Utilitarian ceramics in the Byzantine Peloponnese (8th - 13th century) : the economics of the ceramics and ceramic production in the context of economic cycles

Valente, Rossana January 2018 (has links)
Utilitarian unglazed ceramics constitute an important range of evidence for investigating cultural and economic identities. The present research project analyses commonly used, unglazed Byzantine vessels from stratified contexts, excavated in Ancient Corinth (ASCSA), in close comparison with vessels from Sparta and Argos (Peloponnese - Greece). The first goal of this thesis is to provide an updated overview of the specific types of unglazed, utilitarian vessels used in these sites. Through a quantitative analysis, applied to ceramics, this study presents a seriation of specific types of unglazed utilitarian vessels from the Byzantine Period (8th - 13th centuries), which suggests a revised chronology of use for these vessels. Furthermore, this study also provides an analysis of how vessels changed shape and fabric over time and how Byzantine history and related domestic environments influenced the quantity and quality of utilitarian objects. Quantitative studies of unglazed pottery, based upon type and fabric, can produce relevant information for delineating technological, economic and social patterns on a local and a regional scale. Quantifying the presence and the percentage of unglazed pottery types in relation to their contexts makes it possible to identify technological, economic and cultural networks in which those pots were produced, used, reused and discarded. The production of coarse and cooking wares in the 8th century inherited a Late Roman artisanal tradition. Additionally, these wares are also characterized by a changed scale of production and by transformed manufacturing practices, which are further developed in the Byzantine period and cease only some decades after the Frankish conquest of the Peloponnese. Diverse utilitarian vessels were part of a typological koine in the Byzantine period; the same types have been found in stratified deposits excavated in different sites across the Peloponnese and beyond. The appearance of these vessels may be used, primarily, to suggest date ranges and to denote regional and interregional trade. Furthermore, such typological consistency is evidence for connectivity and for exchange, which encompasses not only the exchange of goods, but also of technical know-how. The same types of wares were possibly produced simultaneously in distant sites. For instance, there are striking similarities between the Early and Middle Byzantine coarse and cooking wares produced in Corinth and those produced in Salento (Southern Apulia, Italy). Due to these similarities, utilitarian unglazed wares may be studied as a proxy for patterns of social, cultural and economic networks of exchange in the Byzantine period between these two regions. Finally, this study would like to investigate how the presence or absence, the frequency and the relative proportions of pottery types are determined by socio-economic factors. An analysis of the manufactory tradition, including variations in technology of production and of vessel morphologies, within the appropriate historical context, can be indicative of social and economic patterns. Pottery can demonstrate the components of effective demand and can, therefore, be an important tool for measuring patterns of production and consumption in relation to economic trends. This project tests diverse research methodologies in order to analyse how ceramics, set within a wide and multifocal range of historical and archaeological sources, can be informative of economic patterns and changes.

This work deals with the gravitative submarine mass movements in the seismically active graben; the Gulf of Corinth. The main objective of this work is to create a detailed map of the submarine mass movements of the Gulf of Corinth based on seismic data. The seismic data, consisting of side scan sonar and subbottom profiling records, was collected in 1983 in the framework of a research cruise of the research vessel Discovery. The interpretation of the seismic data was based on certain acoustic criteria and the results were processed with GIS software led to the construction of a classified map. This paper tries to demonstrate the frequency of display, the geological distribution and the type of mass movements, based on the collected seismic data.

Σταυροπούλου, Μαυρέτα 28 February 2013 (has links)
Sea is one of the key elements of global economic growth and also one of the most important environmental assets. Marine pollution and the consequent degradation of coastal areas are two major environmental problems our planet is facing. Oil hydrocarbons are some of the most important pollutants worldwide, due to their toxicity, as well as their major environmental consequences. The objective of this study was to determine the dispersion of petroleum contaminants in the Gulf of Corinth. The Gulf of Corinth is an enclosed sea between the Ionian Sea and the Corinth Canal and is also considered to be a very important wildlife habitat. Sampling took place along the main southern part of the Gulf, to investigate the spread of oil hydrocarbons along the coast area with the use of flexible indicators.

The Problem of Factions Versus Essential Unity in the Church of Corinth: A Study of Causative Factors and Paul's Answer to the Problem

Luthy, Fred H. 20 July 1961 (has links)
I have long been interested in Paul's writings, his various doctrinal viewpoints, and the manner in which he dealt with problems as they developed during his ministry. Certainly, the Corinthian Churoh had its problems, and they were eerious problems. Not the least of these was the matter of a faotious spirit whioh seemed to prevail among the members and whioh was keeping the oongregation from full effectiveness in its witness and work for Jesus Christ. What were the background oonditions out of whioh this Corinthian Churoh oame forth? What types of people comprised this congregation? How and why did these various problems develop? What did Paul do to meet the need? What was his answer to the problems? What does all of this say to us today? These are but a few of the questions with which I am concerned and with whioh I shall deal in this study.

Paul's approach to the cultural conflict in Corinth : a socio-historical study / Johannes Mattheus Wessels

Wessels, Johannes Mattheus January 2006 (has links)
This dissertation aims at studying underlying cultural conflicts in Corinth and Paul's approach thereto. Firstly, the cultural underlays in the congregation of Corinth are revisited, with special reference to the presence of Greeks, Romans and Jews in the congregation which came into being there. This theme is explored by studying the meaning of culture, the archaeological data, as well as Biblical data and other historical data regarding these cultures and Corinth. Furthermore attention is given to the way in which these three cultures were reflected in Paul's own background. In conclusion Paul's approach to the conflict is delineated in terms of positive and negative renderings of the concept "becoming a slave to fellow humans". Special focus is given to 1 Corinthians 9:19-23 as a key pericope in this regard. The deduction made in this dissertation is that Paul disregards his own cultural heritage and makes himself a slave to people on behalf of winning people for Christ, without allowing people (or cultural groups) to rule him as masters. / Thesis (M.Th.
