A landscape approach to the archaeology of the Vredefort Dome

Byrne, Patrick Joseph 18 September 2012 (has links)
New technologies are continuously being developed that can aid us in archaeological research. The purpose of this project is to revisit an area containing Late Iron Age (LIA) Stone Walled Structures (SWS) that have received sporadic archaeological research over time, and employ new techniques and technologies to test/re-evaluate previous findings. This involves developing new mapping techniques, which involve the use of Geographical Positioning Systems (GPS), which allowed for a wide survey/mapping exercise in a time effective and budget conscious manner. From these data, a new typology was created in order to reflect new types as well as further segregate exiting types. The resulting data was analysed in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) environment, allowing us to tackle issues such as spatial distribution and landscape patterns in a digital environment. This analysis allowed us to re-evaluate the original spatial distribution, looking at possible reasons for the inaccuracies in the original study. We then explore the implications of these new data. We tested the results of these analyses based on proposed scenarios for the location of these sites, in order to try better understand the positioning, as we as identify possible diagnostic sites that can undergo further examination.

In this wave of urbanization and renewal across major cities of China, Guangzhou young activists step in the old communities, try to preserve cultures and values remained in the communities, and re-think alternative modes of urbanization and modernization. They take part in the movement through the Internet and social network, and being active participants, they consider engaging in the community development. However, there are conflicts beyond cultural conservation, between modern and traditional values, and between territorial and other cultures. These conflicts are deeply embedded in the construction process of Guangzhou territory identity, and shall be tackled by movement activists. This research aims to investigate first the construction of collective identity of cultural conservation movement by framing, and second how the two processes change. The interplay of framing and collective identity is significant: framing helps shape the collective identity at the preliminary stage; personal identity suggests frame extension to construct new collective identity. / Detailed summary in vernacular field only. / "2012 nian 9 yue". / Thesis (M.Phil.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2012. / Includes bibliographical references (leaves 84-88). / Abstract in Chinese and English. / Shi De'an.

Ramírez Vázquez, Mónica 30 March 2012 (has links)

Heating regimes in old Swedish churches, c. 1880-1980

Legnér, Mattias, Geijer, Mia January 2012 (has links)
The paper will highlight the use of heating regimes throughout the twentieth century both in large cathedrals and rural churches of medieval origin in Sweden. How have norms of thermal comfort been balanced against conservation needs of the buildings, their interiors and valuable objects? The choice of heating regime in an old church can be seen as a negotiation between different stakeholders. Together these voices have been articulating a discourse on indoor climate since the late nineteenth century when churches in Sweden were first heated. The historical indoor climate in churches is poorly known but often referred to in discussions on what kind of heating and climate is suitable for interiors and their artifacts. This is why it is important to collect empirically based knowledge on the features of the past climate. The historical indoor climate is shaped by several factors. Here we look at heating regimes, meaning how heating and ventilation systems have been selected, designed and used. By studying decision making regarding the choice of regimes and also what experience was drawn from the application of technology we will better understand the priorities made between comfort and conservation aims and how scientific knowledge has been used (or not used) to reach these aims.
