Lean Body Mass and Muscle Cross-Sectional Area Adaptations Among College Age Males With Different Strength Levels Across 11 Weeks of Block Periodized Programmed Resistance Training

Moquin, Paul A., Wetmore, Alexander B., Carroll, Kevin M., Fry, Andrew C., Hornsby, W. G., Stone, Michael H. 01 May 2021 (has links)
The block periodization training paradigm has been shown to produce enhanced gains in strength and power. The purpose of this study is to assess resistance training induced alterations in lean body mass and cross-sectional area using a block periodization training model among individuals (n = 15) of three differing strength levels (high, moderate and low) based on one repetition maximum back squat relative to body weight. A 3 × 5 mixed-design ANOVA was used to examine within-and between-subject changes in cross-sectional area (CSA), lean body mass (LBM), lean body mass adjusted (LBMadjusted) and total body water (TBW) over an 11-week resistance training program. LBMadjusted is total body water subtracted from lean body mass. The ANOVA revealed no statistically significant between-group differences in any independent variable (p > 0.05). Within-group effects showed statistically significant increases in cross-sectional area (p < 0.001), lean body mass (p < 0.001), lean body mass adjusted (p < 0.001) and total body water (p < 0.001) from baseline to post intervention: CSA: 32.7 cm2 ± 8.6; 36.3 cm2 ± 7.2, LBM: 68.0 kg ± 9.5; 70.6 kg ± 9.4, LBMadjusted: 20.4 kg ± 3.1; 21.0 kg ± 3.3 and TBW: 49.8 kg ± 6.9; 51.7 kg ± 6.9. In conclusion, the results of this study suggest subjects experienced an increase in both lean body mass and total body water, regardless of strength level, over the course of the 11-week block periodized program. Gains in lean body mass and cross-sectional area may be due to edema at the early onset of training.

Association of C-Reactive Protein With Mild Cognitive Impairment

Roberts, Rosebud O., Geda, Yonas E., Knopman, David S., Boeve, Bradley F., Christianson, Teresa J.H., Pankratz, V. Shane, Kullo, Iftikhar J., Tangalos, Eric G., Ivnik, Robert J., Petersen, Ronald C. 01 September 2009 (has links)
Background: Inflammation is proposed to play a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease, and may also be involved in the pathogenesis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). This study examined the association of inflammatory markers in serum or plasma with prevalent MCI and MCI subtypes in a population-based sample. Methods: Olmsted County, MN, residents aged 70-89 years on October 1, 2004, were evaluated using the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale, a neurological evaluation, and neuropsychological testing. Information ascertained for each participant was reviewed by an expert panel of neuropsychologists, physicians, and nurses, and a diagnosis of normal cognition, MCI, or dementia was made by consensus. C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis alpha (TNFα), and adiponectin were measured at baseline. Results: Among 313 subjects with MCI and 1570 cognitively normal subjects, a CRP level in the upper quartile (>3.3 mg/L) was significantly associated with MCI (odds ratio [OR], 1.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.00-2.01) and with nonamnestic MCI (OR, 2.05; 95% CI, 1.12-3.78) after adjusting for age, sex, and years of education. However, there was no association with amnestic MCI (OR, 1.21; 95% CI, 0.81-1.82). No association was observed with the other inflammatory markers. Conclusions: Plasma CRP is associated with prevalent MCI and with nonamnestic MCI in elderly, nondemented persons in a population-based setting. These findings suggest the involvement of inflammation in the pathogenesis of MCI.

Effective Managerial Performance and Education: Towards Closing the Gaps

Yasin, Mahmoud M., Gomes, Carlos F., Almeida, Filipe 01 January 2009 (has links)
Desired performance-related characteristics for entry-level managers are studied from the perspective of 106 Portuguese executives. The results indicate that soft characteristics and skills, such us leadership, entrepreneurship and organisational learning skills, appear to be more important than technical skills. While these skills and characteristics are valued by today's business organisations, the educational system does not appear to be preparing its graduates accordingly. The resulting educational gaps have important performance-related implications to both the business organisations and the higher education institutions.

Weight Misperception and Health-Related Quality of Life in Appalachian Adolescents in the United States

Southerland, Jodi L., Wang, Liang, Slawson, Deborah L. 01 January 2017 (has links)
Introduction There is limited research on the relation between weight misperceptions and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among U.S. adolescents. Methods Baseline data (n = 1509) collected in 2012 from the Team Up for Healthy Living project were used. Measures included BMI percentiles calculated from measured height and weight; self-perception of weight status; and the 23-item PedsQL™ Inventory. Multiple linear regression was performed after adjustment for covariates to examine associations between weight misperception and HRQoL. Results Compared to accurate weight perception, weight underestimation was associated with higher total HRQoL (β = 2.41), physical health (β = 2.77), and emotional (β = 2.83), social (β = 2.47) and psychosocial functioning (β = 2.38) (all p < 0.05). Weight overestimation was associated with lower social functioning (β = −13.13, p < 0.05). Stratified by gender, associations were observed only in males. Discussion Weight underestimation had greater association with HRQoL than weight overestimation; and varied by gender. Better understanding of these associations will assist in improving the health of adolescents in Southern Appalachia.

A Comparison of Lidar Generated Channel Features with Ground-Surveyed Channel Features in the Little Creek Watershed

Hilburn, Ryan M 01 June 2010 (has links)
Detecting change in stream channel features over time is important in understanding channel morphology and the effects of both natural and anthropogenic influences. Channel features historically, and now currently, are being measured using a variety of ground survey techniques. These surveys require substantial time commitments and funding to complete. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) is an airborne laser mapping technology that holds promise to provide an alternative to ground-based survey methods. For this study, ground surveys were used to verify the accuracy of data collected using airborne LiDAR. Fifty nine cross-sectional profiles were surveyed in the Little Creek watershed at Cal Poly’s Swanton Pacific Ranch and compared to LiDAR-generated profiles of the same location. LiDAR data were collected in two flights during April and May of 2002. The vertical accuracy of LiDAR elevations was determined to be 0.610 m RSME based on a point-to-point comparison of the elevation of ground survey points in each cross-sectional profile to the corresponding LiDAR elevation. The average ground spacing of the LiDAR survey within the study area was one point every 5.2 square meters. In comparison to ground surveys it was found that with this level of vertical precision and horizontal resolution it would be difficult to detect change in bankfull channel characteristics of a relatively small channel, such as Little Creek. These difficulties are largely attributed to poor point coverage in forested, steep, and mountainous terrain, along with technological limitations of LiDAR that have since improved.

Usage of Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in a sample of New Zealanders with osteoarthritis : A cross-sectional study / Användning av icke-steroida antiinflammatoriska läkemedel i ett stickprov av Nya Zeeländare med artros : En tvärsnittsstudie

Swenson, Victor, Ekberg, Mattias January 2020 (has links)
Introduction Oral Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) is an analgesia and is commonly used by people with osteoarthritis (OA). Oral NSAID is currently recommended as the second level of treatment for OA, and could be considered if physical activity, topical NSAID or paracetamol do not supply sufficient pain relief.   Aim To investigate how frequently oral NSAID is used in a sample of New Zealanders with OA and also to investigate the exposure to heightened risk of adverse events while using oral NSAID.   Method A cross-sectional survey was conducted to collect information about the use of oral NSAID by people with self-reported OA. The survey included 75 participants who were over the age of 45 with an average age of 70.6 years.   Results While having OA, 57,3% of the sample reported oral NSAID use. The results also show that 52% of the participants with cardiovascular (CV), gastrointestinal (GI) or renal comorbidities used oral NSAID, and 17,3% of them also combined that NSAID with medication for their comorbidity. Concerning the heightened risks of adverse events, 21% of the participants did acquire the analgesia over the counter (OTC), and 76,6% stated that they were over the age of 65.    Conclusion A majority of the participants in the study with self-reported OA take NSAID as an analgesia. Also, the study shows that NSAID is commonly used among participants with co-morbidity, which is similar to figures presented in previous studies in the area. However, the small sample size limits its generalizability to a larger population.

During the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, U.S. conservative politicians and the media downplayed the risk of both contracting COVID-19 and the effectiveness of recommended health behaviors. Health behavior theories suggest perceived vulnerability to a health threat and perceived effectiveness of recommended health-protective behaviors determine motivation to follow recommendations. Accordingly, we predicted that—as a result of politicization of the pandemic—politically conservative Americans would be less likely to enact recommended health-protective behaviors. In two longitudinal studies of U.S. residents, political conservatism was inversely associated with perceived health risk and adoption of health-protective behaviors over time. The effects of political orientation on health-protective behaviors were mediated by perceived risk of infection, perceived severity of infection, and perceived effectiveness of the health-protective behaviors. In a global cross-national analysis, effects were stronger in the U.S. (N = 10,923) than in an international sample (total N = 51,986), highlighting the increased and overt politicization of health behaviors in the U.S. / New York University Abu Dhabi
