Methods to improve the effectiveness of a manual pick and place operation : A case study in a logistics regional distribution centre located at Jönköping, Sweden.

Vadakkekara Bhaskaran, Bibin, Shaji, Visakh January 2018 (has links)
Introduction: In today’s global world, supply chain and logistics operations have become far too complicated to be handled by individual firms. Nowadays, it is dealt by logistics and freight solution providing companies. The companies introduce an amount of flexibility for the firms doing their business. The performance of supply chain operations depends upon various dimensions such as location, quality, on-time delivery, dependability and cost. Reducing the operational costs by increasing effectiveness of process helps to gain a competitive advantage. Background: Logistics is a highly labour intensive industry. The primary role of a distribution centre as a supply chain element is to sort and forward the incoming goods(parcels) as effectively as possible within the minimum time. Due to the varied physical attributes of incoming goods/parcels, the sorting process in distribution centres involves different handling techniques. One such technique is the use of a parcel sorter conveyor system, there are various factors based on which the output increases or decreases in such systems. Flexibility is a factor that is seldom compromised, thus failing to operate effectively when volume increases, reduce a competitive advantage for the any distribution centre. Purpose: The purpose is to identify reasons for ineffectiveness during the process and find improvement opportunities which enables a distribution centre to handle more volume on a daily basis. Case: This single case study is carried out at a regional distribution centre aiming to grow regarding the number of suppliers and volume of handled parcels. Findings: The sources of ineffectiveness and improvement opportunities were identified (some of the improvement opportunities are case specific). Discussions: The study provides evidence that errors which are thought to be caused due to human actions can have other root causes, a synergetic approach is suitable in situations where high interdependency of variables exist.   Conclusions: The study has focused on a single case study, conducting the similar type of study with other companies working within a similar environment can provide more generalisable evidence. Improvement should be seen with a mentality of sustaining, with high variability of changes occurring, there should be a focus towards continuous improvement as well.

Technical solutions for automation of warehouse operations and their implementation challenges

Nilsson, Adam, Elmar Merkle, Daniel January 2018 (has links)
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to focus on the challenges with the implementation of technical solutions for automation of warehouse operations for the movement and tracking of goods. Additionally, the focus is on the similarities and differences between the identified challenges in theory and practice. MethodologyThis study employs a qualitative research strategy with a cross-sectional research design. A qualitative analysis of the challenges for the automation of warehouse operations is done, with the help of semi-structured interviews of 9 different companies.TheoryThe theory chapter starts with an introduction of warehouse management systems (WMS) and the differentiation between the main and supportive warehouse processes, whereby the focus is drawn on the supportive processes. The supportive processes are differentiated into the movement and tracking of goods. For the movement of goods automated guided vehicles (AGVs), Automated forklifts and Automated conveyor systems are analyzed. For the tracking of goods Barcodes, QR-Codes and RFID technology is examined. These two areas are also analyzed regarding their identified challenges. AnalysisThe analysis is based on the identification of the challenges from theory and empirical data for the tracking and movement of goods within a warehouse. Therefore, the empirical perceived challenges are processed and merged together. Afterwards, the theoretical and empirical identified challenges are compared for each of the technical solutions for automation for the movement and tracking of goods. Additionally, a comparison between the degrees of importance of the perceived challenges is drawn. Conclusion Technical solutions for automation for the movement and tracking of goods perceived in theory and practice are analyzed in this thesis. The conclusion of this study is that there are differences and similarities between the challenges for the movement and tracking of goods. Regarding the movement of goods, theory is more directed to see challenges after the implementation in contrast to the focus of practice on the pre-implementation challenges. For the tracking of goods, the perceived challenges in practice are more about the usage and not as technical oriented as the theory.

Untersuchungen der akustischen Wirkung von Tragrollen zur zielgerichteten Lärmminderung an Gurtförderanlagen / Investigations of the acoustical effect of idlers for a purposeful noise reduction on belt conveyor systems

Täschner, Dirk 17 July 2017 (has links) (PDF)
Belt conveyor systems are used in mining operations and other industry sectors to transport bulk material. The plant operation is being linked to noise emissions. During inspections and maintenance this can cause an increased noise exposure for affected employees. In the environment of residential buildings or areas in need of protection the exceedance of immission guideline values can lead to a temporary operational limitation of these highly efficient plants. Noise abatement measures primarily at the source or in the vicinity are required to reduce noise immission. The idlers on the carrying belt side of the belt conveyor systems are of crucial importance to the acoustical properties. Their sound power level is determinable at different belt speeds with a test stand for idlers. The results allow conclusions about the mechanical stress and sound emissions during operation in a belt conveyor system. The thesis identifies the sources of noise during the roll process and places them in conjunction with the properties of the surface and the centre offset of the axis. The examination of these two parameters is based on a total indicator reading (TIR) measurement. The angle-dependent data obtained allow a calculation of the eccentricity of the axis and the curve of the circular deviation of the roller tubes. Therefrom derived characteristic values serve as specifications for the adaptation and development of manufacturing processes as well as for a careful selection of low noise idlers for belt conveyors.

Modifikace materiálového toku zásobování výroby / Modification of material flow of the manufacturing supplies

Hloušek, David January 2017 (has links)
The main content of this thesis is analysis and proposal of supplying between storages in company Hella Autotechnik Nova in Mohelnice. The main content of creation of this company is wide sort of front headlamps, rear and break lights, but also there is some sort of its washers for the most famous cars brands. Otherwise this thesis is about modification of basic layout, what can be seen there nowadays between external storage Meriva and logistic centre, what is located in main building of this company.
