A New Approach To The Idea Of Environment In The Light Of Zurek&#039 / s Existential Interpretation

Olcek, Deniz 01 September 2012 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis aims to contribute to ecocentric views by revising and criticising Callicott&#039 / s conception of environment and ecocentric ethics that he develops in the light of ecology and the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum physics. The thesis also aims to support the ecocentric point of view by suggesting a different approach to the conception of environment in the light of the Existential Interpretation.

In this investigation we will focus on the period of consolidation of the quantum theory, specially, on what concerns the book Logic of Scientific Discovery, of 1934. The center of this investigation is the Popper‟s critics to the inductivism and subjectivism of Heisenberg thought that, through concepts of the philosophy of language and the support of positivist philosophy advocates, built with other supporters of Copenhagen Interpretation, the hegemonic interpretation of quantum theory. The realistic deductivism of Popper, submitted in the Logic of Scientific Discovery, aim to tackle this position, through a defense of objectivity and realism that pushed the boundaries of epistemology and acquired ethical air. Popper supported the statistical interpretation of quantum theory, a branch of corpuscular interpretation. We will show how the interpretation of the epistemological range opposes these thinkers. To Heisenberg the objectivity must be set apart from the empirical realization of the Principle of Uncertainty. The scientific method, according to the German physicist, must limit the concepts of classical language and apply them in the quantum phenomena descriptions according to the operational limitations of concepts. According to Popper, the methodology exempts linguistic questions and perceives the scientific method as grounded on testability, which imposes that the epistemological analysis has to be made only after the theory has been conjectured. We will investigate from the thought of Popper and we will see how his defense of falseacionism imposes an interpretation of the quantum theory different from those preconized by Heisenberg.

On quantum systems and the measurement problem

Boulle, Nicolas January 2023 (has links)
We focus on the Tensor Product Structure (TPS) of the Hilbert space and the fact that a choice in the TPS has an impact on the representation of the studied quantum system. We define the measurement problem in quantum mechanics and present some theories about quantum mechanics, each of them highlighting a different approach to quantum measurements. Then, a new approach to quantum measurement is presented by considering it as a change in the Tensor Product Structure of the Hilbert space associated with the description of a system. The system is made of a physical quantum system entangled with a measurement device. The description of the system changes to a new one where there is no entanglement anymore between the physical system and the measurement apparatus. The change in the TPS is performed using a global unitary transformation and more precisely by diagonalizing the density matrix of the system using unitary matrices. Four sets of matrices are obtained, each of them diagonalizing the density matrix in a different way for our toy model made of 2 qubits. Then, we want to recover Born’s rule directly from the diagonalizing matrices by measuring the size of their sets using Haar measure. We have not been able to conclude this program, but we outline what is expected to happen such that standard probabilities can be recovered.

A Current Need for Continuity

Svensson, Nils Patrik January 2022 (has links)
Throughout these last few decades, phenomenology and modern physics have slowly started to approach each other in order to bridge the gap between the subjective and objective. In this thesis I aim to show an approach done with the help of Karen Barad's agential realism; a quantum interpretation enabling us to better understand and analyse our complex world, as well as our perception of it.Taking inspiration from new materialism, phenomenology and physics, I see a need to properly leave discrete dualism behind, in order to be able to describe cultural and material structures as continuous manifolds. Instead of endlessly searching for their binary and changeless parts.

The Collapse of Decoherence : Can Decoherence Theory Solve The Problems of Measurement?

Herlin, Karl January 2023 (has links)
In this review study, we ask ourselves if decoherence theory can solve the problems of measurement in quantum mechanics. After an introduction to decoherence theory, we present the problem of preferred basis, the problem of non-observability of interference and the problem of definite outcomes. We present Zurek's theory of environment induced superselection rules and find that the problem of preferred basis and the problem of non-observability of interference can be solved through decoherence theory, but not the problem of outcomes, if we accept the eigenstate-eigenvalue link and the Born statistical interpretation. We reveal that these two concepts are essential in the Copenhagen interpretations of quantum mechanics, and give an account for von Neumann's and Wigner's conscious collapse interpretation as well as a detailed description of Bohr's and Heisenberg's interpretation. We discuss how Bohr's and Heisenberg's interpretation relates to decoherence with a special emphasis on the irreducibility of classical concepts as interpreted by Don Howard. During the discussion, we critique Wigner's use of the word "consciousness" as opposed to von Neumann's use, as well as Howard's decisively ontological approach to Bohr through an antithetical Kantian approach. We conclude by stating that decoherence theory cannot decisively solve the problem of definite outcomes of quantum mechanics, even when considering it in relation to the Copenhagen interpretation.
