Integrating 3D and 2D computer generated imagery for the comics medium

DeLuna, Ruben 17 February 2005 (has links)
Advances in 3D computer technology have led to aesthetic experimentation within the comics medium. Comic creators have produced comic books done entirely with 3D models that are then assembled digitally for the printed page. However, in using these 3D objects in a comic format, the creators have developed art styles that do not adhere to the paradigms established by this traditionally 2D medium. More successful results can be achieved by integrating 3D computer generated imagery with traditional 2D imagery, rather than replacing it. This thesis develops a method of combining rendered 3D models with 2D vector graphics to create a comic book art style that is consistent with the traditional medium, while still taking advantage of the new technology.

English in the Margins: Cajun Literacy Communities in Bec Doux et ses amis

Jakobeit, Samantha 16 December 2015 (has links)
In this thesis, I will explore the dual language Cajun-French and English comic strip, Bec Doux et ses amis, in terms of its value within the literacy communities of southwest Louisiana. I will claim that the text subverts the established power dynamics which existed between the American English speakers, the unreconstructed Cajuns, and the bilingual Cajun French and English speaking communities through the use of text placement and trickster figures.

Watchmen: Comics and Literature Collide

Machado, Christina 10 November 2011 (has links)
This thesis will explore Watchmen as an event in postmodern art and literature. When a postmodern event occurs, no language game exists at that moment to make the event comprehensible. Limitations therefore of incommensurable language games are exposed and scholars are left without language, scrabbling to decipher what happened. This is the case with Watchmen. Comics and literature collided and there is no language to discuss what has come out of that collision. Through chapter analysis, character study, and inquiry into the postmodern mood this project will demonstrate Watchmen as a turning point in the discussion of comics and literature.

"Symboler i en ordlös serienovell. Eric Drookers "Home" utifrån ett semiotiskt perspektiv

Lövgren, Stella January 2019 (has links)
The essay investigates the wordless graphic short story Home by Eric Drooker, a comic on 42 pages where Drooker uses specific visual means to communicate. The purpose of the thesis is to investigate how a narrative can be formulated with imagery where different symbols are included. The use and frequency of symbols are documented by a content analysis and a semiotic perspective. The result shows that the symbols Drooker uses are gestures, word pictures, numbers, punctuation marks, notes, emanata, graphic as well as iconic symbols, panels, frames and page layout. The report is aimed at researchers, students and professionals, and at those who are interested in comics, graphic design, layout and visual language.

Pistons, pins-ups & fisticuff - a graphic narrative exploration of architectural design

Wolf, Lewis 07 December 2012 (has links)
The project is an investigation of the development of architectural space through drawing. The aim is to arrive at a design through the use of a graphic novel. The building has three programmes that augment the current conditions of the context. A motorcycle workshop and showroom; a boxing academy, and short term accommodation [apartments]. If fiction is really an invented reality, then protagonists are interpretations of projected contexts. The use of a comic offers a subjective perspective of design, as well as the ability to explore spaces where architecture is a backdrop. This is similar to the use of architecture in film. Parallel to the progression of the storyline, the process of illustrating the scenes forms the platform for the development of the architectural design. / Dissertation MArch(Prof)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Architecture / MArch(Prof) / Unrestricted
