Tectonic, stratigraphic and geomorphic interactions, and mobile evaporite influence, in rift basins

Duffy, Oliver January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines how the growth, interaction and linkage of normal faults, and the broader structural styles within rift basins, provide first-order controls upon syn-rift sediment routing and the development of coeval syn-rift stratigraphy. To achieve this, this thesis integrates observations from an area of active extension, alongside the stratigraphic record of an ancient rift basin. The former allows greater insight into sediment erosion, transport and preservation processes during rifting, whereas the latter represents the net depositional history, hence permitting a reconstruction of rift tectono-stratigraphic evolution. Recent advances in the understanding of landscape response to active faulting, have focused predominantly on large-scale rift provinces or where fault segments are widely-spaced across-strike (~15-30 km). As such, the neotectonic portion of this study integrates field and digitial terrain analysis to examine the geomorphic response to active faulting across the Perachora Peninsula (Gulf of Corinth, Central Greece), an uplifting, faulted-terrace setting. Here, the across-strike fault-spacing is small (~2-3 km), allowing fault segments to interact across-strike, and landscape evolution to be driven by a complex configuration of perched, intermittent and marine base-levels. These base-levels have a propensity to switch, with implications for sediment-routing and hanging-wall stratigraphic development. The preservation potential of sub-aerial syn-rift landscapes and basin-fill is extremely low in settings such as Perachora, due to the aggressive headward cannibalisation driven by ongoing tectonic uplift and short downstream distances to terminal base level. The subsurface stratigraphic study examines the Triassic-Jurassic syn-rift stratigraphy of the Danish Central Graben, an area displaying lateral variability in the original thickness and mobility of Late Permian Zechstein evaporites along-strike of the bounding Coffee-Soil Fault System. This setting enables a direct comparison between evaporite-influenced and non- evaporite-influenced rifting at a range of scales. By integrating observations of variability in structural style, with a systematic seismic-stratigraphic analysis of the syn-rift interval, the study documents how interactions between normal fault evolution and mobile evaporites influence: i) the variability in rift basin structural style; ii) the development of stratal geometries; and iii) the nature and location of depositional systems. On a basin-wide scale, the evaporite-influenced rift portions display more prominent fault-related and evaporite-related folding, which in turn controls syn-rift deposition, along with variable degrees of decoupling of basement and cover fault and fold systems. Focusing on the evaporite-influenced Coffee-Soil Fault System, variations in the locations and rates of accommodation generated by both load-driven withdrawal of evaporites up the hanging-wall dip-slope, and fault-related subsidence, provide a critical, and hitherto neglected control upon dip- and strike-oriented variability in hanging-wall stratigraphic architecture. Conceptual models for the development of hanging-wall stratigraphy, incorporating the influence of sediment supply rates upon load-induced evaporite mobilisation, provide a framework which may be used in the analysis of evaporite-influenced border fault systems worldwide. Overall, the findings of this thesis have implications for understanding the controls on spatial and temporal variability in structural style, sediment routing and syn-rift stratigraphic evolution in rift basins. In particular, the study highlights that to determine a deeper understanding of the interactions which determine the evolution of syn-rift stratigraphy, it is essential to examine basin processes in both modern and ancient rift settings, as well as at a range of scales.

For this, we review a few discussions about exegetical text. The Christian movement emerged as a Jewish sect, but matured in the Greco-Roman environment, being deeply affected by Western culture and traditions. On the one hand, suffered the influences of ancient Israelite traditions and Judaism of the Second Temple, and on the other, suffered the influences of Greco-Roman traditions, although to a lesser degree. Thus, this research shows that the prophecy and glossolalia in 1st Corinthians are ecstatic phenomena, in which context is the nearest Jewish apocalyptic mysticism.

J.-C. / Research on Corinthian trade in the Aegean Sea and Eastern Mediterranean between the 9th century and the middle of the 6th century BC.

Vallet, Xavier 19 November 2016 (has links)
L’étude par type de forme permet enfin de suivre l’évolution des goûts et des marchés durant toute la période archaïque / The aim of the research project is to better understand Corinthian trade in the Greek and the Eastern Mediterranean world through the analysis of its exports volume and the local and temporal variations while trying at the same time to clarify its economic, political or social mechanisms. This study is mainly based on the figured Corinthian pottery that spread during most of the Archaic Age from the 9th to the 6th century BC. The geometric pottery (non-figured) and the amphora are also used in the analysis as much as possible, to sharpen our study, as well as other exportation products less important in terms of quantities such as bronze horses. The whole of the exports is studied with the imports which were far fewer in order to put the Corinthian trade into the larger setting of the Greek and Mediterranean trade and to have a better understanding of the nature of the economic relations binding Corinth to its trading partners. A comparison with a wider corpus of documents enables us to put the study into perspective and to reinforce the broad features of the Corinthian trade in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Every big stage of this trade (Geometric, Protocorinthian, Corinthian) is subdivided into thirteen periods allowing us to follow the economic activities along thirteen generations of men. Finally, the study of each type of shapes enables us to follow the evolution of tastes and markets during the whole Archaic Age

The aim of this dissertation is to understand how the sanctuary of Demeter and Kore situated at the ásty of the polis of Corinth was set in the Archaic (8th – 6th BC.) and Classical (5th – 4th BC.). Periods as an anthropological place, namely, an identitarian, historic and relational space. We believe that in that site the Corinthian women could build and reinforce their position as citizens through religious practices. The Cypselid tirany pursued to beneficiate popular cults like the one of Demeter and Kore at the same time it searched for ways to inhibit the aristocratic influence. However, we see that the harmony between the feminine groups of the city was not complete since the high cost votive offers marked the social contrast among the well-off ones and the ones that belonged to the humble stratum. The banquets that occurred at the sanctuary reflect the belongingness of the corinthian women to the social and civic body through a “religious citizenship”. We understand yet that architectonic transformations that the site was exposed to are materializations of the history and politic events of Greece as a whole and of Corinth in particular. In that religious space the women made public the domestic sphere and its activities, rupturing the frontiers between public and private spaces in a way that reserved, renewed and reinforced the values that prevailed at the polis.

Misie apoštola Pavla v Korintu v dějinném kontextu / The Mission of the Apostle Paul in Corinth in its Historical Context

Smékalová, Miroslava January 2014 (has links)
"The Mission of the Apostle Paul in Corinth and Its Historical Background". This thesis aims to present the figure of the Apostle Paul on the basis of biblical and historical reports are available. It describes his life, conversion and preaching Christianity on his mission trips, especially in Corinth. It deals with the life of people at the time and the arrangement of the ancient society. In particular, attention is focused on the historical aspect but also related missionary activities in Corinth. It pays attention to the context of his relationship to Judaism and other pagan cultures. Also included is a clear theological analysis of his letters to Corinth. The work is complemented by maps, archeological excavations from Corinth, showing the layout of the city and dwelling, where early Christians gathered. Attention is also paid to the Christian community in Corinth and everyday problems solved in the letters of the Apostle Paul.

Social Problems of First Century A.D. Christians Studied in the Context of Corinth

Christie, James Lloyd 08 1900 (has links)
Corinth is chosen as the setting for this thesis since the Pauline Corinthian letters yield much first hand information concerning the problems the new Christians were facing. A general description of the history, social atmosphere, and architecture of Corinth is given in order to establish a background in which the study can be made. Two specific problems are addressed. First, that of "Porneia" ("Sexual immorality.") A definite prohibition against all extra-marital sexual intercourse causes the Christians to identify marriage as a necessity for those desirous or in need of sexual fulfilment. This is in contrast with the Greco-Roman attitude towards marriage, namely that it provided only one of several possibilities for sexual fulfilment, and was primarily for the purpose of child-bearing. The second problem addressed is that of eating "eidolothuta" ("meats offered to idols.") Paul distinguishes between circumstances when specific practices of pagan worship are present, and when they are not present. In the former.situation, the Christians were not to eat; in the latter, they were permitted to eat. For the Christians to comply with St. Paul's instructions concerning each of the two named problems, it meant limiting their social activities in various ways. The result may have been restricted social, political, and financial prosperity, as-well as eventual hatred and abuse by their contemporaries. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Paul and Sacrifice in Corinth: Rethinking Paul's Views on Gentile Cults in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10

Sanfridson, Martin January 2022 (has links)
This thesis argues that (1) Paul’s instructions in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 are coherent and consistent, and (2) that the apostle’s instructions does not express his departure from Judaism. For many years, scholars working on 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 have struggled to explain how these two chapters are connected and what Paul’s instructions within the two chapters are. I present a new reading of 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 where I argue that these chapters are connected in a coherent way and that Paul deals with two separate, yet connected, contexts in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10. In 1 Corinthians 8, he instructs the Corinthian Christ followers that they can take part in the dinners that often followed an animal sacrifice in antiquity, as long as it does not present an issue to another Christ followers. The key reason for this is the social capital at stake, would they not partake in these dinners. In 1 Corinthians 10, Paul tells the Christ followers that they cannot participate at the altar when animals are sacrificed. Doing so would be a violation against their exclusive relationship with the god of Israel and Jesus Christ. Many have read 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 as evidence for Paul’s departure from Judaism. I push back against this understanding by placing Paul’s instructions in the wider web of Jewish literature from the Second Temple period and the early rabbinic period. By comparing Paul’s instructions in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 to texts from these time periods, it becomes clear that Paul is part of an ongoing Jewish conversation about how someone could remain faithful to the god of Israel while living in a gentile society. / Thesis / Candidate in Philosophy / In this thesis, I examine Paul’s instructions regarding various level of engagement in gentile cults in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10. My thesis contributes to a new reading of these two chapters and I argue that 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 deal with two distinct, yet connected, issues. In the former chapter, Paul instructs Christ followers on how they should act when dining in temples dedicated to idols (something he in principle allows); in the latter, he instructs them to avoid all participation at the altar where the sacrifice takes place. By recognizing these two different contexts, Paul’s instructions in 1 Corinthians 8 and 10 become more understandable, coherent, and consistent. In addition, I argue that Paul’s instructions should be read within the wider context of Second Temple Judaism and early rabbinic Judaism, and not as evidence that Paul left Judaism.
