Optical Properties of Silica-Copper Oxide Thin Films Prepared by Spin Coating

Mårtensson, Niklas January 2011 (has links)
Optical properties of copper oxide nanoparticles in a silica matrix thin film have been investigated. Films were prepared on Si substrates from a sol-gel by spin coating. Four samples with different thicknesses, from 14,5-109 nm, were fabricated. Optical properties were measured with Variable Angle Spectroscopic Ellipsometry. The aim of the project was to gain further understanding of these films that are interesting in applications for solar absorbers as solar selective coatings. Ellipsometricangles Ψ and Δ were measured in the wavelength range from 250-1700 nm. A dispersion model was developed and fitted to experimental data with acceptable results.

Gas-phase conversion of glycerol to acetol over copper-based catalysts: Structural, morphological and textural effect on catalytic performance

Tiago Pinheiro Braga 14 December 2012 (has links)
Glycerol is a waste by-product obtained throughout the production of biodiesel by transesterification of vegetable oils. The glycerine prices are falling due to its lack of market. This change in market has attracted much interest in development of research related to the transformation of glycerol by catalytic processes. Thus, polymeric precursor method and wet impregnation route were applied to synthesize copper and aluminum-based catalyst in order to convert glycerol into acetol. The thesis is divided into 4 parts. The first part was studied the influence of copper content and the effect of component used as support in the catalytic performance. In the second part, it was observed the effect of the preparation method in structural, textural and morphological properties and consequently in the catalytic activity. In the third and fourth part, it was investigated how the acid-base properties affect in the catalytic performance during the transformation of glycerol. The samples were characterized by different techniques ICP-OES, TGA, DTA, XRD, SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms and microcalorimetry of NH3 and CO2 adsorption. It was note that the glycerol conversion and the acetol selectivity increased with the Cu loading and with the improvement of the specific surface area. The results confirmed that the way of catalyst preparation influences its structure, texture, morphology and subsequently the catalytic performance. It was also observed that acidic or basic sites alone play a secondary role in the reaction; however, copper-based catalysts showed that copper metal provides an active site for the transformation of glycerol. Nevertheless, copper metal sites combined with an acid or base site can play a major role in the activity, selectivity and stability of samples. Furthermore, it is observed by XRD of the spent catalysts that the presence of the copper-modified alumina decreases catalyst sintering and consequently improve the catalytic proprieties.

Développement de la technique dépôt par couche atomique spatiale (SALD) pour la fabrication de couches minces type P d'oxyde de cuivre (I) conductrices / Development of the Spatial Atomic Layer Deposition (SALD) technique for the fabrication of p-type thin films of highly conductive copper (I) oxide

To successfully design the instrumentation needed for new manufacturing technologies with nanoscale precision, the design methodology must take into account many different topics related to chemistry, physics, mechanics, electronics and automation, working together to achieve the desired goal. In this thesis, this design methodology has been implemented with a large number of tools and approaches to successfully optimize a nanofabrication method called spatial atomic layer deposition (SALD) in order to deposit thin films. a potentially useful material as a component of non-silicon solar energy devices, photoelectrochemical water separators and transparent thin-film electronic components, among others: cuprous oxide (Cu2O).With respect to manufacturing technology and mechatronics design, SALD is a promising manufacturing technique that enables the fabrication of thin films with nanoscale precision and the ability to control their mechanical, electrical and crystallographic properties. In addition, the SALD approach used in this thesis and in the Laboratoire des Matèriaux et du Génie Physique(LMGP) works in the open air (without a repository) and is therefore potentially an industry-compatible approach to film Thin homogeneous high-area manufacturing with high throughput. In addition, SALD can be used under conditions that make it compatible with flexible substrates and roll-to-roll approaches (R2R). Finally, SALD offers flexibility on the deposit process so that it can be adjusted to obtain different properties on films manufactured with a minimum of instrumentation modification.Using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulations, the fluid mechanics phenomena that occur during the deposition process in the SALD system were analyzed for different reactor configurations. The influence on the properties of the film was studied and a validation with experimental deposits was carried out. Then, using the knowledge and guidance obtained with CFD simulations, and to reduce the cost and complexity of modifying certain mechanical components of the system, a workflow that includes computer-aided design (CAD) and manufacturing additive (also called 3D printing) printing) was set up at the LMGP for the manufacture of one of the main components of the LMGP SALD system: the deposit head. Here, it is the first time that such an innovative manufacturing technique has been applied to thin-film nanofabrication processes, offering many potential applications in the field. In this thesis, such a workflow is presented and explained, along with learned guidelines and discovered limitations also presented. Finally, thin layers of Cu2O have been successfully deposited with the SALD method. Cu2O is one of the few materials with promising electronic properties as a p-type transparent semiconductor. Here, Cu2O films made using the LMGP SALD system are reported and their p-type conductivity and crystallography are analyzed. The results of this work provide initial guidance for the industrial design of a high throughput manufacturing system based on SALD technology optimized for each desired material. This design approach also makes this work useful for increasing the amount of SALD compatible materials, as well as for further developing the SALD methodology in innovative materials and device manufacturing processes.

Elkaseh, Akram Abdulsalam 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / Dissertation presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Engineering at the University of Stellenbosch / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Planar weak link structures, such as micro-bridges, variable thickness bridges and nanobridges, have always attracted a lot of attention. Their potential to behave as real Josephson elements make them useful devices, with numerous applications. Powerful techniques, such as focused ion-beam and electron-beam lithography, were successfully used and are well understood in planar weak link structure fabrication. In this dissertation the results of an experimental study on planar weak link structures are presented. For the first time these structures have been successfully fabricated using AFM nanolithography on hard high-temperature superconducting YBCO tracks, where diamond coated silicon tips were used as a ploughing tool. Superconducting YBCO thin films were deposited on different substrates, using inverted cylindrical magnetron sputtering. The films were used to fabricate micro-bridges, variable thickness bridges and nano-bridges, by using conventional photolithography, argon ion-beam milling and AFM nanolithography. The measured I-V characteristics of the fabricated micro-bridges (width down to 1.9 µm), variable thickness bridges (thickness down to 15 nm) and nano-bridge (width down to 490 nm) showed well defined DC and AC Josephson effect characteristics. For better understanding of the behaviour of these types of weak links, critical current versus temperature measurements, and magnetic field modulation of the critical current measurements, were also performed, with the results and discussions given inside the chapters. The major challenges that were experienced in the laboratory during the fabrication processes and the operation of the fabricated devices are also discussed, with the solutions given where appropriate. Development Of High Fill Factor And High Performance Uncooled Infrared Detector Pixels

Kucuk, Seniz Esra 01 September 2011 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis presents the design, fabrication and characterization of high performance and high fill factor surface micromachined uncooled infrared resistive microbolometer detectors which can be used in large format focal plane arrays (FPAs). The detector pixels, which have a pixel pitch of 25 &mu / m, are designed and fabricated as two-level structures using the enhanced sandwich type resistor while the active material is selected as Yttrium Barium Copper Oxide (YBCO). First level of the pixel structure is allocated for the formation of the support arms in order to obtain longer support arms hence lower thermal conductance values to get the desired high performance levels. The pixel body is built in the second level such that the fill factor and absorption of the detector is maximized. Structural and sacrificial layer thicknesses are also optimized in order to increase the absorption coefficient of the pixel in the 8-12 &mu / m wavelength range. The thermal simulations are conducted using finite element method (FEM) by CoventorWare software. The designed pixel has a fill factor of 92 % together with the thermal conductance and thermal time constant values calculated as 16.8 nW/K and 19.3 ms in the simulations, respectively. The pixels are fabricated at METU MEMS facilities after the design of a CMOS compatible process flow. All process steps are optimized individually to obtain the expected high performance. Characterization step of the pixels includes the measurements of temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR), noise and thermal conductance value together with the thermal time constant. Effective TCR of the pixel is measured as -2.81 %/K for a pixel with a support arm resistance of 8 k&Omega / and total resistance of 55 k&Omega / . The corner frequency of 1/f noise in the pixel is 9.5 kHz and 1.4 kHz under 20 &mu / A and 10 &mu / A current bias, respectively. The total rms noise is 192 pA within 8.4 kHz bandwidth for a current bias of 20 &mu / A. Thermal conductance, Gth, of the pixel is measured as 17.4 nW/K with a time constant of 17.5 ms. The measurement results indicate that the single pixels designed and fabricated in the scope of this thesis are applicable to large format FPAs in order to obtain a high performance imager. The expected NETD values are 33 mK and 36 mK for 384x288 and 640x480 format FPAs, respectively.

Παραγωγή υδρογόνου μέσω αναμόρφωσης της μεθανόλης με οξειδικούς καταλύτες χαλκού / Hydrogen production via methanol steam reforming over copper oxide-catalysts

Παπαβασιλείου, Ιωάννα 07 July 2009 (has links)
The scope of the present thesis was the development of an effective catalytic copper-based system for methanol reforming. The catalytic properties of three different copper-based systems prepared via the non conventional combustion method, were investigated for the aforementioned process: CuO-CeO2, modified CuO-CeO2 and Cu-Mn-O, as well as the optimal CuO-CeO2 and Cu-Mn-O oxide cata¬lysts supported on Al metal foam. The physicochemical characteristics of CuO-CeO2 catalysts were found to be influenced by the parameters of the synthesis. The optimal catalyst was prepared with Cu/(Cu+Ce) ratio equal to 0.15. In the case of modified CuO-CeO2 catalysts, at least part of dopant cations gets incorporated into the CeO2 lattice leading to solid solution formation. As a result, the physicochemical characteris¬tics of the samples were influenced, as well as their catalytic performance. Cu-Mn spinel oxide catalysts were found to be highly active despite their low surface area. Their activity is comparable to that of commercial Cu-Zn-Al catalysts. The optimal catalyst was prepared with a Cu/(Cu+Mn) ratio equal to 0.30. Structured Cu-Ce/Al foam and Cu-Mn/Al foam catalysts prepared via in situ combustion method were equally effective for hydrogen production via methanol reforming. Based on the findings of an isotopic study, a mechanism has been proposed for the reforming reaction over Cu-Mn-O, where methyl formate is formed as a reaction intermediate. An additional reaction mechanism is taking place over Cu-Ce-O and commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalysts, resulting in the intermediate dioxomethylene.
