Strategic Thinking in Crisis Management : A Study into how Organisations Use Strategic Thinking to Overcome Unusually Demanding Situations

Krasnici, Valon, Fors Lindeberg, Marcus January 2020 (has links)
Strategy and strategic management have always been on the radar in academia. A few years back, some scholars studied strategic management further and concluded that the terms strategic planning and strategic thinking as part of strategic management should be spoken of seperately. As academia has evolved, few scholars have embraced this. However, there is a clear distinction between the two terms, where a separation is necessary in order to fully comprehend the differences between them. In this study, a line between strategic planning and thinking has been drawn. What was further realised in the first phase of the study is that strategic thinking as an individual concept lacks integration into crisis management in academia. This presented a fruitful opportunity to explore the topic. The purpose of this research thereby became to identify how strategic thinking may occur within organisations, particularly during a crisis. Specifically, it is the aim to find out how strategic thinking manifests itself in private organisations during times of crisis. This has been done in a timely manner where the world currently is experiencing a pandemic caused by the virus Covid-19, which has presented difficulties for organisations all around the world. The study has chosen to look into private organisations operating in Sweden, with a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews. Primary data was as a result gathered based on respondents' own experiences and thoughts regarding strategic thinking as the concept is of a complex nature. The data gathered was later analysed in a manner where the connection between strategic thinking and crisis management was looked at. Our findings show that strategic thinking is manifested in crisis management in different ways, where it was determined that the manifestation is highly dependent upon an organisation's strategy, environment in which it operates in and its overall business model. Strategic thinking has additionally been concluded to manifest differently in terms of opportunities and threats, where it was found that some respondents used it more for the long-term benefit of the organisations rather than as a short-term solution to obstacles.

Krisplan till agerande : fallstudie om hur svenska kommuner hanterar krisen till följd av covid-19

Karhukorpi, Henry, Lundgren, Elin January 2020 (has links)
Södertälje kommun tycks följa krisplanen i största möjliga mån, medan Enköpings kommun å andra sidan verkar ha större benägenhet att agera fritt utifrån krisplanen.

Ljam, Yonas, Björklund, Mathias January 2022 (has links)
This study presents the crisis management of several football clubs and how they acted during the pandemic in relation to stakeholders. The study’s questions are based on the purpose of investigating how football clubs in Sweden's highest division have handled the pandemic and how stakeholders have contributed to their survival. We chose to interview the finance managers for each football club to get as good information as possible. The empirical study is collected qualitatively and quantitatively in the form of semi-structured interviews and statistics from SCB. By examining the football club’s crisis management from an economic perspective, the study has highlighted the stakeholder’s impact in the football clubs. Applied theories in the study are the Stakeholder theory and Mitroff’s model for crisis management, which we used as tools in our analysis. It turned out that the clubs all acted differently in their organizations based on the theories. The crisis management and cooperation with stakeholders have looked different for different football clubs. The conclusion of this study is that the football clubs have handled financial strains in the organization in different ways based on the relationship between their financial stability and the relationship with stakeholders.

How do Swedish companies handle disruptions in global supply chains stemming from the semiconductor crisis?

Lind, Jonathan, Henkow, Simon, Pihl, Isac January 2022 (has links)
Background: Globalization has resulted in a more interconnected world than ever before. Global supply chains are a phenomenon which has led corporations to rely on a network of suppliers in various parts of the world. Such global reliance brings benefits but also exposes organizations to an elevated level of risks. The covid 19 pandemic boosted the digital transformation in societies which put a lot of stress on the already strained semiconductor supply chain. Markets are currently facing supply shortages of semiconductors which leads to adverse impacts on company's operations. Purpose: The purpose is to develop the knowledge and develop patterns and trends regarding how Swedish companies handle disruptions stemming from the semiconductor crisis. Method: By engaging in a comprehensive analysis and gathering of previous literature in the field it will provide a theoretical ground for the research. Thereafter, an empirical data collection in the form of interviews with representatives from the industries in question, has been conducted to provide insights and knowledge regarding the issue. The interview data has then been synthesized and analysed to spot patterns. Conclusion: The results show that the issue is complex, companies may have different abilities and possibilities to impact the situation. Although closer communication with the supply chain,Isac Pihl, Jonathan Lind & Simon Henkow Ulf Linnman2022-05-19shortage”, “SCRM process”, “Crisis management”.Date:Key terms: “Supply chain risk management”, “Global supply chains”, “Semiconductor2engaging in supplier development, stockpiling inventory, utilizing the open market to acquire semiconductors (SPOT market), and quickly adapt to the changing conditions can be concluded to be the most common patterns spotted

Communicating Change in Crisis : A study on crisis communication from managers' point of view

Mehler, William, Lindström, Elias January 2022 (has links)
Change management is an area that is widely researched by practitioners and researchers. Despite the extensive number of frameworks and approaches of how to manage change, most of all change initiatives still fail. Since external crises often imply some form of organizational change, this thesis aims to investigate the questions: How do managers communicate change to their employees during a crisis & what do they communicate? To answer these questions, we conducted semi-structured interviews with six different managers with varying backgrounds. Prior to this, a review of relevant literature was conducted, and a theoretical summary was framed consisting of six different themes. These were, communicating a vision, sensemaking in communication, communication with honesty, communication frequency, communication channels, and communication models. The conclusion showed that communication frequency was one of the most influential factors together with honesty, whereas vision and models were considered less important.

Abusamra, Bayan, Lassooy, Lauriina January 2022 (has links)
Background: Crisis management has become a highly relevant topic due to the Covid-19 pandemic. As a result, restaurants have been forced to implement new business strategies and tactics to mitigate its impact. For restaurants, it quickly became important to adapt and apply the right strategy to survive which created a unique opportunity to form an understanding of what actual strategic choices restaurants have applied during a pandemic.  Purpose: The purpose of this study aims at creating an understanding of how Swedish restaurants in the city of Jönköping have been able to survive the pandemic, more specifically, identify what crisis strategies and tactics restaurant owners have utilized.   Method: The aim of this paper was pursued by a qualitative research method with an inductive approach. In order to investigate the research question, a multiple case study has been conducted. Data have been collected through semi-structured interviews from seven different restaurant owners that form the basis of the empirical data.  Conclusions: The conclusions revealed that the Covid-19 pandemic had a negative effect on the restaurants and that they had to make changes in their activities in order to stay in business. The empirical findings demonstrated these changes as three core strategies utilized through different tactics in order to cope with the pandemic. Given that unexpected events can happen in the future at any time, it is crucial for managers to learn from the past and implement different strategies in their business and thereby successfully adjust to the diverse external environment.

Understanding the contradictory perceptions on the new EU Forest Strategy for 2030 through theories of sense making and meaning making

Gjellan, Karin January 2022 (has links)
It has been clear for decades that climate change will lead to devastating consequences, and how these challenges should be addressed is being discussed on all levels of society. One example is the new EU Forest Strategy for 2030 which is a part of the European Union’s work to cope with the climate crisis. However, many of today’s transboundary and creeping crises are subject to challenges when agreeing on common strategies forward, such as the climate crisis. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how the theories of sense making and meaning making can help in better understanding these challenges. By studying the disagreements between four Swedish actors and the European Commission on the new EU forest strategy for 2030, this thesis demonstrates a practical example of the challenges to address, in a coordinated fashion, climate change. The research is based on a case study approach with the theoretical framework including sense making and meaning making. The theoretical background is complemented by qualitative content analysis and qualitative semi-structured interviews. The results show that the perspectives from sense making and meaning making help better understand the difficulties in agreeing on common strategies to cope with the climate crisis, with the new EU Forest Strategy for 2030 as the example.
