Localization and Coverage in Wireless Ad Hoc NetworksGribben, Jeremy January 2011 (has links)
Localization and coverage are two important and closely related problems in wireless ad hoc networks. Localization aims to determine the physical locations of devices in a network, while coverage determines if a region of interest is sufficiently monitored by devices. Localization systems require a high degree of coverage for correct functioning, while coverage schemes typically require accurate location information. This thesis investigates the relationship between localization and coverage such that new schemes can be devised which integrate approaches found in each of these well studied problems. This work begins with a thorough review of the current literature on the subjects of localization and coverage. The localization scheduling problem is then introduced with the goal to allow as many devices as possible to enter deep sleep states to conserve energy and reduce message overhead, while maintaining sufficient network coverage for high localization accuracy. Initially this sufficient coverage level for localization is simply a minimum connectivity condition. An analytical method is then proposed to estimate the amount of localization error within a certain probability based on the theoretical lower bounds of location estimation. Error estimates can then be integrated into location dependent schemes to improve on their robustness to localization error. Location error estimation is then used by an improved scheduling scheme to determine the minimum number of reference devices required for accurate localization. Finally, an optimal coverage preserving sleep scheduling scheme is proposed which is robust to localization error, a condition which is ignored by most existing solutions. Simulation results show that with localization scheduling network lifetimes can be increased by several times and message overhead is reduced while maintaining negligible differences in localization error. Furthermore, results show that the proposed coverage preserving sleep scheduling scheme results in fewer active devices and coverage holes under the presence of localization error.

“The Truth Behind the Headlines”: Media Portrayals and Their Impacts on the Relatives of Sex OffendersVaz, Marshneil January 2015 (has links)
Traditionally, emphases in the mass media coverage of almost all crimes have been placed on the alleged offender and the victim (and on occasion, their families). As a result, the families of offenders have been either largely ignored or presented unfairly even though their lives have also been devastatingly impacted by the media coverage of their loved one.
While scholars have explored the impacts of offending on offenders’ relatives, this exploratory study adds to the literature by focusing on a uniquely marginalized sub-population of relatives of sex offenders in Canada. This study examines some of the collateral consequences of sex offending on the relatives, while focusing primarily on the impacts and effects of media coverage on these relatives. The findings of this study are based on a thematic analysis of nine in-depth semi-structured interviews with partners, mothers and daughters of Canadian adult male sex offenders. Drawing on the theoretical contributions of Herbert Blumer’s (1969) symbolic interactionism and Erving Goffman’s (1963) stigma, this research finds that relatives of sex offenders encounter a myriad of consequences and repercussions resulting from a loved one’s sexually offending behaviour. In particular, the interview data suggests that the media coverage of a loved one’s criminalized behaviour exacerbates many of the already difficult and challenging collateral consequences, as well as the overall stigmatizing effects that arise when a loved one engages in sexually offending behaviour. Recommendations, offered by the participants, regarding future media reporting practices are presented, along with important directions for future research within this area of study.

Economic Leaders Meeting (AELM). Raising APEC interaction to the top track, the level
of leaders, proved to be an effective and powerful dynamic; the AELM continues to meet
annually and to shape APEC policy. The focus on the AELM as the source of vision and
direction reinforces the pivotal importance of this political assemblage, reassures the
populace that leaders do prevail and all is well: essential ingredients, according to Clifford
Geertz, of political theater. The role of journalists, the contemporary scribes or critics, is to
inform the audience of this political drama.
The objective of this research is to demonstrate that real political value exists in the
'Staging of APEC' in terms of effective economic and political integration of benefit to
broad regional interests. The findings draw on the results of a content analysis of news
reports covering the first six years of the AELM (1993-1998). Formally, the AELM is an
opportunity for regional political leaders to engage in regional policy formation outlined by
the pillars of APEC (trade liberalization, facilitation and cooperation) guided by the
principals of open regionalism and concerted unilateralism. Activity on the formal, or main
stage, also flows to the small stage where leaders merge in a neutral venue. On this stage,
leaders are free to examine distinctly non-economic, yet intersecting interests including
domestic agendas, human rights and pluri-lateral security concerns. Together, these dual
stages, neither one complete without the other, form the political theatre of APEC and

Game theory can work as a coordination mechanism in multi-agent robotic systems by representing each robot as a player in a game. In ideal scenarios, game theory algorithms guarantee convergence to optimal configurations and have been widely studied for many applications. However, most of the studies focus on theoretical analysis and lack the details of complete demonstrations. In this regard, we implemented a real-time multi-robot system in order to investigate how game-theoretic methods perform in non-idealized settings. An aerial coverage problem was modeled as a potential game, where each aerial vehicle is an independent decision-making player. These players take actions under limited communication, and each is equipped with onboard vision capabilities. Three game-theoretic methods have been modified and implemented to solve this problem. All computations are performed using onboard devices, independent of any ground entity. The performance of the system is analyzed and compared with different tests and configurations

Density Functional Theory Investigations of Metal/Oxide Interfaces and Transition Metal CatalystsPaulami Majumdar (5930021) 14 January 2021 (has links)
One of the most important advances in modern theoretical surface science and catalysis research has been the advent of Ab-Initio Density Functional Theory (DFT). Based on the electronic structure formulation of Pierre Hohenberg, Walter Kohn and Lu Jeu Sham, DFT has revolutionized theoretical research in heterogeneous catalysis, electrocatalysis, batteries, as well as homogeneous catalysis using first-principles electronic structure simulations. Combined with statistical mechanics, kinetic theory, and experimental inputs, DFT provides a powerful technique for investigating surface structure, reaction mechanisms, understanding underlying reactivity trends, and using them for rational and predictive design of materials for various catalytic chemistries, including those that can propel us towards a clean energy future – for example water gas shift (WGS), methanol synthesis, oxidation reactions, CO2 electroreduction, among many others. Fueled by advances in supercomputing facilities, numerous early and current DFT studies have been primarily focused on idealized simulations aimed at obtaining qualitative insights into experimental observations. However, as the immense potential of DFT has been unfolding, the demand for closer representation of realistic catalytic situations have rapidly emerged, and with it, the recognition of the need to reduce the disparity between theoretical DFT structures and real catalytic environments. Bridging this ‘materials gap’ necessitates using more rigorous catalyst structures in DFT calculations that can capture realistic experimental geometries, while at the same time, are creatively simplified to be computationally tractable. This thesis is a compilation of several projects on metals and metal/oxide systems that have been undertaken using DFT, in collaboration with experimental colleagues, with the goal of addressing some of the challenges in heterogeneous catalysis, while decreasing the ‘materials gap’ between theory and experiments.<div><br></div><div>The first several chapters of this thesis focus on bifunctional, metal/oxide systems. These systems are quintessential in numerous heterogeneous catalysis applications and have been the subject of extensive study. More interestingly, they sometimes exhibit synergistic enhancement in rates that is greater than the sum of the individual rates on the metal (on an inert support) or on the oxide in isolation. Such bifunctionality often stems from the modified properties at the nanoscale interface between the metal and the oxide and is an active field of research. In particular, while a large body of literature exists that investigates the activity of metals, the role of the support in bifunctional systems is often uncertain and is the subject of investigation of the first few chapters of this thesis. We chose to study WGS on Au as support effects are particularly prominent on this system. The second chapter examines WGS on Au/ZnO, where realistic catalytic environment at the interface is reproduced by analyzing the thermodynamics of surface hydroxylation of the oxide under reaction conditions, and its effect on WGS kinetics is quantified through a microkinetic analysis. This study highlights the importance of considering spectator species which can drastically influence the energetics and kinetics of a reaction at a metal/oxide interface. In addition, fundamental aspects of the effect of surface hydroxyls on the electronic structure at the interface is also discussed.<br></div><div><br></div><div>The third chapter of the thesis builds on this theme and analyzes the effect of systematic perturbation of electronic structure at the interface through substitutional doping of the oxide. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on Au/MgO, a system which has been previously studied in extensive detail in our group and benchmarked through experiments. The effects of a series of dopants of varying electronic valences have been analyzed on a number of properties at the interface – vacancy formation energies, adsorption energies of intermediates, scaling properties, activation energy barriers and so on. Exciting new scaling relationships are identified at this interface, having properties different from that observed on extended surfaces, and are interpreted using an electrostatic model. In the subsequent chapter, we identified Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi relationships for the different steps in the WGS pathway for a series of dopants. Coupled with the scaling relations, these trends were then used in conjunction with a dual-site microkinetic model to perform a volcano analysis for interfacial rates. Our analysis thus builds, for the first time, a rational design paradigm for electronic structure perturbation of the support at a bifunctional interface. The next chapter further investigates support effects, both geometric and electronic, in greater detail for Au supported on a series of oxide supports and discusses accelerated identification of an activity descriptor through a close fusion between computations and experiments.<br></div><div><br></div><div>In addition to interfacial effects of the support, this thesis also briefly examines a more apparent role of the oxide, wherein it influences the geometry of the supported metal. Two different Au-based systems are investigated using surface science approaches in Chapter 6 - the segregation properties of a bimetallic Au/Ir alloy on anatase and wetting behavior of Au-FexOy heterodimers – both of which are representative of the structural evolution of a supported catalyst under reaction conditions. Through our analysis, we show that the oxide directly influences these behaviors of the supported metal.<br></div><div><br></div><div>The next few chapters explore catalysis using metallic systems, focusing on transition metals, an important class of materials in heterogeneous catalysis and constitutes the major body of DFT literature for trend based catalytic analyses. A crucial factor that contributed to the success of such high-throughput screening studies was identification of linear scaling relationships on transition metals, whereby the adsorption energy of complex molecular fragments was linearly related to that of simple atomic adsorbates. However, while these relationships are valid for low adsorbate coverages, at higher, catalytically relevant coverages, deviations from linearity are common, thus presenting a materials gap in volcano analyses. The incorporation of coverage effects, therefore, in scaling relations has been a pressing challenge. This thesis describes a simple means of systematically capturing changes in reaction energies due to coverage effects through a pairwise interaction model, where the changes in adsorption energies are shown to be a direct function of the number of neighbors and interaction parameters determined through DFT. In addition, we also draw a mathematical correspondence between scaling relations at high coverage and that at low coverage and discuss its implications on the existence of linear scaling relations.<br></div><div><br></div><div>In Chapter 8, we discuss collaborative work on Pt based catalysts, an active catalyst for many chemical and electrochemical systems. We explore trends in WGS on bimetallic Pt-M systems and identify an activity descriptor by correlating experimental rates with the binding strength of OH* on model surfaces of bimetallic alloys. In addition, we also investigate the interaction between Na promoter and Pt under reaction conditions, using an inverse oxide model, to obtain insights into the nature of promotion of alkali metals on WGS on Pt catalysts.<br></div>

Předmětem této práce je polohově orientovaná analýza v kontextu optimalizace mobilních sítí. Popisuje nástroj pro odhadování základních parametrů sítě na místech s neznámými parametry sítě na základě databáze RTR NetTest. Je zde stručně představena oblast velkých dat, strojového učení a shrnutí o konceptu a funkcionalitě aplikace NetTest. Práce ukazuje a porovnává skupinu regresních metod na základě jejich komplexnosti a vhodnosti pro vytvoření map odhadovaných parametrů sítě. Po jejich důkladné 1D analýze je IDW a GPR analyzováno ve 2D a využito pro vytvoření skupiny map odhadu parametrů sítě. Je posouzena i jejich přesnost na základě referenčního měření aplikací NetTest.

Esta investigación analiza la cobertura periodística sobre hípica del diario “El Comercio” en los años 30, cuando el contexto político peruano era protagonizado por el tercer militarismo. La historia peruana toma un giro en esta época donde el militarismo hacía un pacto con la oligarquía para permanecer en el poder indirectamente. Las revisiones de textos periodísticos comprueban que el hipódromo, más que ser un centro deportivo, era un espacio de reunión social; asimismo, la prensa cubría al personaje más que a la noticia. Para el análisis se realizó revisión bibliográfica, la búsqueda y lectura de archivos periodísticos de aquellos años en el ya mencionado diario que, en aquella época, cubría a la hípica como deporte importante. El objetivo de este trabajo es conocer el uso de recursos periodísticos en aquellos años para señalar el vínculo entre el poder, el Estado y la prensa peruana en ese contexto. / This research analyzes the journalistic coverage on equestrian of the newspaper "El Comercio" in the 1930s, when the Peruvian political context was led by the third militarism. Peruvian history takes a turn in this era where militarism made a pact with the oligarchy to remain in power indirectly. Journalistic text reviews prove that the racecourse rather than being a sports center was a space for social gathering, the press itself covered the character rather than the news. For the analysis, a literature review was carried out, the search and reading of journalistic archives of those years in the before mentioned newspaper that at that time covered horse riding as an important sport. The objective of this work is to know the use of journalistic resources in those years to indicate the link between the power, the state and the Peruvian press. / Tesis

Additional characterizations of current types of health coverage, investment in health and the main health and socio-demographic indicators of the region were made.
