Quality-Driven Synthesis and Optimization of Embedded Control Systems

Samii, Soheil January 2011 (has links)
This thesis addresses several synthesis and optimization issues for embedded control systems. Examples of such systems are automotive and avionics systems in which physical processes are controlled by embedded computers through sensor and actuator interfaces. The execution of multiple control applications, spanning several computation and communication components, leads to a complex temporal behavior that affects control quality. The relationship between system timing and control quality is a key issue to consider across the control design and computer implementation phases in an integrated manner. We present such an integrated framework for scheduling, controller synthesis, and quality optimization for distributed embedded control systems. At runtime, an embedded control system may need to adapt to environmental changes that affect its workload and computational capacity. Examples of such changes, which inherently increase the design complexity, are mode changes, component failures, and resource usages of the running control applications. For these three cases, we present trade-offs among control quality, resource usage, and the time complexity of design and runtime algorithms for embedded control systems. The solutions proposed in this thesis have been validated by extensive experiments. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and importance of the presented techniques.

A novel induction heating system using multilevel neutral point clamped inverter

Al Shammeri, Bashar Mohammed Flayyih January 2017 (has links)
This thesis investigates a novel DC/AC resonant inverter of Induction Heating (IH) system presenting a Multilevel Neutral Point Clamped (MNPCI) topology, as a new part of power supply design. The main function of the prototype is to provide a maximum and steady state power transfer from converter to the resonant load tank, by achieving zero current switching (ZCS) with selecting the best design of load tank topology, and utilizing the advantage aspects of both the Voltage Fed Inverter (VFI) and Current Fed Inverter (CFI) kinds, therefore it can considered as a hybrid-inverter (HVCFI) category . The new design benefits from series resonant inverter design through using two bulk voltage source capacitors to feed a constant voltage delivery to the MNPCI inverter with half the DC rail voltage to decrease the switching losses and mitigate the over voltage surge occurred in inverter switches during operation which may cause damage when dealing with high power systems. Besides, the design profits from the resonant load topology of parallel resonant inverter, through using the LLC resonant load tank. The design gives the advantage of having an output current gain value of about Quality Factor (Q) times the inverter current and absorbs the parasitic components. On the contrary, decreasing inverter current means decreasing the switching frequency and thus, decreasing the switching losses of the system. This aspect increases the output power, which increases the heating efficiency. In order for the proposed system to be more reliable and matches the characteristics of IH process , the prototype is modelled with a variable LLC topology instead of fixed load parameters with achieving soft switching mode of ZCS and zero voltage switching (ZVS) at all load conditions and a tiny phase shift angle between output current and voltage, which might be neglected. To achieve the goal of reducing harmonic distortion, a new harmonic control modulation is introduced, by controlling the ON switching time to obtain minimum Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) content accompanied with optimum power for heating energy.

Estudo da aplicabilidade do processo de descontaminação de drogas vegetais empregando óxido de etileno / Study applicability decontamination process of medicinal drugs through ethylene oxide

Satomi, Lucilia Cristina 17 June 2003 (has links)
The consumption of medicinal plants has significantly increased in Brazil in the last decades. Data from the World Health Organization estimate that 80% of the world population use medicinal plants as a therapeutic alternative. However, little information is available about their components and their potential risks to human health. Thus every subject related to the quality of those drugs is of fundamental importance. Due to their natural origin, the bioburden detected in vegetal drugs often be considered high, what is a potencial risk to their consumers. These can have their safety assure; however, through the evaluation of the drugs microbial quality and the use of decontamination processes. Therefore the aim of this work was the determination of the microbial contamination levels and the research of pathogenics microorganisms; besides the efficacy of a 30 to 60 minutes exposure to ethylene oxide of bacteria, moulds and yeasts and also the determination of toxic residues and the verification of possible alterations in the leveIs of marker compounds in samples of Matricaria recutita L., Cynara scolimus L., Paulinia cupana H.B.K. and Ginkgo biloba L., deriving from three different suppliers. All the analyzed medicinal plants presented high levels of bacteria, moulds and yeasts, around 105 ufc/g, and pathogenic microorganisms have also been detected in the samples. However after their exposure ethylene oxide exposition for 30 and 60 minutes, an elimination of about 90% and 99,8%, respectively, was observed. The presence of the pathogenic microorganisms was completely eliminated after 30 minutes of exposure to gas. The residual leveis of ethylene oxide in the analyzed medicinal plants were reduced to acceptable levels after 14 days of environmental aeration. As for the ethylene glicol and ethylene chlorhidrin levels, these were within the sensibility limits of the adopted method. No alteration was observed in chamomile, ginkgo biloba and guaraná, regarding the marker compounds concentration, even after a 60 minutes cycle exposure to ethylene oxide gas. The results led us to the conclusion that microbial decontamination methods are necessary in order to provide safer products to consumers, as they are often consumed by sick people, among which several elders and children. We can also conclude that the decontamination process of medicinal drugs through ethylene oxide is an effective and safe process, provided the necessary safety requirements are adopted, what doesn\'t always happen.

Potencialidade da injeção seqüencial no monitoramento em tempo real de indicadores de qualidade de águas naturais e residuais / Potentiality of sequential injection in real-time monitoring of indicators of quality of natural water and waste

Galhardo, Cristiane Xavier 04 May 2001 (has links)
The present work presents the development of analytical methodologies based on Sequential Injection Analysis (SIA) for determination of phosphate and silicate, nitrite and nitrate, as well as speciation Fe(II)/Fe(III) in environmental samples with emphasis for aquatic environments. All determinations were performed using molecular absorption spectrophotometry at the visible range of the spectrum as the detection technique. The determination of phosphate and silicate was based on the reaction of both anions with ammonium molybdate in acidic medium, followed by reduction of Mo(VI) to Mo(V) with ascorbic acid. The SIA procedure was developed to avoid the mutual interference of both species exploiting the complexation of the molybdate by oxalic acid. The determination of nitrite was based on the diazotation reaction with sulfanilamide and N-l naphtyl ethylenediamine dihydrochlorine (NED), while the determination of Fe(II) were based on the complexation with 1,10 phenantroline. The determination of nitrate and Fe(III) were based on the same reactions, performed after their reduction to nitrite and Fe(II) in reducing columns containing cooperized cadmium and amalgamated zinc, respectively. The stability of the analytical curves was evaluated in different working days, in which no variations greater than 5% were observed during a period of 4 consecutive days. The sequential injection analysis was exploited to regenerate the reducing columns in the time interval between two sample. The stability of the analytical curves, the easy and automatic regeneration of the reducing columns, as well as the possibility to perform sampling through tangential filtration, which permits the analysis to be performed in real time, are characteristics that show the potential application of the sequential injection systems in automatic stations for monitoring the soluble fraction of pollution indicators in natural waste waters.
