The consequences of the community and police relationships on crime prevention in Tzaneen area of Limpopo Province.

Mokhomole, Tumiso Desmond. January 2015 (has links)
M. Tech. Policing / The White Paper on Safety and Security (1998: 7-8) states that in the new democratic order, South Africans demand and deserve accountable, effective and service oriented policing. This means that policing in a democracy requires professional law enforcement which does not infringe upon human rights. It further requires a concerted effort by government, in partnership with civil society, to prevent crime before it occurs. The new South African Police Services under the new dispensation introduced in 1994 covers new policing programmes such as Community Policing Forum, Sector Policing and Neighborhood Watch, for the purpose of bringing the policing department to the proximity of the society. The main objectives of the research are to investigate the reasons for the failure of the police and the community to maintain cordial relationships on crime prevention in Tzaneen area, reasons for lower success rate in terms of apprehending and arresting of criminals, lack of monitoring by police commissioners of Tzaneen to ensure the quality of relationship, and to recommend ways of ensuring or improving good relationship between the police and the community in fighting or preventing crime in Tzaneen area, Limpopo province.

Community policing as a crime prevention strategy for the Cape Town City Police

Visser, A. J. (Abraham Johannes) 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MPA)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The purpose of the study is to establish if community policing is being implemented by the Cape Town City Police and if so, to what extent. The study further aims to establish whether the full implementation of community policing could be expected to have a positive impact on the reduction of crime in Cape Town. To this end, the reader is presented with a brief overview of local government in South Africa, an in-depth discussion of the transformation process which resulted in the current municipal structures, and an introduction to the non-traditional local government function of crime prevention. Local government's increasing involvement in crime prevention and the resulting establishment of municipal police services are discussed and it is argued that crime prevention strategies of municipal police services should build on existing local government efforts and should therefore focus on removing the root causes of crime. Further to the above, a detailed discussion of community policing is embarked upon. This section provides a theoretical account of what community policing entails, as well as a theoretical framework against which the researcher's empirical study with regard to the implementation of community policing by the Cape Town City Police, can be planned, executed and the results thereof be evaluated. It deals with the relevant historical perspectives, presents a workable definition for community policing that will direct the further conduct of the research and provides detailed discussions on each of the elements of community policing. Implementation of this policing method with specific reference to South Africa, the requirements of a community police officer, as well as the relationship between fear, disorder and crime are also dealt with here. The results of the researcher's empirical study are furthermore presented and it is concluded that certain steps have indeed been taken by the Cape Town City Police towards the institutionalisation of community policing and that the full implementation of community policing by this service can be expected to have a significant impact on the prevention of crime in Cape Town. In closing, the reader is presented with practical recommendations which will ensure the effective implementation of community policing by the Cape Town City Police.

Public Goods for a Few: The Role of Crime Prevention and Security Districts in New Orleans

Wise, Ryan Galvin 01 May 2013 (has links)
This study adds to the limited literature on residentially-focused special taxing districts by addressing three questions on crime prevention and security districts in New Orleans. 1) Do the districts share common characteristics? 2) Do they act as a tool to retain residents? 3) Do they represent what A.O. Hirschman would characterize as “exit,” “voice” or neither, and, as such, how do they effect the city’s potential for service improvement? The findings show that the districts tend to be wealthier and whiter, and to have higher homeownership rates and home values than the city at large. However, exceptionalities in three of the newer districts suggest greater diversification. This could represent a shift in the perceived role of neighborhood organizations in meeting residents’ service needs. This study also finds that districts act as mechanisms to retain and, in some cases, placate residents who might otherwise be influential constituencies demanding improved municipal services.

Theft of personal belongings on college campuses

Unknown Date (has links)
With the increasing rate of violent criminal victimization, concerns about safety and prevention have begun to resonate across college campuses throughout the nation. Despite the efforts put forth by institutions of higher education to reduce fear of crime and criminal victimization, college students are subjected to coexist with the probability of crime victimization on campus. The main objective of this thesis was to explore new measures of crime prevention on college campuses. Specifically, the efforts put forth in this study were to focus on understanding the problem of property theft of personal belongings on college campuses. The findings based on Pearson correlations and multiple regression analyses indicate that students’ crime prevention awareness and behavior are highest amongst female and non- victimized students. Crime prevention behavior was best explained by awareness. Furthermore, expanded evaluation of contributing factors may lead to future crime preventive measures such as participation in crime prevention seminars. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Exploring the Intersection of Designing for Crime and the Future of the Public Forum

Benedict, Kathryn M. 01 January 2019 (has links)
As more public spaces are under the influence of private stakeholders in cities, it is important to consider the role, both financial and social, that these stakeholders have on the design of the physical space and the users of the space. This analysis will utilize a qualitative methodological approach to understand the contested redevelopment of a public park in Richmond, Virginia as it transitioned from a city-owned space to a public-private partnership. By gaining a better understanding of the major spheres of influence involved in the redevelopment, namely the large public university and the corporations adjacent to the space, it is understood that the public spaces in question take on forms that are less public and more exclusionary in nature. Upon the conclusion of this analysis, I provide suggestions and recommendations for the future of the public forum and the role that private stakeholders might have in public spaces going forward.
