[en] THE DIFFICULTIES OF STAYING IN UNIVERSITIES: A YOUTH EXPERIENCE THE STUDENT SUPPORT PROGRAM ASSISTANCE ASSOCIATION FOR ADOLESCENTS / [pt] AS DIFICULDADES DE PERMANÊNCIA NAS UNIVERSIDADES: UMA EXPERIÊNCIA DOS JOVENS DO PROGRAMA DE APOIO ESTUDANTIL DA ASSOCIAÇÃO DE ASSISTÊNCIA AO ADOLESCENTE

PATRICIA MACIEL PEREIRA 22 November 2016 (has links)
[en] This study discusses the Brazilian higher education and the democratization of access and retention of students in universities. In our country, the continuity of higher level studies is still extremely difficult for much of the population, as they experience the whole time the social inequalities in our society, as pointed out by this study. Since then, we propose to study the policies of affirmative actions, specifically the booking system of university places, discussing the need for equal opportunities in terms of access to higher education. Also studies the student assistance policy, with the objectives of the National Student Assistance Plan (PNAES) and its importance for the maintenance of students in their universities, highlighting the young people who access places through reservation system in public educational institutions and through the University for All Program in private or communitary educational institutions. Emphasizing the difficulty of staying faced by students bereft of financial resources and groups historically living in social inequality conditions in completing their courses in universities where they are inserted, this paper brings the experience of university students served by the Adolescent Care Association, presenting the difficulties and possibilities experienced in his college career. The study highlights the problems faced in universities by students from the popular classes and demonstrates the need for expansion and visibility of student assistance policies so that in fact the students living in social inequality conditions may have their stay requirements catered and therefore, conclude satisfactorily their courses.

A Multiplicity of Successes: Capabilities, Refuge, and Pathways in Contemporary Community Colleges

January 2015 (has links)
abstract: Community colleges, like all higher education institutions in the United States, have not been immune to the increased national focus on educational accountability and institutional effectiveness over the past three decades. Federal and non-governmental initiatives aimed at tracking and reporting on institutional outcomes have focused on utilitarian academic and economic measures of student success that homogenize the goals, aspirations, and challenges of the individuals who attend these unique open-access institutions. This dissertation, which is comprised of three submission-ready scholarly peer-reviewed articles, examined community college students’ conceptualizations and valuations of “student success.” The research project was designed as a multiple methods single-site case study, and the data sources consisted of a large-scale student e-survey, follow-up semi-structured interviews with a heterogeneous group of students, semi-structured interviews with faculty and administrators, and a review of institutional documents. The interviews also incorporated two experimental visual elicitation techniques and a participatory ranking exercise. Article One introduces and operationalizes the author’s primary conceptual perspective, the capabilities approach, to develop a more comprehensive framework for understanding and evaluating community college student outcomes. This article documents the methodological process used to generate a theoretical and an empirical list of community college capabilities, which serve as the basis of future capabilities-based research on community college student success. Article Two draws on the student interview and student visual elicitation data to explore the capability category of “refuge” – a new, unexpected, and student-valued purpose of the community college as a safe escape from the complexities and demands of personal, home, and work life. In light of recent efforts to promote more structured and prescriptive college experiences to improve graduation rates, Article Three explores students’ perceptions of their pathways through the community college using the participant-generated and researcher-generated visual elicitation data. Findings indicate that students value the structure and the flexibility community colleges offer, as well as their own ability to be agents and architects of their educational experience. Taken together, these articles suggest that student success is less linear and more rhizomatic in structure than it is currently portrayed in the literature. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Educational Leadership and Policy Studies 2015

Pop Culture and Course Content: Redefining Genre Value in First-Year Composition

January 2017 (has links)
abstract: Despite its rich history in the English classroom, popular culture still does not have a strong foothold in first-year composition (FYC). Some stakeholders view popular culture as a “low-brow” topic of study (Bradbury, 2011), while others believe popular culture distracts students from learning about composition (Adler-Kassner, 2012). However, many instructors argue that popular culture can cultivate student interest in writing and be used to teach core concepts in composition (Alexander, 2009; Friedman, 2013; Williams, 2014). This dissertation focuses on students’ perceptions of valuable writing—particularly with regards to popular culture—and contributes to conversations about what constitutes “valuable” course content. The dissertation study, which was conducted in two sections of an FYC course during the Spring 2016 semester, uses three genre domains as a foundation: academic genres, workplace genres, and pop-culture genres. The first part of the study gauges students’ prior genre knowledge and their beliefs about the value of academic, workplace, and pop-culture genres through pre- and post-surveys. The second part of the study includes analysis of students’ remix projects to determine if and how students can meet FYC learning outcomes by working within each domain. Through this study, as well as through frameworks in culturally sustaining pedagogy, writing studies, and genre studies, this dissertation aims to assist in the reconciliation of opposing views surrounding the content of FYC while filling in research gaps on the knowledge, interests, and perceptions of value students bring into the writing classroom. Ultimately, this dissertation explores how pop-culture composition can facilitate student learning just as well as academic and workplace composition, thereby challenging course content that has traditionally been privileged in FYC. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation English 2017

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivoitotal.pdf: 1891278 bytes, checksum: 083ff2b9858783344cb14e40da41d404 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-02-22 / This paper deals with the theme Inclusion Policies in Higher Education aimed at the inclusion of students with disabilities in the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and intends to analyze the contributions of policies for access and stay in higher courses of the Center for Communication and Tourism and Arts (CCTA). In order to reach the specific objectives, we have discussed about the paradigm of inclusion and its relation in the educational context, about the demands for policies included in the world context and we have described the phases that influenced the process of recognition and schooling of people with disabilities, until the entry into higher education. Besides, we have presented a debate about the inclusion of people with disabilities in higher education, in the context of the publications of the Brazilian Journal of Special Education (RBEE) and studies of the Postgraduate Program in Education (PPGE / UFPB), from 2012 to 2016. We have related the national policies of inclusion of higher education with the policies developed by the UFPB, especially those directed to people with disabilities. Finally, we have identified who are and what the students have said about the students with disabilities enrolled in CCTA higher education courses on the inclusion process. Regarding the methodology, it was used the qualitative approach, a descriptive, documental and bibliographical research, with semi-structured interviews. We have applied four research tools, using data analysis guidelines (BARDIN, 2006) for the analysis of data, in order to identify subjects' comprehension about inclusion and accessibility, as well as inclusive policies and strategies used in the institution that can promote the access and the permanence of the students with disabilities in the superior courses of the CCTA. The subjects of the research were students with disabilities enrolled in higher courses of the CCTA - main protagonists -, the coordinator of the Committee for Inclusion of Accessibility (CIA) - special counsel responsible for the Institutional Policy for Inclusion and Accessibility - supporting students linked to the Support Program The Student with Disabilities (PAED / CIA), the CCTA's servers and the coordinator of the institutional policy of inclusion and accessibility. Based on the analysis of the data, especially the information from the interviews with the subjects, we have infered that the inclusive policies of higher education have contributed to the access and permanence of people with disabilities in the CCTA / UFPB, notably through the access / by the Include Program and the PNAES, under the responsibility of the CIA. However, also according to data collection, we have seen that the process of inclusion of students with disabilities in the institution needs to overcome many challenges, especially regarding the lack of server training to enable attitudinal and pedagogical strategies; the limitations in the communication and information systems, especially in the deficiency of the physical / architectural structure, which is eminently institutional. Thus, it is the responsibility of the institution – made up of different managers, sectors, people and professionals – to consider the demands and propositions highlighted by the research subjects and to assume the ethical and political commitment to respond to the demands of diversity presented in this scope, restructuring and revising their inclusive policies.

Manaut, Nayane Rocha January 2017 (has links)
In this research, it was investigated the tendency of the academic history of students taking the Pedagogy course offered by Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul referring to graduation, evasion, retention and mobility. The sample consisted of 612 entrant students of the referred course forming 10 admission coortes during 2004/1 to 2008/2. It was adopted the Diagnosis of Students Flow as methodological guidance. To theoretically uphold this study, the history of College Education, the main conceptions about University and laws and procedures that enclose this level of education were used, going through an analysis of the teacher training in Brazil, considering, specifically, the Course of Pedagogy. Finally, it is addressed, theoretically to the main variables that comprise this study and the evolution of the tracked studies that gave birth to the Diagnosis of Students Flow method. From the analysis carried out in this study, it was possible to conclude that the Course of Pedagogy at UFRGS does not have a marked tendency regarding academic pathways of their students, especially in the matters of graduation and evasion. With respect to the student background, it was possible to identify facts that point a potential risk of evasion in this course. The questions raised by these findings were especially linked to the academic management of these graduation courses and point out a necessity of carrying out a systematic monitoring of the academic and student history of graduation students.

Lesson Study, a Means for Fostering Collaborative Reflection: Effects on the Self-Efficacy and Teaching Practices of Developmental Education College Success Course Instructors

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT Counselors at a public community college who teach a first-year college success course to developmental education students do not have effective opportunities or a systematic method to develop their teaching practice. Moreover, like a majority of community college and university instructors, many counselors do not have formal training in instruction. Since the retention and persistence rates of developmental education students are low when compared to non-developmental education students, and the purpose of the college success course is to increase developmental education student success, it is imperative that instructors of the college success course are well-trained to provide high quality learning experiences. The researcher implemented the Lesson Study (LS) professional learning experience in order to increase the collaboration amongst counselors in their efforts to improve their teaching practice as well as improve the quality of the learning experience for developmental education students, consequently potentially improving their retention and persistence. The researcher facilitated a mixed-method study to explore how instructors made meaning of their teaching practice as well as what changes they made to their instructional practice while engaging in LS. The researcher utilized qualitative means to analyze the following data: (1) instructors' weekly reflective journals, (2) semi-structured interviews with instructors after each cycle of LS, (3) video recordings of LS debrief meetings, and (4) video recordings of LS planning meetings. The researcher utilized quantitative means to analyze the following data: (1) pre/post instructor surveys on self-efficacy, and (2) 1,235 student questionnaires regarding LS lessons and non-LS lessons. Analysis of the qualitative data demonstrated that how counselors made meaning of their LS experience seemed to correlate with positive features attributed to the practice of LS in the research literature such as increased collaboration and in-depth reflection as well as positive changes in instructional practices and an increased focus on learning from practice. In addition, analysis of the qualitative and quantitative data showed that lessons created through LS produced a higher quality learning experience for students than lessons that were not created through LS. Moreover, the analysis of the data showed an increase in instructors' efficacy for teaching. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ed.D. Leadership and Innovation 2014

Community College Readers in Their 21st Century Transactional Zones

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT This mixed methods study examines 126 community college students enrolled in developmental reading courses at a mid-sized Southwestern community college. These students participated in a survey-based study regarding their reading experiences and practices, social influence upon those practices, reading sponsorship, and reading self-efficacy. The survey featured 33 structured response prompts and six free response prompts, allowing for both quantitative and qualitative analysis. The study¡&brkbar;s results reflected the diverse reading interests and practices of developmental college students, revealing four main themes: -the diversity and complexity of their reading practices; -the diversity in reading genre preferences; -the strong influence of family members and teachers as reading sponsors in the past with that influence shifting to friends and college professors in the present; and, -the possible connection between self-efficacy and social engagement with reading. Findings from this study suggest these college students, often depicted as underprepared or developmental readers, are engaging in diverse and sophisticated reading practices and perceive reading as a means to achieve their success-oriented goals and to learn about the real world. This study adds to the limited field of community college literacy research, provides a more nuanced view of what it means to be an underprepared college reader, and points to ways community college educators can better support their students by acknowledging and building upon their socio-culturally influenced literacy practices. At the same time, educators can advantage students academically in terms of building their cultural capital with overt inculcation into disciplinary literacies and related repertoires of practice. The research developed is of the qualitative, bibliographic and documentary type. The theoretical support for the analysis of the institutional evaluation is based on Afonso (2000, 2010, 2013), Lehfeld et al. (2010) and Sobrinho (2002, 2003a, 2003b, 2008a, 2008b, 2010). The study of distance education is based on Lima (2013, 2014a, 2014b), Moore and Kearsley (2010), and Peters (2004). The data collection and its analysis was used in the triangular methodology, in the scope of bibliographical, documentary and field research, theorization and interviews carried out to the managers of the university linked to the evaluation, to the Dean and also to different members of the Institutional Evaluation Committee (Cavi): an administrative technician, a student representative and a representative of civil society, totaling 9 respondents. In the meantime, we try to understand in which the place of distance education in the institutional self-assessment of the Federal University of Goiás stands? Throughout its development, the study deals with distance education, its evolution from the use of radio to the advent of the Internet, its aspects in Brazilian legislation and its trajectory in the Federal University of Goiás. Institutional assessment, its conceptions, history in Brazil, current legislation, and, finally, self-assessment and the role of the Self Assessment Commission (CPA). Finally, the self-assessment of the Federal University of Goiás, along with its Cavi/CPA are studied in the aspect of distance education, seeking to understand its trajectory, mechanisms and processes. The result obtained was that distance education is not completely institutionalized in the context of the university, so that the realized self-assessment does not contemplate it in an integral and formative way, also hindering the process of diagnosis and improvement of the modality in the institution of higher education. A pesquisa desenvolvida é do tipo qualitativa, bibliográfica e documental.

It is a bibliographical research, whose theme is the teaching labor in college education inserted in the contemporary socio-political context, understood as a reflection of multiple determinations and contradictions, produced in function of the capitalist mode of production. The central thesis is linked to the understanding that the contradiction established between socially necessary work and capitalist labor has affected the ontology of the teacher and deprived the teaching labor in college education of its sense of praxis. The proposed research problem involves the reflection and understanding of the transformations of teaching labor in college education and its impacts on the ontology of being a teacher. The research is based on the dialectical historical materialism method, assuming its precepts and the way it helps to understand the teaching labor in college education (object of study) in its relation with historicity and with totality. The research approach is qualitative, and the general goal was to analyze and understand theoretically the teaching labor in college education, inserted in the contemporary socio-political conjuncture, and its implications in the formation, professionalization, emancipation and ontology of the teacher. The specific goals contributed to organize the route of the research and exposition of the four chapters that compose it, with the purpose of analyzing and understanding: a) the constitution of the social subject, facing the capitalist way of being; b) the capitalist restructuring and the inversion of the relationship between education and labor, for labor (alienated) and education - economic and educational restructuring to meet market demands; c) and changes in labor and social function of college education teachers - the regulatory processes and their impacts on the subtraction of human essentiality from teaching, expropriation, deformation, decharacterization, debasement, precariousness of the social being teacher and capture of his subjectivity. The investigation relies on the analysis and interpretation of the discursive meanings of academic productions, that deal with teaching labor in college education, including a set of researches produced between the years 2010 and 2016. The analysis was carried out considering the specificity of three categories, but also the dialectical relation between them: the epistemological regulations; ideological regulations; and political regulations in the formation, professionalization and teaching labor. Through the analysis it was possible to understand that there has been a deepening of the forms of control over teacher training and professionalism in the last three decades, which is directly articulated to the restructuring of the capitalist mode of production, emphasizing the appropriation of college education teaching by capital (real subsumption), and recognizing the economic relevance of its productive and immaterial condition for the propagation of bourgeois ideals. The historical investigation and the contributions of the discursive senses have also helped to reveal the need to promote studies that recognize the ontological condition of the social being teacher, his capacity to intervene intentionally (conscious) in the world, precisely to produce ruptures that value praxis as an element constituent of man, reality and teaching in college education.

Simone Aparecida Tiziotto 20 April 2018 (has links)
Immersed in the complex and challenging context of the Age of Knowledge, turning our attention to the learning contexts of higher engineering courses, we observe the need to propose formative evaluative models, contextualized and that support a process of continuous, active, autonomous and sustainable learning. The aim of this work is therefore to propose and test a formative model for evaluating the learning of meta-competences, applicable to engineering courses, in contexts that use active learning methodologies. Understanding meta-competencies as a synergistic meeting of competencies that can lead the individual to achieve and demonstrate extraordinary results. To do so, we performed a bibliographical and documentary research that resulted in a first version of the model, followed by a quantitative research of the survey type with a sample population of 330 participants, in which through PCA and Cronbach\'s Alpha we optimized the model and the we measure acceptable levels of reliability and validity; In addition, still in search of a qualitative validation, we conducted a semistructured interview with university professors with well-known recognition. Once completed, the model was tested in a sample group of 31 students representing a sample of the target audience for which the model was proposed, confirming its applicability and appropriateness. The results are formed by a learning evaluation model applicable to higher engineering courses composed of 12 meta-competences and 44 competences associated to it, propositions of applications within three evaluative categories and initialed according to the context in which it is inserted. The MAAM presents itself as a useful, relevant model capable of contributing to a sustainable learning that is relevant to the contemporary context.
