A partir de uma investigação na cidade de São Luis, são consideradas políticas, narrativas e instituições que afirmam diferenciação e semelhança entre Maranhão e Brasil- ou seja, região e nação. Atenta-se aqui para as experiências atuais que marcam essa identidade, para a estrutura de relações sociais, a história e as negociações de significados que atribuem sentidos a "ser maranhense". Estas questões são i<;lentificadas nas festas populares, promovidas por instituições culturais para os locais e para os turistas, enfocando disputas políticas, simbólicas e econômicas que perpassam os eventos, e destacando os distintos agentes neles envolvidos. A investigação considera as classificações sobre produções culturais que ordenam os valores erudito e popular, em hierarquias distintas, a partir das quais alguns símbolos assumem centralidade em contextos específicos da experiência identitária. Neste processo, a tradição articula passado e presente, e escolhe, num repertório de significados disponíveis, o que será lembrado e esquecido. As diferenças e desigualdades são percebidas e podem ser articuladas como distintos níveis de pertencimento. Porém, nessas articulações, percebe-se também o que se compartilha como maranhense, mesmo que os significados que lhes dá sentido (como maranhense) tenham variado ao longo do tempo / Abstract: This research seeks to understand the fonnulation process of the "maranhense" identity, infonned by historicalIy distinct symbolic configurations. From an investigation in the city of Sao Luis, politics, narratives and institutions are considered in the way they affinn differentiation and similarities between Maranhao and Brasil - that is, between region and nation. The analysis focuses the current experiences that confonn this identity, the structure of social relations, the history and the negotiations around the meanings that confer senses of "being maranhense". AlI these questions are identified in the popular parties, promoted by cultural institutions for the locaIs as welI as for the toOOsts, higWighting political, econornical and symbolic disputes that intertwine and emphasizing the distinct agents involved in it. The investigation considers the classification of the cultural production that arrange the erudite and popular values in distinct hierarchies, from which some symbols assume centrality in specific contexts of the identity experience. In this process, the tradition articulates past and present and chooses - among a repertoire of available meanings - what will be remembered and what will be forgotten.
