Překladová čeština a její charakteristiky / Translated Czech and Its CharacteristicsChlumská, Lucie January 2015 (has links)
Title: Translated Czech and Its Characteristics Author: Mgr. Lucie Chlumská Department: Institute of the Czech National Corpus Supervisor: doc. Mgr. Václav Cvrček, Ph.D. Abstract: Despite the fact that translated literature accounts for more than one third of all written publications in the Czech Republic, Czech in translations has not yet been systematically analyzed from a quantitative point of view. The main objective of this corpus-based dissertation is to identify characteristic features of translated Czech com- pared to Czech in original, i.e. non-translated texts. The analysis was based on a large monolingual comparable corpus Jerome, created for the purposes of this study. It inclu- des both fiction and non-fiction texts and its design reflects the real Czech situation regarding the translations' source languages, i.e. translations from English prevail. The research was inspired by the theory of translation universals (typical linguistic featu- res common to any translated text) and focused mainly on simplification, convergence and general frequency characteristics, including parts-of-speech distribution and n-gram analysis. The findings have supported the hypothesis that translated Czech, as reflected in the Jerome corpus, is different from the non-translated Czech in terms of higher degree of...

Meggers e Gregory Rabassa. / In this study, we investigated the translation of cultural markers present in two works written by JoãoUbaldo Ribeiro: Sargento Getúlio, translated by the self-translator as Sergeant Getulio; and the other, O sorriso do lagarto, by Clifford Landers as The Lizard’s Smile. The choices of the self-translator and the professional translator were analysed, in the respective target texts, concerning cultural differences related to cultural markers in order to observe similarities and diferences in both pairs of texts. We also investigated features of explicitation and simplification found in the respective translated texts. The theoretical approach is based on Corpus-Based Translation Studies (Baker, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004); Corpus Linguistics (Berber Sardinha, 2004), Camargo’s interdisciplinary proposal (2005, 2007), studies on cultural domains (Nida, 1945; Aubert, 1981, 2006), and on translation modalities (Aubert, 1984, 1998). For word extraction, we used the tools provided by the WordSmith Tools program, version 4.0, which enable us to analyse data in a broader and more dynamic way. The results obtained suggest that João Ubaldo Ribeiro’s output shows patterns more likely to be consciously reproduced on the basis of the source text. On the other hand, Landers seems to be closer to the normal patterning of translated English, in an attempt to make the translated text easier for the target reader. Esta pesquisa é parte de um projeto maior, o PETra – Padrões de Estilo de Tradutores, coordenado pela Profa. Dra. Os resultados encontrados nesta pesquisa mostram que a tradutora Irene Matthews tende a usar estratégias que podem ser identificadas como características de normalização / This thesis aims at analyzing the translation of words considered recurring and preferred in the novel As mulheres de Tijucopapo, by Marilene Felinto, as well as observing possible tendencies of normalization by the translator Irene Matthews in the translation to English: The women of Tijucopapo. This research is part of a bigger project, the PETra (Padrões de Estilo de Tradutores), coordinated by Doc. Diva Cardoso de Camargo. The methodology employed is that of corpus-based translation studies (proposed by Baker, 1993, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2004; Scott‘s study concerning normalization, 1998; and Camargo‘s research studies, 2005, 2007), and that of corpus linguistics (Berber Sardinha‘s study, 2003, 2004). We also base our study on Felinto‘s critical heritage (studies by Araújo, 2006; Bailey, 2010; Fiorucci, 2009; Gonçalves, 2001; Jacomel, 2008; Santos, 2005; Schmidt, 2009; Vieira, 2001; Wanderley, 2009, and Xavier, 2003). The research was carried out by means of a combination of semi- manual and computerized analyses. Initially, we used the computer software WordSmith Tools to obtain the frequency of the words in Felinto‘s book. Then, we went on to use the tool KeyWords to identify which would be the keywords in the author‘s novel. After collecting these data, we used Felinto‘s critical heritage in order to select five words that could be considered as recurring and preferred in Felinto‘s writing: 'homem‘ ('man‟), 'mulheres‘ ('women)‘, 'chuva‘ ('rain‘), 'amor‘ ('love‘) and 'égua‘ ('mare‘). Based on Scott (1998), we analyzed the translation of the five selected words in relation to nine normalization features. The results obtained in this study show that the translator Irene Matthews tends to use strategies that may be identified as features of normalization

Translating conceptual metaphor in Mandela's Long walk to freedom : a cross-cultural comparisonNokele, Amanda Blossom Bulelwa January 2015 (has links)
Since the publication of the seminal work by Lakoff and Johnson (1980a), Metaphors we live by, countless research has been done on metaphor. This research was conducted because, in the past, metaphor was considered a deviant and poetic device that could be used only by those who were skilful. These scholars offered another view: metaphor is a matter of thought. They showed that linguistic metaphor is the manifestation of conceptual metaphors that are in our subconscious mind and are found in every day language. In other words, metaphors are a revelation of how we think. Linguists and translation scholars claim that it is a challenge to translate metaphor. The main objective of this study is to determine how conceptual metaphor theory can contribute towards the development of translation in African languages. The study seeks to identify conceptual metaphors in Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, which was written in English, and then analyse how these were translated into isiXhosa and isiZulu. This implies that this study involves a corpus. In identifying metaphors from the source text a Metaphor Identification Procedure Vrije Universiteit (MIPVU), which was conceived by Steen and his colleagues at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, was used (Steen et al 2010). ParaConc concordancer was used to investigate and compare how the metaphors were translated. The results showed that most metaphors were translated the same way in isiXhosa and isiZulu, which implies that the translators conceptualised the metaphors in the same way. These results revealed that the translators’ styles were similar. This confirms the fact that the two languages are related. As scholars in earlier research indicated, metaphors in translation pose a problem, yet the translators of Mandela’s book successfully met this challenge. They were able to render the metaphors in their respective languages in an acceptable manner. They tried to adhere to the style of the source text writer, but traces of their own style are evident in the texts. / Linguistics and Modern Languages

Pragmatika anglických tázacích dovětků v překladu / The Pragmatics of English Tag Questions in TranslationUrešová, Miroslava January 2012 (has links)
This thesis explores the pragmatics of English tag questions in translation by analyzing their pragmatic function. Our approach is based on the theoretical assumption that Czech lacks straightforward linguistic counterparts of English tag questions. The quantitative and qualitative corpus-based research strives to produce interesting findings about possible relations between pragmatic function, polarity and the form of tag questions in English, original Czech and translated Czech texts. Therefore, we propose and verify several hypotheses about these relations. This thesis broadens theoretical knowledge about tag questions by contributing to research on translation universals and improves translation practice by presenting translators with a paradigm, i.e., a class of possible solutions to the problem of translating English tag questions into Czech.

Estudo em corpora de traduções e três glossários bilíngues nas subáreas de anestesiologia, cardiologia e ortopedia /Paiva, Paula Tavares Pinto. January 2006 (has links)
Abstract: The present study aims at observing the most frequent medical terms in Portuguese and their translation into English from three medical fields, Anesthesiology, Cardiology and Orthopaedics, as well as examining aspects of simplification and explicitation shown in the respective translator's texts from each medical area. The methodology adopted is that of Corpus-based Translation Studies (Baker 1993, 1995, 1996; Camargo, 2004, 2005), Corpus Linguistics (Berber Sardinha, 2000, 2004; Tognini-Bonelli, 2001); and Terminology (Aubert, 1996; Barros, 2004; Krieger & Finatto, 2004). For compiling the main corpus, we used scientific papers from bilingual Brazilian journals and foreign journals well-known in their respective medical fields. This study used three tools: WordList, KeyWords and Concord, from the software WordSmith Tools version 3.0. A comparison of medical terms was carried out based on a parallel corpus of original and translated texts, and on two comparable corpora composed by texts originally written in Portuguese and in English. After listing and analyzing the most frequent medical terms in Portuguese, we compiled a glossary with the respective equivalents in English followed by their contexts in both languages for each of the three medical areas. The observation of simplification and explicitation features revealed strategies used by the three translators when dealing with medical texts. / Mestre

Análise de um corpus de textos de segurança da aviação à luz dos Estudos da Tradução Baseados em Corpus: os termos \'segurança\', \'safety\' e \'security\' / Analysis of a corpus of texts of safety and security in aviation under the view of Corpus-Based Translation Studies: terms segurança, safety and securityCosta, Carlos Eduardo Piazentine 21 June 2017 (has links)
Translation language carries out certain trends and characteristics in its own nature. The present study aims at observing the term segurança in Portuguese and its two main translations into English safety and security in aviation language. The theories and methodologies used are those of Corpus-based Translation Studies (BAKER, 1993, 1995, 1996) and Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2000, 2004; TOGNINI-BONELLI, 2001). The three terms were related and we pointed out their similarities, generalities and peculiarities. For compiling the main corpus we used Brazilian journals in the aviation field (Conexão Sipaer, 2009; Aviation in Focus, 2006). For the comparable corpora, we used aviation texts originally in Portuguese (National Civil Aviation Agency of Brazil; Brazilian Air Force) and texts originally in English (International Civil Aviation Organization). This study used the software WordSmith Tools version 6.0 and the tools WordList, KeyWords and Concord. The tranlated texts showed characteristics of explicitation, simplification and normalisation. The types of corpora we used leaded to a reflection over the characteristics of translation language as well as they allowed us to obtain evidence and relate uses of the analysed terms. The comparable corpora gave out the main fixed and semifixed expressions originated from the simple terms in Portuguese and English which are presented through lists followed by their contexts. The results contribute to a better understanding of the terms in aviation language and are expected to be usefull as evidence to translators and professionals in this field and theme.
