Rodrigues, Heitor de Andrade, 1983- 24 February 2014 (has links)
Orientador: Roberto Rodrigues Paes / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Educação Física / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-24T05:31:40Z (GMT). In Brazilian sporting context, in despite of the growing movement of sports coaches and the significant increase in specific courses that qualify these professionals, we can still identify a lack of knowledge available about coaching, their training and work. In the specific case of basketball, this fact is no different. Although there are pioneering proposals for training, such as courses offered by the Escola Nacional de Treinadores de Basquete (National School of Basketball Coaches), considering scientific research there is a little investigations on the basketball coaches. Due to this situation, the overall goal in this paper was to investigate the training of sports coaches, with special attention to the process of professional development for basketball coaches of the training categories. However, the specific aim in this study was to investigate the process of identity construction of the basketball coaches of the categories of training, with emphasis on the challenges, and mobilized professional knowledge. The methodology is of a qualitative nature, based on the assumptions of life history in an ethnosociological perspective, supported by the technique of narrative interview. The chosen individuals were thirteen basketball coaches linked to the training categories. The results found out that the identity construction of the researched coaches were the results of successive socializations throughout personal and professional life, the result of negotiation between relational and biographical trajectory. At the pre-professional socialization highlights the role of craft education along the basis of "sports school". In professional socialization in Physical Education course stands the importance given by the coaches to the knowledge of the field of didactics. And in professional socialization throughout their career dominates the learning experiences with more experienced coaches, as well as the construction of professional knowledge in close relation to the challenges posed by the demands of work. The conclusions point to the urgency of defining the knowledge of the coaches from an epistemology of professional practice, building the foundation for the adoption of a professional training model as opposed to the current traditional academic model in Physical Education course / Doutorado / Biodinamica do Movimento e Esporte / Doutor em Educação Física

Spiritual rituals and competitive sport outcomes: a study of South African coaches’ and elite players’ perceptions of spirituality in soccer

Dodo, Emmanuel Oluwafemi January 2013 (has links)
During sports competitions, especially soccer many players and coaches would pray before, during and after the game. Sometimes they would pray when they score a goal. The behaviour has attracted a research interest wanting to know why they do what they do often. The purpose of the study was to understand and evaluate the perceptions of coaches and elite players who continuously use spiritual rituals before, during and after soccer games to influence competitive outcomes. This study was carried out under the guidance of the following key questions; (a) Do spiritual perceptions of elite players influence outcomes of soccer competitions? (b) Does a divergence in spiritual perception between coaches and players influence competitive outcomes? and (c) Are spiritual (ritual) perceptions of soccer coaches and elite players related to religiosity/psychological interventions? In this study, a mixed method of data collection was used to eliminate the biases inherent in single method research. Specifically, qualitative and quantitative methods involving questionnaire, interview and observation supported by secondary and primary literature were used to gather information that would provide answers to the raised key questions. The results show that spiritual ritual practices would not influence the outcome of soccer competitions. Secondly, the spiritual ritual divergence among players and coaches would not influence outcomes of soccer competitions. Thirdly, the results showed that the use of spiritual rituals among players was purely for personal reasons, while the coaches used spiritual rituals as psychological intervention strategy to prepare the team before a given competitive. The overall results show that coaches and players agreed that spiritual rituals interventions are used for psychological interventions more than spiritual interventions. The implications of these findings to the players and coaches are discussed linked with future research focus.

Relationship Between Coaches' Leadership Style and Burnout

Dale, Judith A. (Judith Anne) 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between leadership behavior and perceived burnout of coaches. Head coaches from high schools and from Southeast and Southwest Conference universities were included in the sample (N=302). Coaches completed the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire, Social Desirability Scale and a demographic data sheet. Coaches were separated into two leadership behavior groups and classified as Consideration or as Initiating Structure. It was predicted that coaches in the Consideration Group would have a higher level of perceived burnout. A multivariate analysis of variance was conducted and indicated significant differences in four subscales of the MBI. Specifically, coaches in the Consideration Group scored significantly higher in the frequency and intensity dimension of the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization subscales (p<.001).

Relationship between Males' Coaching Efficacy and Prior Exposure to Sport Psychology

Villalon, Christina Ann 05 1900 (has links)
Coaching efficacy is largely influenced by mastery experiences such as formal education, coaching experience, and sport participation. Further examining specific experiences, such as exposure to sport psychology, may prove helpful in advancing our understanding of coaching efficacy. Thus, the purpose of this study was to explore male high school coaches' coaching experience to determine whether sport psychology education and interactions with sport psychology consultants relate to coaches' coaching efficacy. Participants, 585 males (Mage = 43.89 + 10.02), completed an online survey measuring coaching efficacy and coaching and sport psychology experience. A hierarchical regression analysis revealed that after controlling for years of coaching experience and school size, sport psychology education and interactions with sport psychology consultants were associated with higher overall coaching efficacy scores (p < .001). Additionally, analysis of covariance revealed that those with extensive sport psychology education had statistically higher coaching efficacy scores than those reporting no sport psychology education (p < .05). Knowledge of these phenomena may be relevant for sport psychology consultants, coach educators, and researchers.
