Investigation of Internal Communication Flows : A case study of Hallpressen AB

Neniskis, Mantautas, Kiritschenko, Leonid January 2016 (has links)
The introduction of the Internet and computers into the work environment have changed the news industry. New models of revenues for spreading the news, and the reachability and accessibility of the news has grown tremendously. These implications have influenced the way media company’s employees have to work, from multi-skilling to communicating with each other efficiently. This research seeks to investigate the current state of the internal communication flow in a Swedish media company called Hallpressen AB and to find opportunities for improving the internal communication flow inside the company. In order to fully understand the existing situation in the company, the authors observed nine of the company’s departments, held 14 interviews with managers and executive committee members, and conducted two focus groups. Based on the data collection, the authors created a communication channel model of the existing communication inside the media company, and performed a qualitative content analysis to summarize the findings from the observations and interviews. The focus groups were performed in order to examine an existing communication tool called “Slack”, and to understand the general perception that the company’s employees held of it. From the findings, the authors suggested possible improvements for the company’s internal communication flows. First, what could be improved in the management of communication inside the company, such as opening of a communication department or hiring an internal communicator. Second, what could be improved in already existing communication channels, such as creation of special part on the intranet for every department and etc.

Using Ballistocardiography to Perform Key Distribution in Wearable IoT Networks

Witt, Alexander W 20 May 2017 (has links)
A WIoT is a wireless network of low-power sensing nodes placed on the human body. While operating, these networks routinely collect physiological signals to send to offsite medical professionals for review. In this manner, these networks support a concept known as pervasive healthcare in which patients can be continuously monitored and treated remotely. Given that these networks are used to guide medical treatment and depend on transmitting sensitive data, it is important to ensure that the communication channel remains secure. Symmetric pairwise cryptography is a traditional scheme that can be used to provide such security. The scheme functions by sharing a cryptographic key between a pair of sensors. Once shared, the key can then be used by both parties to encrypt and decrypt all future messages. To configure a WIoT to support the use of symmetric pairwise cryptography a key distribution protocol is required. Schemes for pre-deployment are often used to perform this distribution. These schemes usually require inserting key information into WIoT devices before they can be used in the network. Unfortunately, this need to manually configure WIoT devices can decrease their usability. In this thesis we propose and evaluate an alternative approach to key distribution that uses physiological signals derived from accelerometer and gyroscope sensors. The evaluation of our approach indicates that more study is required to determine techniques that will enable ballistocardiography-derived physiological signals to provide secure key distribution.

Brytningstid i Internkommunikationen? : vilken roll har Intranät och e-post i organisationers kommunikation? / The Impact of IT on Internal Communication

Cederlund, Maria, Häggström, Anna-Karin January 2000 (has links)

Having a functioning internal communication is necessary for the survival and existence of every company. Traditional communication channels are for example meetings, noteboards and personnel newspapers. During the last ten years we have witnessed an explosion of new channels, who are based on information technology. IT is a natural part in new IT-companies, like Framfab and Icon Medialab, but what role does IT have in a large, manufacturing company with a long history? The purpose with this thesis is to investigate how IT has influenced the internal communication in a company. With this thesis we want to contribute to a developed understanding of communication within companies and discuss what role IT can play for internal communication in the future. We have chosen to study Akzo Nobel and have interviewed employees in different business units to investigate their view on communication and the influence of IT. We found that IT has had a relatively great impact on the internal communication and that the new technology often work as a complement to the traditional communication channels. We believe that IT will lead to an increased amount of written communication and that the communication will be detached from persons. There is a risk that the amount of information will increase and that this will make it harder for the individual to find relevant information. For IT to be an efficient channel for companies in the future, we believe that companies must educate employees regarding technology, pedagogic and written presentation.

Communication Channels, Social Support and Satisfaction in Long Distance Romantic Relationships

Yin, Lijuan 14 August 2009 (has links)
Based on uses and gratification theory, media richness theory, and social presence theory, the present study explores the role of different communication channels and social support in relationship maintenance among long distance dating partners. Specifically, how social support is related to relational uncertainty, how the use of different communication channels is related to social support variables, and what are main factors of relationship satisfaction are examined in this study. A total of 311 respondents participated in the study. All of four social support variables, emotional support, socializing, advice/guidance and support appraisals were found to be negatively related to relational uncertainty. In addition, both phone call and webcam use were positively related to all support behaviors and support appraisals, while email use was positively related to advice/guidance and support appraisals. Finally, the regression results suggested that emotional support, socializing, support appraisals, phone call, and webcam use were positive predictors of relationship satisfaction, whereas text messaging negatively predicted relationship satisfaction.

Bilateral Control of Base-Excited Hydraulic Manipulators Operating under a Delayed and Lossy Network

Maddahi, Yaser 15 January 2014 (has links)
Teleoperation of hydraulic manipulators is of potential when the presence of the operator, in a remote location, is inconvenient or dangerous. Augmenting such teleoperated systems using haptic sensation will further enhance performance, safety, and convenience. The advantage of using haptic force becomes more evident when it is employed to compensate for undesirable phenomena such as existence of a delayed and lossy communication channel or excitation of the manipulator base. The focus of this thesis is on haptic-enabled control of base-excited hydraulic manipulators that are controlled through a wireless communication channel. The targeted application is live transmission line maintenance. Both unilateral and bilateral controls of teleoperated hydraulic manipulators are studied. On the unilateral front, position error is shown to be an important issue, especially when the position accuracy of the slave manipulator is violated due to fast motion of the operator’s hand at the master site, lack of responsiveness in actuation system, or poor quality of communication channel. With respect to bilateral control, three main challenges are identified, and solutions to these challenges are investigated: (i) accurate control of the slave manipulator when the communication channel is delayed and/or lossy, (ii) control of the teleoperated system when the slave manipulator is mounted atop a moving platform, and (iii) transparent force feedback to improve the position tracking of the system. First, effects of network quality and slave manipulator base excitation are examined on performance of the teleoperated system. The position error between the haptic device implement and the hydraulic manipulator end-effector is shown to increase when the network is delayed and lossy. Next, excitation of the slave manipulator base deviates the end-effector from its reference trajectory, and the position error therefore becomes larger. To alleviate the position inaccuracy, a position referenced force feedback scheme is proposed. The scheme makes the input dynamics a better match with the slave dynamics. Combined with the virtual fixture force, the virtual fixture is shown to aid the operator in following a predefined virtual fixture trajectory. Due to complexity of dynamics, performance evaluations are mostly conducted using experimental validations on actual system in a laboratory setting.

Communication and sales channels' role in international market entry for innovative new venture firms : A case study on TLight

Winblad von Walter, Emma January 2017 (has links)
Globalisation has taken the world by storm by opening opportunities for new markets and easier communication. The general economic climate during the last decade is one reason to this, and the impact has resulted in internationalisation as a key strategy for survival. This has affected many kinds of industries and companies, not least new venture firms. There is today a competitive market climate where companies need to have a strategic advantage to succeed. One advantage could be to increase customer value through the selection of communication channels and sales channels, which has resulted in the following research objective: The purpose of this study is to examine how international market entry decisions based on customer perceived value can affect the choice of communication and sales channel strategies for new venture firms in a B2B context. This study has been of exploratory descriptive kind where a qualitative data collection has been conducted through in-depth interviews with five gemmologists active worldwide. The results of the research were varied since the respondents had different opinions, but some conclusions could still be made. The findings suggest the use of a multiple channel strategy regarding sales channel. The study also highlights the importance of 1) Building and cherishing customer relations, 2) Looking up potential resellers or distributors, 3) Communicating a solution and not a product and finally 4) Focus on internet advertising rather than paper and television. Since this study has been of qualitative kind, one suggestion for future research is to make a quantitative study of the same study to confirm the previously mentioned findings. These findings are due to the nature of the study only implications, but a quantitative study would make them generalizable.

Using Enterprise Social Networks for Internal Communication : A Case Study about Organisational Actors' Experience

Brandin, Hanna, Bylin, Amanda January 2017 (has links)
Internal communication is a subject increasing in importance. This subject has, as many other things, been influenced by the Internet-based and connected world that we live in today. As a result, Enterprise Social Networks has appeared as a tool for organisations to use. While the usage of this tool is growing, the existing research on the subject is yet very limited. So is the research on employees‘ needs when it comes to internal communication. In this study, we aim to fill these gaps, by exploring the use of these enterprise social networks from an organisational actor‘s perspective. In order to fulfil this purpose, a qualitative case study within multiple embedded units of analysis was used. The empirical material was gathered through in-depth semi- structured interviews as well as observations. Furthermore, we took on real-life experience by using the ESN tool ourselves. Several themes were then identified using a thematic analysis. By using this method, we conclude that organisational actors use ESNs for private, public and remote communication. We also provide the reader with five characteristics of ESNs that are perceived as important by organisational actors, namely; easy to learn, easy to use, accessible, informal and avoids disturbance. Several perceived outcomes resulting from ESN usage is then identified. We conclude the study by explaining that if organisations identify a need for an ESN, use it in the right way, and have the appropriate culture, the implementation of an ESN can be very beneficial. This, as organisational actors experience it as a good tool for internal communication.
