outcomes.
Purpose of the study: The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the clinical supervisor’s perception of students’ skills transfer from skills laboratory to the clinical environment.

Perceptions of clinical supervisors about their preparedness for clinical teaching at a university in the Western CapeHoffman, Margaret Ursula Marinda January 2019 (has links)
Magister Curationis - MCur / Background: Clinical supervision or clinical accompaniment is considered an integral part of nursing education and is crucial for the development of nursing students’ clinical competence. In order to achieve this, clinical supervision requires skilled human resources which vary from one educational institution to another and may include lecturers, clinical supervisors/facilitators and professional nurses.
Clinical supervisors are required to be good educators as well as excellent clinicians. In addition, they often draw on their individual, personal and professional experiences to guide their teaching to meet the demands of both the clinical and academic contexts in which they work. However, the clinical teaching model or framework used by educational institutions is often not aligned to clinical practice activities and vice versa. This poses challenges for students due to the different expectations of educators and professional nurses in practice. Inadequately prepared clinical supervisors can have a detrimental effect on the delivery of the nursing programme that may include poor clinical teaching and inadequate integration of theory and clinical competencies, which ultimately leads to poorly trained nursing students.
Aim of the study: The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of clinical supervisors regarding their preparedness for clinical teaching.
Methods: The study adopted a qualitative research approach, utilising an exploratory descriptive design. A non-probability purposive sampling method was used to select 12 clinical supervisors in the undergraduate programme. The researcher collected the data by means of semi-structured interviews with open-ended questions and analysed this data using content data analysis. Analysis of the data using ATLAS, ti 8 research software programme generated four themes and 18 categories.
Findings: The findings indicated that clinical supervisors required time to adapt to their role and improve their knowledge and skills despite them having a positive experience during their orientation. Although appreciative of the support and guidance, clinical supervisors stated that not all colleagues were supportive, which in some instances had a negative impact on interpersonal relationships. The findings furthermore indicated that clinical supervisors apply all the steps of the five phases in the skills lab methodology employed by the School of Nursing at the university where the study was conducted. Clinical supervisors are required to be well informed and committed to continuing education in order to incorporate theory into practice with the latest developments and equipment in facilities. Furthermore, the findings indicated that inconsistency and failure to attend to students’ clinical learning needs can have a negative impact on student learning.
Ethics: The researcher adhered to all principles of research ethics throughout the study.

Syftet med denna studie var att i en svensk kontext belysa handledarens roll vid grupphandledning av yrkesverksamma inom människohjälpande yrken, då detta är ett område som endast är sparsamt utforskat. Materialet inhämtades genom semi-strukturerade intervjuer med nio verksamma handledare med socionom eller psykologutbildning. De transkriberade intervjuerna bearbetades med tematisk analys. Resultatet kan övergripande beskrivas i form av en modell med fem huvudteman: handledarrollen i modellens centrum, som påverkar och påverkas av förutsättningar, förväntningar, arbetssätt och utvärderingar. Modellen illustrerar hur handledarrollen i all dess komplexitet är produkten av en hel samling olika påverkansfaktorer och beslut, där vissa har sitt ursprung i handledarens egen bakgrund, men många är beroende av det sammanhang i vilket handledaren verkar. Resultatet visar även att handledarna skiljer sig gällande fokus samt prioritering av olika funktioner i handledningen. Det formuleras sällan konkreta mål i handledningen utan innehållet styrs utifrån syfte och förväntningar, och det varierar hur och i vilken grad utvärderingar genomförs.

The experiences of male nurses in midwifery clinical training at a regional hospital in the Eastern CapeMeyer, Rushaan 27 November 2013 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the experiences of male
community service officers during midwifery clinical training. A qualitative, explorative,
descriptive and contextual design was used in order to achieve the study objectives.
Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews. Data analysis elucidated
analogous themes and categories which translated into the overall experiences of the
participants.
The study found that whilst the experience was described as beneficial, there were
overwhelming challenges in providing intimate care to female clients, dealing with
ethno-cultural aspects, meeting clinical practice requirements and the right to choose to
be part of midwifery clinical training.
Recommendations to nurse educators, clinical midwives and midwifery clinical
supervisors with regard to better support for male nurses during midwifery clinical
training emanated from the study findings / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

The thesis named "Current practice and possible ways of implementing clinical supervision in nursing" is the first doctoral dissertation establishing the concept of supervision in the Czech nursing environment. Itscentralresearch questionis as follows: How do nurses and university educators in nursing construct, interpret and practically apply theconcept ofclinical supervision and the supervisor's role in the context of nursing education at specific institutions of tertiary education and clinical nursing practice in the Czech Republic? The author draws on international theoretical literature and local empiricalevidence.Her qualitative research took the form of 26 semi-structured interviews with academic nursingeducators from the entire Czech Republic. In justified cases those are supplemented with qualitative data obtained through the study of legislative, policy and strategic documents in nursing and health care, including publicly available information and sources on clinical supervision, in order torefine the resulting picture of her interpretation of current clinical supervision practice in Czech nursing. A shift to the constructivist paradigm enabled one to conceive the term "clinical supervision" mainly in relation to learning, training and professional development of supervisees, also in the context of transformation of education and supervision not only of nurses but also of supervisors themselves in the Czech Republic. The author also focuses on the philosophical and theoretical foundations of clinical supervision and application of the postmodern approach in egalitarian clinical supervision. The empirical part of this dissertation is based on the qualitative research conducted. The author gradually presents her results as individual categoriesand relations between them that ensued from the analysed data in the process of open coding. The author draws a link between the category of implementation of clinical supervision in the context of nurses' professional education andexternal conditions, the environment and a broader professional and social-cultural context. Clinical supervision in nursing is constructed mainly as a unidisciplinaryconcept and a part of the nursing profession. The university nursing educatoris typically constructed as a role professional, but there is also an ongoing process ofdiversification, stratification, profiling and professionalization of non-academic nursing educators. Based on a content analysis of documents and post-modern philosophical-theoretical foundations and strategies of legitimizingclinical supervision, the author views the concept of clinical supervision in nursing as socially constructedand discursively legitimated. The author also defines the limitations of her research that arise from the choice of a qualitative research design. In the conclusion she outlines some future trends of clinical supervision in particular educational institutions that can be interesting and inspiring not only for supervisors but also for teachers of supervision themselves. Based on the results of her empirical analysis the author emphasises the need to integrate the theory and practice of education, clinical supervision and nursing. A comprehensive structure and methodology of system-wide implementation of clinical supervision, based on the situation of clinical nursing practice and supervision needs in the Czech Republic,should in future formthe basis of innovation of existing university programmes in nursing and approaches to the education and training of supervisors, as well as the subject of new research in clinical supervision.
