Van Niekerk, Karen 06 1900 (has links)
Guilt is an emotion which all people experience at times through the course of their lives. There are however, those who experience guilt all the time and struggle with the effects of it, for example depression, anxiety, anger, etcetera. The symptoms of guilt demonstrate destruction and influence the complete functioning of a person - body, emotions, mind, and spirit. The current psychotherapeutic interventions focus on the treatment of the symptoms of guilt. Symptom treatment brings only tempor ry relief, which is usually followed by new symptoms developing or relapses. Apart from the focus on the symptoms of guilt, it is also important that the therapist should understand why one person is more vulnerable than another person to develop guilt, and why is guilt preserved. Accordingly treatment can be shifted from symptom treatment to solving the problems of the cause and maintenance of guilt. Research on guilt focuses primarily on the effect of guilt on personality development (pathology among others). Less research has been done on the cause of guilt - especially subconscious guilt. The overall aim of this study is to uncover the dynamic course of subconscious guilt retroperspectively. A literature study on guilt serves as introduction to the case study. The research is done by means of a case study to uncover the subconscious perceptions and thoughts of the respondent, which will be described, interpreted and explained. The research will establish recommendations for Educational Psychologists, psychologists in other categories, parents and teachers to understand the cause and subconscious dynamic course of guilt. That will enable them to interpret the overt behaviour in the context of the complete psychodynamics. Literature on the practical course of therapy and the train of thoughts of the therapist is in short supply. This research seeks to contribute to filling this gap when the complete therapeutic interaction between the therapist and the client is put down in writing. / Psychology of Education / D. Ed. We consider nutritional processes as psychobiosocial processes of meaning and interpretation which occur in various systematically correlate dimensions, including the correlations between micro and macro cellular dimensions as well as those between men and not only the planet where they live but all the cosmos. Supported in the semiotic theory of Peirce, we prepared a diagram (originally a triad of related elements that form a sign) and from some unfolding of the diagram we covered some correlations between bodily cognitive processes, and the acquisition and change in nutritional habits. We believe that there is an Instinctive Mind that operates in the formation of metabolic habits that are expressed in terms of a nutritional instinct acquired and modified over time in the living experiences of our species. We claim that from a habit break, experienced as corporal displeasure, such as hunger, the body consciousness considered under the Peircean theoretical perspective, is unleashed in different degrees of self-control requirement. Considering the hypothesis that the bodily knowledge is produced through an immediate consciousness, that is, through an instinctive consciousness does not requiring the mediation of a conscious rationality or an individual subjectivity in order to cognitive processes happen, we investigate some correlations between nutritional processes and the production of an affective bodily knowledge

White matter changes and cognitive impairment. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2011 (has links)
(Abstract shortened by UMI.) / The conclusion of the studies reported herein can be summarized as follows: (1) PI in TCD correlates well with WMC volume and helps to differentiate those with and without WMC in stroke patients. (2) Post-stroke cognitive complaints are not related to severity of WMC among lacunar stroke patients. (3) The ARWMC scale correlates with objective cognitive performances and the operational definitions of ARWMC scale improves inter-rater reliability on CT. (4) Cognitive impairment in patients with confluent WMC is mediated by global and frontal cortical atrophy. Predictors for cognitive progression are cortical atrophy, absence of hyperlipidemia, low BP, and low cognitive scores. / With an aging population, prevalence of dementia is expected to escalate in the coming decades. The burden is especially great in developing countries like China. Similar to Alzheimer's pathology (e.g. amyloid plaque), age-related white matter changes (WMC) are important substrates of dementia. Since WMC are considered to be of ischemic origin, dementia related to WMC is believed to be more preventable than Alzheimer's disease. Yet, studies focusing on WMC have been relatively few. The thesis will cover 4 aspects of WMC and cognitive impairment. / Xiong, Yunyun. / Adviser: Vincent Mok. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 73-06, Section: B, page: . / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2011. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 198-244). / Electronic reproduction.
