The present study examines whether the presence of school resource officers (SROs) and their level of involvement in place management activities are associated with higher or lower rates of school-based serious violence. This study uses data from the 2010 School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS) conducted by National Center for Educational Statistics. Propensity score matching is used to create a quasi-experimental design and isolate the influence of SROs and their level of involvement in place management activities on school-based serious violence. The analysis reveals that schools with a school resource officer are associated with higher rates of reported serious violence and those schools with SROs that participate in more place manager duties are also associated with higher rates of reported serious violence. These findings do not support the notion that SROs are acting as effective place managers and through this place management, reducing reported serious violence. Rather, it appears that the presences of a SRO and their execution of place manager duties is associated with an increase in the reporting of serious violence. Policy implications and limitations of the current research are also discussed.

In 1984, Miller published the paper: Bias among forensic document examiners: A need for procedural changes, with the intent to elicit some concern about the amount of cognitive bias among forensic document examiners. There is a need for the development of procedures regarding how a document examiner can minimize the amount of cognitive bias that may lead to erroneous conclusions by the examiner. Such procedures would serve to demonstrate that a conscientious effort was made by the examiner and the submitting agency to control extraneous variables that could bias the results of the examination. Some 28 years after Miller1 the forensic sciences are confronted with serious criticism with respect to cognitive bias (e.g. Risinger et al.2, and the NAS report3). It appears that not much of Millers suggestions have been applied in practice. No good general procedures have been implemented for minimizing the risk of cognitive bias in most institutes. In this paper we address the main issues raised in the 1984 paper, and describe the current state of affairs with respect to minimizing cognitive bias in the forensic sciences. There is still a need for procedural changes in the forensic sciences.

Long-standing health and social inequalities associated with minorities have increased their risk for infection, hospitalization, and death related to COVID-19. This disparity is further exacerbated with incarcerated individuals, yet little attention, both prepandemic and presently, has been devoted to collecting up-to-date data. This study uses the 2004 Survey of Inmates in State Correctional Facilities (SISCF), the most recent data, to explore the general offender population and self-reported chronic and medical health conditions to highlight how COVID-19 will impact marginalized populations. Results from the four binary regression models found that minority males are more likely to have chronic illnesses which increase in probability with longer sentences, number of incarcerations, and advancement in age. Our findings advocate for the development of recent data sets on inmate health, particularly minority individuals, as well as the construction of more precise health measures to address these health disparities, including COVID-19.
