Role of timeouts in table tennis examinedKarlsson, Michaela, Sandéhn, Alexandra January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of the present study was to examine the role of timeouts in competitive elite table tennis in relation to psychological momentum (PM). To that end, archival data from elite top-international matches (N= 48) was firstly examined to gather information on when timeouts are most taken, and whether these have any objective influence on subsequent performance (set outcome and ultimately match outcome). Secondly, similar archival data for Swedish League matches (N= 36) was examined and interviews with elite coaches from the highest Swedish league (N= 6) at these given matches were carried out to gain further knowledge and understanding on the role and use of timeouts in competitive elite table tennis. Findings showed that timeouts were mostly called following a sequence of three consecutive lost points; that is, coaches used timeouts to break negative PM. However, findings also showed that these given timeouts had no objective impact on neither set nor match outcomes; that is, sets and matches were ultimately lost. Future research examining the subjective coach-player experience revolving around timeouts is needed to comprehend potential ‘secondary’ purposes when calling timeouts and, subsequently, understand timeouts role in table tennis fully.

Game based pedagogies and the volunteer coaching community : (re)imagining coach learning and knowledge through a collaborative approachWilliams, Shaun January 2017 (has links)
Collaborative action was undertaken in response to the continued criticisms of formal coach education. It is strongly felt that we can no longer merely criticise what is not happening in terms of coach learning, but a key requirement now is to demonstrate other options. In the UK up to 80% of coaches are volunteers who reach out to around eight million people involved in sport. This valuable workforce is largely forgotten and the bureaucratic structures which oversee formal coach education are merely concerned with quotas and income generation. A fundamental problem with formal coach education is the way in which learning is decontextualized and a knowledge deficit remains. Coaching is multifarious and complex and we need to consider better ways in terms of how we prepare people for this. The Coach Learning and Development (CLAD) programme was devised and implemented in October 2013 to May 2014 at a community rugby club in Wiltshire. Over this 8 month period a range of strategies for coach learning were integrated into CLAD to evidence methods which benefitted the transition of knowledge(s). The theoretical endeavours of Basil Bernstein are introduced to SCR for the first time, particularly the ‘pedagogical device’ to understand, theorise and develop insight into the type of educational contexts that can better support the learning of volunteer coaches. Findings suggest that CLAD as collaborative action learning was successful in transforming coaches to engage with more positive and contemporary forms of coaching pedagogy. Namely ‘game based pedagogies’ argued to be theoretically underpinned by the ‘constraints based approach’. Empirical insights are given in the hope that this can spur further methodological enquiries that move beyond the mere criticism of coach education. SCR needs research endeavours that shift beyond the ‘bricolage’ where knowledge is transferred into the real world to influence real change. Therefore, the findings also draw on the pivotal features of CLAD to not only support more value laden research commitments, but to inform policy developments and practice that can re-configure more successful outcomes for coach education and coaches.

A qualitative study of the relationships between the knowledge and behaviour of coaches in two football academies in MalaysiaKassim, Mohar January 2008 (has links)
The formation of the Football Academy in Malaysia was seen as the best possible way to develop young footballers, through a decentralized programme with the aim to provide a strong base for many players who are sound and strong and to produce an individual player who can reach world class standard. With the problem of performance of the Malaysia national football team, which has been considerably affected by problems relating to the knowledge of coaching and behaviour of the football coaches in the coaching process, the study of the academy football coaches in Malaysia was conducted to offer some possible ways to address the issues facing the coaching profession in Malaysia. It is significant to study the academy coaches since the football academies are expected to play a prominent role in producing quality players for the states, national and international teams. The study applied a qualitative methodology to explore the unique features and circumstances surrounding the football academy coaches and players in the context of this study and the major sources of data include the interview, observation and documentation analysis. Subsequently, the findings of this study revealed that i) the development of knowledge of coaching has taken place in the academy but constrained by factors involving the coach education programme at the academy level; ii) the weaknesses of the coaches in transferring important knowledge to the players showed a significant impact on the players' performance; iii) the coaches' behaviour that were seen in organizing the players and training them for competition has impacted on the players' performance; iv) the important relationship between coaches' knowledge and behaviour that play a significant role in the development of the players; and v) other factors which have impact on the coaches' behaviour during the coaching process.

A iniciação competitiva precoce e a formação do técnico desportivo de judô : um estudo de caso dos resultados dos campeonatos paulistas de 1999 até 2011 /Cavazani, Reinaldo Naia. January 2012 (has links)
Orientador: Alexandre Janotta Drigo / Banca: Dagmar Ap. Still, it is common for former athletes, established champions, and people knowledgeable in the modality, to function as provisioned coaches, even without an academic title. Considering that judo is a bodily practice that became a sport through its western dissemination, and in which a sportive influence can be identified in the essence of its practitioners/coaches' practice, the objective of this study was to investigate the relation of the early competitive initiation with the professional education of the judo coach, with the following specific objectives: 1) the representativeness of the sport competition with the values specific to the modality; 2) the relation between early competitive initiation and the longevity or abandonment of the modality; 3) the relation of the competitive results with the education or prestige of the judo coach. The study had a qualitative methodological approach through the use of a case study, with the documental source being obtained in the Federação Paulisa de Judô (Judo Federation of São Paulo) website, and restricted to athletes who initially obtained medals in the Campeonato Paulista de Judô (Judo Championship of São Paulo) in the juvenile class (09 and 10 years of age) in the years of 1999, 2000 and 2001, and whose results were analyzed up to 2011. The qualitative data was collected through questionnaires. The quantitative results indicated that 65% of the sample from 103 athletes interrupted their participation with competitive results (medals won) in the Campeonato Paulista at mere 12 years of age, suggesting that winning medals during childhood didn't guarantee the continuity of the...
