School Level Predictors of Bullying Among High School Students

Bullying is a universal problem affecting the emotional, social, and physical wellbeing of school-age children worldwide. Individual level correlates of bullying have been well-documented; however, there is limited research identifying variables at the school level which contribute to bullying involvement, especially among high school students. In this dissertation, school characteristics associated with bullying were investigated using an ecological systems framework. In the first paper, a comprehensive review of the bullying literature was conducted. Research in the following areas were summarized: definitions of bullying, measures of bullying, individual correlates, influences of cognitive development and social context across age groups, contextual variables (family, school, and community), evidence-based interventions, and bullying from a socio-ecological perspective. In the second paper, research findings are presented for an original study investigating school level predictors of bullying involvement across Kentucky high schools. The study used aggregated data from a survey of 9th to 12th grade students in 26 high schools across the state, combined with existing school datasets, in order to examine: (1) the prevalence of bullies, victims, and bully-victims across Kentucky high schools and (2) school characteristics associated with elevated rates of bullying involvement. Results revealed important differences in school bullying incident reports and student reports of bullying experiences, as well as unique differences between school environments with high and low rates of bullying involvement. Overall, academic performance and parent involvement were the strongest predictors of bullying involvement at the school level; however, the relationships between these variables and prevalence rates were not as expected. In several analyses, individual level findings from the bullying research did not translate to the school level as hypothesized. Overall, these findings have important implications for researchers when using multilevel analyses in the school context, when investigating the impact of bullying interventions at the school level, and when investigating how the school environment contributes to bullying. Results also provide important information for schools developing or revising bullying data collection procedures.

Easing Reentry of Incarcerated Youth With and Without Disabilities Through Employability and Social Skills Training

When incarcerated youth – those with and those without disabilities – face the prospect of reentering the community, they have many obstacles to overcome. Employment requirements are often associated with terms of parole or aftercare. Those who fail to obtain and maintain employment often reenter the juvenile justice system instead of successfully reentering society. Research shows employment is critical for successful transition from incarceration back in to the community. Limited information is available about programs that positively impact post-incarceration employment for juveniles, however. Practitioners face the challenge of selecting effective curriculum, interventions, or supports. Unfortunately, the current knowledge base provides limited guidance about teaching employability and social skills to incarcerated youth. This study evaluated one instructional program, Ready for W.A.G.E.S., that teaches competencies for employability and social skills to incarcerated youth for the purposes of easing reentry. This instructional program was evaluated using a quasi-experimental, wait list control design with a sample of 22 incarcerated youth in one long-term juvenile justice facility. The results are varied, with the standardized instruments showing no statistically significant findings, but the qualitative evidence showing significant impact. Changes were made to the Ready for W.A.G.E.S. instructional program as a result of this study.

Racial Reproductive Control Logics and the Reproductive Justice Movement

The reproductive justice movement gives a voice and representation to women of color whose experience of reproductive control is impacted by intersecting layers of oppression. This thesis uses an intersectional approach to develop the concept of racial reproductive control logics, which describes the relationship between racial logics and racial patterns of reproductive control. The study uses qualitative interviews and content analysis of organizational material to explore how the reproductive justice movement is influenced by racial reproductive control logics.

L'objectif de cette étude est de résoudre les qualités de vol d'une aile volante long courrier, au stade de la conception avion. Le concept d'aile volante promet un gain important en terme de performances et de niveau de finesse par rapport aux configurations classiques. Ce gain est obtenu par l'intégration des quatre fonctions principales de l'avion (portance, contrôle, propulsion, transport) dans un seul corps. Ces choix de configuration entraînent des challenges à relever, dont l'obtention de qualités de vol respectant la certification. La configuration initiale étudiée présente de fortes instabilités longitudinales et latérales, une faible autorité en roulis, et des difficultés à effectuer la manœuvre de rotation au décollage. Dans cette étude sont proposées des solutions, combinant des surfaces de contrôle innovantes et des degrés de libertés originaux, qui tirent profit des avantages de la configuration. Les qualités de vols sont résolues dans un processus de résolution avec aussi peu de boucles que possible, et l'impact sur les performances est minimisé. En sortie de ce processus se trouve l'architecture de surface de contrôle optimisée, qui minimise l'impact des qualités de vol sur le coût de la mission. / The aim of this study is to solve the handling qualities problems of a long range blended wing body, at the conceptual design phase. That concept, also named flying wing in this report, is an aircraft which integrates the four aircraft functions (lift, control, propulsion, passengers transportation) in one single body. That configuration presents a benefit in cruise lift-over-drag ratio, as well as in noise emissions, due to the shielding effect provided by the inner wing to mask the engine noise.That configuration choice leads also to challenges. One of them is the handling qualities. The baseline studied flying wing presents initially longitudinal and lateral instabilities, as well as lack of roll manoeuvrability and difficulty to do the rotation at takeoff. In this report are proposed solutions, combining innovative control surfaces and original drivers, which are adapted to the configuration advantages. The handling qualitiesare solved in a resolution process with as few loops as possible, and the impact on the performances is minimized. The output of that process is the best control surfaces architecture and airfoils design which minimizes the impact of the handling qualities resolution on the cost of the mission.

Topology optimization of flextensional piezoelectric actuators with active control law. / Otimização topológica de atuadores piezelétricos flextensionais com lei de controle ativo.

Flextensional actuators assembled in association with piezoceramics feature the amplification of nanometric displacements generated by the ceramics energy conversion. For applications that require high precision positioning or vibration response attenuation, such as hard disc reading or atomic force microscopy, a response tracking control needs to be implemented. Shell and plate piezoactuators with vibration control have been extensively studied in literature, however the design of controlled piezoelectric systems by means of the Topology Optimization Method (TOM) has not been fully explored in literature yet, and is generally focused on the frequency domain transient analysis, which employs a model reduction method for the sake of computational implementation. Dealing with transient analysis of flextensional piezoelectric actuators, an active closed loop control design is more suited for the positioning and vibration problem, which consists on measuring the outputs of the system by the closed loop sensor layer, whose signal is modified by a control gain and eventually inputted into the actuator layer so the system response signal is modulated. Aiming to enhance the active feedback control in piezoelectric actuators (PEAs), this work targets the design of the flextensional microstructure considering an active velocity feedback control (AVFC), where the active piezoelectric sensing and actuating cycles imply in an extra damping to the system. Therefore, the flextensional mechanism compliance shall be distributed within the design domain by the allocation of void regions where there should be the flexible hinges. Such a design can be accomplished by means of the TOM, which employs a systematic analysis of the dynamic model through the finite element method (FEM). In this work, the finite element (FE) system model takes into account the piezoelectric ceramics intermediate nodes, what is denominated as non-collapsed piezoelectric nodes model, and whose induced voltage during the time domain dynamic response contributes to the active control of the system. The topology optimization (TO) problem is formulated for the system vibration suppression at the restoring position and at the actuated position (positioner) subject to material volume and design variables constraints. The TOM implemented is based on the solid isotropic material with penalization (SIMP), the dynamic adjoint sensitivity, and on the optimization solver known as sequential linear programming (SLP). To illustrate the method, bidimensional examples of optimized topologies are numerically obtained by employing different velocity feedback control gains, and the topologies efficiency are compared and contrasted. / Atuadores piezoelétricos flextensionais funcionam como amplificadores nanométricos dos deslocamentos gerados pela piezocerâmica. Em sistemas que necessitam de alta precisão de posicionamento final ou baixa energia de vibração após sofrer um impacto, como na leitura de um disco rígido ou na microscopia de força atômica, requer-se que o atuador conte com um fator de correção de posicionamento, o qual pode ser obtido através de uma lei de controle. A utilização de material piezoelétrico para o controle de vibração em dispositivos de casca e placa foi amplamente abordado na literatura, porém o projeto de sistemas piezoelétricos controlados utilizando-se do Método da Otimização Topológica (MOT) foi pouco explorado e em geral é focado na análise transiente no domínio da frequência, o qual necessita que o problema tenha que ser reduzido para que a implementação computacional torne-se viável. Tratando-se de análise transiente em atuadores piezoelétricos flextensionais pode-se considerar o emprego de um controle ativo, o qual captura informações do dispositivo através de piezo-sensores e as realimenta na forma de um sinal de entrada em piezo-atuadores para modulação do sinal de resposta. Visando aprimorar o efeito do controle ativo em atuadores piezelétricos, este trabalho é voltado para o projeto de sua estrutura flextensional considerando o controle ativo de realimentação de velocidade, em que o ciclo envolvendo sensoreamento e atuação piezoelétricos fornece um amortecimento extra ao sistema. Deseja-se portanto que a flexibilidade do mecanismo flextensional seja distribuída no domínio de projeto pré-definido alocando vazios em regiões ao redor de onde devem estar presentes articulações da estrutura flexível, o que é obtido pelo MOT. Para encontrar a distribuição otimizada de material no domínio de projeto, o MOT emprega a análise sistemática do modelo dinâmico através do Método dos Elementos Finitos (MEF). Neste trabalho a modelagem do sistema para o MEF leva em consideração a presença dos nós intermediários das cerâmicas piezoelétricas, denominada modelagem para nós não colapsados, cuja tensão gerada ao longo da resposta dinâmica temporal influencia no controle ativo do sistema. O problema de Otimização Topológica (OT) é formulado para a atenuação da vibração do sistema em posição neutra e em posição atuada (posicionador) sujeito a restrições de volume e a valores máximo e mínimo que as variaveis de projeto assumem. A implementação do MOT é baseada no modelo de material denominado Material Isotrópico Sólido com Penalização (MISP), no cálculo da sensibilidade dinâmica adjunta, e na rotina de otimização conhecida como Programação Linear Sequencial (PLS). Para ilustrar o método, são projetados dispositivos bidimensionais e diferentes ganhos de controle de realimentação de velocidade são utilizados para obtenção da topologia otimizada, analisando-se a eficiência em cada caso.

Développement d'une loi de commande avancée pour la maitrise des vibrations des robots sériels à liaisons flexibles / Development of an advanced control law for vibration control of flexible link serial robots

De nos jours, les exigences en productivité dans le monde industriel imposent aux robots un comportement optimal en termes de précision géométrique et dynamique, et en termes de temps de réponse. Ainsi, la présence des flexibilités dans les liaisons pivots des structures mécaniques légères se déplaçant à grande vitesse et sous charges importantes peut limiter dynamiquement la précision et le temps de stabilisation sur la pose finale du robot. La problématique traitée dans ces travaux concerne la maîtrise des vibrations des robots sériels à liaisons flexibles durant les opérations de prise et dépose (Pick and Place).Dans ces travaux, nous effectuons une modélisation et une identification expérimentale des paramètres géométriques et dynamique d’un robot à liaisons flexible. Ce modèle sera utilisé dans la synthèse d’une loi de commande basée modèle dédiée aux robots à flexibilité articulaire. Cette stratégie permet de réduire les vibrations lors des phases exigeantes dynamiquement. Des simulations sur un robot Scara sont alors conduites pour valider la pertinence de cette loi de commande qui intègre un modèle des flexibilités présentes dans les liaisons pivots dans le schéma de commande. Nous appliquons sur le même simulateur du robot à liaisons flexibles trois autres stratégies de commande afin de faire une comparaison (commande PD, commande dédiée aux robots rigides et commande ne considérant pas les amortissements). Le schéma de la loi de commande basée modèle permet de respecter la précision de pose finale avec une diminution du temps de stabilisation. Finalement, Le calcul de l’erreur d’asservissement nous a permis de constater l’influence des erreurs de modélisation de la flexibilité sur la précision de la tâche. Dans ce contexte, une analyse de sensibilité aux paramètres influents est établie. / Nowadays, the demand of productivity in the industrial world of robotics require robots to behave optimally in terms of geometric and dynamic accuracy and response time. Thus, the presence of flexibilities in rotational joints can dynamically limit the position control of manipulators having lighter arms, higher payload-to-weight ratio and doing tasks at high speed. The problem addressed in this work concerns the vibration control of serial robots with flexible joints performing Pick and Place tasks. In this work, we carry out modelling and experimental identification of the geometric and dynamic parameters of a robot with flexible joints. This model is then used in the synthesis of a model-based control law dedicated to manipulators with flexible joints. This strategy reduces vibrations resulting from joints sensitivity during dynamically demanding phases. Simulations on a Scara robot are then conducted to validate the relevance of the proposed control law which integrates joint flexibilities in the form of a feedback loop in the control diagram. To this end, three other control strategies (PD control, control dedicated to rigid structures and control not considering damping) are applied to the same simulator in order to make a comparative analysis. The diagram of the model-based control law allows to respect the set point with a reduction in the stabilization time.Finally, the calculation of the servo error allowed us to see the influence of flexibility modeling errors on the accuracy of the task. In this context, the sensitivity of this control law is evaluated through a sensitivity analysis.

Silent Cries: Black Women and State-Sponsored Violence

The intention of this study is to contribute to research on Black women and to bring awareness to Black women's experiences, as they navigate social institutions. This study examines the perception of the intersectionality of race and gender impacts their awareness of police violence against Black women. Researchers measured respondent's perceptions/attitudes regarding intersectionality and their awareness of people who had been victimized by police violence. The quantitative study is comprised of statements regarding patriarchy and/or sexism and statements concerning racism and/or the lack thereof. The data analysis indicates that respondents' awareness and sensitivity to racism along with their perception of sexism and patriarchy is associated with their awareness of police victims. The researcher's findings found that the intersectionality of race and gender impacts their awareness of police violence against Black women.
