Everything and the Kitchen Sink; or, Towards an Understanding of a Creative Practice, "Codex Symphonia," Metamodernism, and Rhizomic Composition

Reeder, Kory 05 1900 (has links)
Creativity is not a hierarchical, but an intertextual, rhizomic process, pulling from a vast array of interests, experiences, and influences. These feed into each other, to inform and motivate artists as creating persons in an ongoing process we call the creative act. Anytime an artist sets out to make something, they are experiencing a dynamic yet concentrated moment of energy in the chaotic cloud of creativity. To demonstrate this, I explore several ideas that inform my piece, Codex Symphonia, including musical influences, but also visual art, film, literature, philosophy, social theory, and politics. In this document, I show that the act of creating a musical work is a deeply personal process that relies heavily on the experiences and vast network of influences on the composer. With this document I look to the contextual structure(s) that point to the possibilities that a work might exist. That is to say that the composition Codex Symphonia is a specific result of an extensive network of ideas and influences not coming from a single origin—it is, in fact all of them together at the same time in a metamodernist act of reconciliation.

Elipe Gimeno, Javier 12 December 2015 (has links)
This work studies the relationship between the film’s narrative language and the contemporary music speech. The starting point of this work is the study of the new contemporary scores, which were composed for silent films from the 1920’s onwards. To reach these goals, we started from a theoretical vision, to subsequently perform a practical analysis. This gave us the important points to create our analysis model to be used for music composition. This model allows us to clarify the relationship between the film and the music, based on two main axes: the “anchoring points” (giving us the articulation points between the music and the film) and the “reference points” (which deals with the formal elements of both film and music speech). In the last part of our work, we have applied our model to the composition of four personal projects, which were created as an artistic conclusion of our research.

Fayos Jordán, José Miguel 06 June 2022 (has links)
[EN] The aesthetic revolution that the twentieth century has seen, where a multitude of proposals arose, reached the different instrumental groups in a disparate way. While symphonic and chamber music lived a rebirth sponsored by new compositional techniques, the wind orchestra was stuck in an apparent context of tonality and modality that, far from evolving at the same time as the other formations, has experienced an apparent retreat towards postures more conservative aesthetics. The present work arises from the need to evolve the current repertoire for wind orchestra, deepening its timbral possibilities and developing a repertoire that addresses composition for wind orchestra, from a current perspective that develops some of the main aesthetic currents of the avant-garde musical of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Next, a detailed analysis of the compositional processes addressed in each of the works under study is elaborated, without losing the perspective of the fundamental objective; the composition of two works that develop the sound potential of the orchestral wind and percussion formation within a contemporary style. Previously, some of the most important contributions to the genre made by different composers are exposed, which have meant a real and significant connection of the new compositional proposals of the 20th and 21st centuries with the formation of winds in their orchestral or large ensemble concretion. Especially noteworthy are those proposals by authors closely related to the wind repertoire, especially in its band aspect. At the same time, other works by significant authors within the orchestral and chamber repertoire are referenced, who have made sporadic contributions to the wind orchestra / ensemble. Contributions that for their originality or style framed in the aesthetic compositional currents of the XX and XXI, imply an outstanding fact for the wind and percussion genre. Elements of cross-cultural music composition : the creation of Esidialo-- a Samia marriage suite

Musungu, Gabriel Joseph 07 1900 (has links)
Cross – cultural composition has been defined as the creation of a cultural synthesis of the old and new, traditional and foreign into philosophical, artistic, stylistic and aesthetic product that communicates to various audiences. The study adopted a mode of creativity / dynamic approach through the synthesis of traditional Samia marriage music and Western compositional techniques and approaches. To ground the study in the rich cultural traditions of the Samia people of Funyula Division in Western Province of Kenya, an anthropological documentation formed an important part of the study. The study adopted Absolute Formalism theory by Reimer (1989) based on component relationships in which different parts like harmony, melody, and text rhythm relate to one another to create unity. The study also incorporated Aesthetic Functionalism theory by Akuno (1997) on social functions in which; the contextual meaning of the composition was based. The study used the Accommodation theory on Convergence, Giles and Smith (Giles & St Clair, 1979) to unify the analogous aspects in the two stated theories. In the study, descriptive and creative designs were used to cater for the music and social context. In the descriptive phase, Samia marriage folk songs were collected from traditional performers, who were also, interviewed using a questionnaire. Purposeful and snowball sampling techniques were used to select twenty folk songs. They were recorded, transcribed and analysed for dominant traditional musical features and compositional promise. In the creative phase, lyrics were identified and reorganised, the prevalent features isolated and used. The result was a compositional inspiration on which the Marriage Suite was based. The ultimate product of the study was an artistic model framework that could guide the creation of art music using Kenyan traditional music idioms; accomplished through the Marriage Suite. To safeguard contextual and music fidelity, member checking was consistently maintained during data collection and creative phase. Rhythmic and melodic accuracy of the transcribed songs was ascertained by play backs using FINALE music notation. Social identity in the composition was taken into account through use of Samia music characteristics that included intervals, solo-responsorial aspects, overlapping entries, parallelism and common rhythmic patterns. / Art History, Visual Arts & Musicology / D.
