Crescimento de grão num fio de ferro comercialmente puro trefilado a frio / Grain growth in commercially-pure cold-drawn wires of iron

Davison Ramos de Almeida Junior 29 April 2015 (has links)
This Dissertation aims follow the microstructural changes occurring during isothermal annealing of commercially-pure cold-drawn iron wire, with emphasys on grain growth phenomena. The grain size data were obtained by means of the linear intercept method. The orientations scanning were done by means of electron backscatter diffraction patterns (EBSD). Isothermal annealing was performed within the temperature range 823 - 1173 K for several times. The material displays full recrystallization at temperatures above 873 K. Normal grain growth was observed above 1023 K, although this growth did not evolve through longer annealing times. The results of the linear intercept method show the grain size distribution has a log-normal shape. For samples annealed above 1123 K, abnormal grain growth occurs. The first signs of secondary recrystallization appear close to the center of the wire, growing towards the surface. Changes in the wire diameter and annealing atmosphere were performed to assess the effect of these variables on abnormal grain growth. Results point out that abnormal grain growth is driven by solid-state wetting. These morphological observations were also confirmed by micro and mesotexture analyses. The microtexture also shows the presence of two major fiber texture components || WD and || WD, were WD is the axial wire-drawn direction. The first one is the most intense and its strengthening seems to be related with abnormal grain growth. The second one is weaker and it seems to be most related with small primary recrystallized grains. Theoretical and analytical features about grain growth are presented and discussed in light of literature and experimental results.

Optimisation de la transformation à froid des tubes de gaine en acier austénitique 15-15TI AIM1 / Optimization of the cold processing of 15-15Ti austenitic steel cladding tubes

Courtin, Laurine 15 October 2015 (has links)
- une analyse des gammes de fabrication mises en oeuvre par le passé ainsi qu’une étude des conditions d’étirage à froid et des traitements thermiques appliqués ;
- une évaluation de nouveaux procédés de mise en forme tels que le laminage à pas de pèlerin et le martelage visant à valider la fabrication des tubes finis selon les spécifications requises ;
In order to face the next century energy demand growth, the worldwide development of the 4th generation of nuclear reactors is considered. The construction of a sodium-cooled fast reactor prototype (ASTRID) is currently envisaged at the CEA. The reference material selected for the fuel cladding of its first core is the 15-15Ti-AIM1 austenitic steel (Austenitic Improved Material).
The goal of this PhD thesis work is to investigate the different ways of optimization for the coldworking steps undergone by the claddings during their manufacture in order to improve their swelling resistance. The main investigations are focused on the conditions of the cold-working steps and the thermal treatments applied throughout the shaping of the claddings, especially of the last solution annealing treatment. The effects of these parameters on the microstructure are investigated (structural refinement, precipitation and the additive elements dissolution and arrangement of the dislocations).
This study is divided into three main steps:
- an analysis of the fabrication routes applied in the past along with the study of the “coldwork” and the thermal treatments conditions;
- an assessment of new shaping processes, such as the “cold-pilgering” and the hammering, in order to verify the conformity of the manufactured tubes with respect to the required specifications.
- an attempt of optimization of the cold-work routes and the microstructure of the final material. The results of microstructure characterization and the mechanical behavior allow envisaging favorably the use of an alternative process such as the cold pilgering to manufacture claddings.

Multimaterial Fibers And Tapers A Platform For Nonlinear Photonics And Nanotechnology

Shabahang, Soroush 01 January 2014 (has links)
The development of optical sources and components suitable for the mid-infrared is crucial for applications in this spectral range to reach the maturity level of their counterparts in the visible and near-infrared spectral regimes. The recent commercialization of quantum cascade lasers is leading to further interest in this spectral range. Wideband mid-infrared coherent sources, such as supercontinuum generation, have yet to be fully developed. A mid-infrared supercontinuum source would allow for unique applications in spectroscopy and sensing. Over the last decade, it has been shown that high-index confinement in highly nonlinear fibers pumped with high-peak-power pulses is an excellent approach to supercontinuum generation in the visible and near-infrared. Nonlinear waveguides such as fibers offer an obvious advantage in increasing the nonlinear interaction length maintained with a small cross section. In addition, fiber systems do not require optical alignment and are mechanically stable and robust with respect to the environmental changes. These properties have made fiber systems unique in applications where they are implemented in a harsh and unstable environment. In extending this approach into the mid-infrared, I have used chalcogenide glass fibers. Chalcogenide glasses have several attractive features for this application: they have high refractive indices for high optical-confinement, have a wide transparency window in the mid-infrared, and have a few orders-of-magnitude higher nonlinearity than silica glass and other mid-IR glasses. Producing chalcogenide glass fiber tapers offer, furthermore, the possibility of dispersion control and stronger field confinement and hence higher nonlinearity, desired for supercontinuum generation.

Understanding mechanical size effects in metallic microwires : synergy between experiment and simulation / Comprendre les effets de tailles mécaniques dans les microfils métalliques : synergie entre expérience et simulation

Purushottam Raj Purohit, Ravi Raj Purohit 19 October 2018 (has links)
Polycrystalline metallic microwires produced by cold-drawing exhibit significant mechanical strength that make them ideal candidates for reinforcement of composites. Previous studies on polycrystalline pure nickel wires have indicated a significant size dependence of their yield and tensile strength as well as their ductility. The aim of this study is to understand these size effects by in-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis and crystal plasticity finite element (CPFE) simulations. In-situ monotonous and cyclic tensile tests under synchrotron radiation were carried on microwires with diameters ranging from 100 to 40 µm. The commercially obtained 100µm as-drawn wires exhibit a core-shell architecture with <111> fiber texture dominant in core and heterogeneous dual fiber texture <111> and <100> in the shell. Reduction of specimen size by electropolishing leads to wires having a homogeneous microstructure, whereas reduction of specimen size by further cold drawing leads to wires with a sharper texture while retaining the core-shell architecture.The yield and tensile strength of the electropolished wires increase with decreasing diameter, whereas the ductility decrease with decreasing diameter. In the case of cold-drawn wires, the yield and tensile strength, and also the ductility was observed to increase with decreasing diameter. The XRD analysis indicates successive yielding of grain families under iso-strain condition. The gradient in the texture of the microwire was seen to activate deformation mechanisms which are not seen for microwires with homogeneous texture. To understand the influence of different microstructural parameters, and notably the influence of crystallographic texture, 3D representative microstructure was generated and CPFE simulations were carried out. The simulated average behavior of different grain families (<111>, <100>) agrees well with the experimental results. The CPFE simulations indicate heterogeneity in stress field across the microstructure in the presence of a gradient in crystallographic texture.We show that the microstructure engineering of micro-texture components (single- or dual-texture) and their spatial spread (homogenous or architectured) can be used as design guidelines for obtaining optimal microstructure in accordance with desired set of mechanical properties.
