Proposta de um vocabulário bilíngue de festas populares brasileiras baseada em um estudo de corpus / A bilingual vocabulary of Brazilian festivals: a model based on a corpus study

O objetivo desta pesquisa é propor um vocabulário bilíngue na direção português/inglês sobre festas populares brasileiras, tendo como público-alvo profissionais que lidam com guias turísticos em inglês sobre o Brasil, sejam eles traduções ou produções nesse idioma. A pesquisa tem a Linguística de Corpus como aporte metodológico e faz uso de um corpus paralelo composto por textos turísticos sobre o Brasil escritos originalmente em português e suas respectivas traduções para o inglês; e de um corpus comparável composto por um subcorpus com textos turísticos sobre o Brasil escritos originalmente em português, e outro subcorpus contendo textos turísticos escritos orginalmente em inglês. Com o corpus paralelo objetivamos identificar os desafios encontrados pelos tradutores ao depararem com os referentes culturais relativos a festas populares brasileiras para que pudéssemos pensar uma obra terminográfica que vá ao encontro de suas necessidades. A análise desse corpus está pautada na Teoria Funcionalista da Tradução e as soluções encontradas pelos tradutores foram descritas segundo a lista de estratégias de tradução para referentes culturais de Marco (2002). Com relação ao corpus comparável, este nos ajudou nas escolhas lexicais para a redação das definições das entradas na obra além de nos ter auxiliado a determinar quais informações os verbetes deveriam conter. O vocabulário proposto tem como base a Teoria Comunicativa da Terminologia de Maria Teresa Cabré (1999). / The aim of this research is to propose a bilingual vocabulary (Portuguese/English) of Brazilian festivities, which has as its target audience professionals who produce tourist texts in English about Brazil, being them translations or texts written originally in this language. The research has Corpus Linguistics as its methodology and uses a parallel corpus composed of tourist texts about Brazil written originally in Portuguese and their translations into English; and a comparable corpus composed of a subcorpus with tourist texts about Brazil written originally in Portuguese and by a subcorpus with tourist texts written originally in English. With the parallel corpus, we identified the challenges encountered by translators when coming across cultural words related to Brazilian festivities in order to propose a reference work that can meet their needs. The analysis of this corpus draws on the functionalist view of translation and the solutions found by the translators were described according to a list of strategies for the translation of cultural words developed by Marco (2002). As regards the comparable corpus, it helped us with the lexical choices for the definitions of each entry. It also revealed the information each entry should contain. The proposed vocabulary is based on Maria Teresa Cabrés Communicative Theory of Terminology (1999).

Quelques problèmes de culturalité spécifique relatifs à la traduction en suédois de textes français de langue de spécialité

This essay treats some of the problems that often arise when a translator translates texts which could be characterized as "culturally coloured" texts. Some people think that these kind of texts are not translatable. We want to show that, on the contrary, they are possible to translate into another language, even if it is not possible to translate them literally, word for word. First we present the material that our own translations are based on, and we discuss different terms relating to "untranslatable" words. Then we analyse and discuss different theories and approaches to translation, approaches that help us to find an acceptable translation of cultural words. Finally we present and analyse words that caused us problems in our efforts to translate from French into Swedish.

Translating terms and cultural aspects from English to Swedish in a social scientific text about gastronomy

The present study deals with the translation of a text about tourism and gastronomy. The analysis focuses on the translation of cultural words and terminology. The aim of the study was to analyse the translation problems that may arise in an academic text dealing with tourism and gastronomy, and see what strategies are usable to handle these problems. The translation strategies that are used in the analysis are Vinay & Darbelnet’s (2008) and Newmark’s (1988). A number of different translation problems were addressed, for instance how to deal with borrowings and with cultural adaptations.

Traduire l’économie : Une approche fonctionnaliste à la traduction de textes sur l’économie pour les étudiants en 2022 / Translating Economics : A functional approach to translation of economic texts for students in 2022

This paper analyses cultural factors in translation from French to Swedish of four articles about economic theory for a non-specialized audience. The base hypothesis is that given the content of the articles (basic theories in Economics, such as monopolies, game theory and price discrimination) and the similarity of readers of both source and target texts (non-specialized audiences, e.g., students in Economics), cultural differences should not give rise to translation problems. The paper explores whether this is the case, and if so, how the translation difficulties can be solved. The main theoretical framework are the functional models of Nord and Reiss, which are complemented by theories on intertextuality in translation, cultural words and anglicisms. We conclude that contrary to the base hypothesis, there are several translation problems due to cultural differences. Strategies for solving them are built around the concepts of naturalisation and foreignization, as well as Brynja Svane’s theoretical model.

Class Management, Teaching and Teacher-students Interactions in Crowded Classrooms : An observational analysis in an urban Catholic single gendered school

One of my concerns has been how children behave in a crowded classroom with few available opportunities to interact and rehearse the lesson with their peers and teacher. This research paper allows me to explore how teacher`s directives/ manners  (verbal & non-verbal communication) during the English lesson,  impact and fix children`s behaviours temporarily.  I have conducted this emprirical case study in a religious catholic, monolingual, Spanish school conformed only by girls aged 7-9, who are in the third level of its primary level.  As my interest was to analyze the talk of my purpose sampling (teacher-student) and the interactive behaviour in the natural occurring situation in this social setting, the method I chose was the analysis of social interaction, on Conversation Analysis. This allows me to unfold the talk-in-interaction and concentrate on micro-analytic situations using the standard convention to transcribe my selected analysis. Therefore, the contribution of this paper is to explore and demonstrate how disciplinary acts were deilvered by the teacher affecting the child`s subjectivity and performance in a crowded classroom.

Each language has a variety of cultural words that in one way or another are deeply rooted in the culture and society of a country or a region. This includes words and / or expressions that have to do with ecology, material culture, social culture, organisations, customs, ideas, gestures and habits. Cultural words often involve translation difficulties and a translator can find help in different strategies when dealing with such challenges during the translation work.  This essay, in the form of a translation analysis, deals with cultural words and how these have been translated into Swedish. The translated texts regard six different French hikes during which it is possible to visit one or more cheese factories to discover certain quality cheeses and their manufacturing process. The aim of this essay is therefore to analyse six informative texts from a tourist guide titled Rando-fromage en France - Jolies balades et fromageries de qualité (2019) in order to distinguish the different strategies of translations for cultural words, especially those that are complex or whose connotations are lacking in the target language. Based on Svane's (2002) translation strategies for cultural words, this translation analysis describes how proper names, cultural terms and technical terms in the domain of cheese have been translated. The most used strategies are undoubtedly transfers of different kinds and additions, either in the form of a single word or in the form of longer explanations.  The translation analysis shows that there is a strong connection between the choice of translation strategy and the type of text that the source text represents. The analysis also highlights the important role of target language readers as the translation of cultural words is adapted to them.

The subject of this thesis is the translation of wordplays and cultural words in a German tourist brochure into Swedish. The overall aim was to examine which strategies were used to translate them and how the skopos, i.e. the purpose, and the text type affected these choices. Translating wordplays is known to be notoriously difficult, and this is also brought to light in this thesis. Even though 55% of the wordplays could be translated into a wordplay, 32% could not. In a few cases the strategy wordplay à related rhetorical device (for example rhyme, metaphor or irony) was used in order to retain the vocative purpose of the wordplay. A stronger way to ensure and preserve the vocative function in the target text was by using the strategy non wordplay à wordplay, a so-called compensatory strategy – a strategy sometimes deemed necessary. Cultural words are concepts that demand a certain amount of knowledge of the reader. The aim was to examine if these concepts, such as material culture (for example food and towns) and ecology, should be translated by source-text oriented, or rather by target-text oriented translation strategies. The results show that both strategies are indispensable in order to fulfil the skopos of a tourist brochure. However, the target-text oriented strategies, such as generalization and substitution, dominated with 52%. The source-text oriented strategies were used in only 38% of the cases. In some cases the cultural word was translated by an official equivalent, i.e. neither a source- nor target-text oriented strategy.

A Comparison of Arabic Literature Translation into English and Swedish : Inverstigating Domestication in the Translation of Arabic Cultural Words - Imarat Yaqubyan as acase in point

Imarat Yaqubyan is a contemporary Arabic novel that encompasses an intensive and variable Arabic culture; this study contains a survey in tables of cultural words, according to Newmark’s categories, “material culture”, “social culture”, “originations”, and  “gestures and habits”, as well as their correspondences in the English and the Swedish translated novel versions. In this tripled language study, Arabic, English and Swedish, I undertake a qualitative comparison between the translation strategies used by each translator of the English and Swedish versions. For this purpose I apply the taxonomy of translation strategies established by Pedersen, which is divided first into SL-oriented strategies categorized into “Retention”, “Specification” and “Direct Translation”, and secondly the TL-oriented that includes “Generalization”, “Substitution” and “Omission”, as well as the “Official Equivalent”. Through my analyses process, I link Newmark’s metaphors types, terminology and the seven procedures of translating metaphors with Pedersen’s strategies.  In this study, Pedersen’s SL and TL-oriented translation strategies are considered to correspond to Venuti’s terminology of domestication and foreignization. Conclusions are drawn about the use of domesticating strategies in certain cultural words categories of both English and Swedish versions. The study devises the term “False Domestication”. / Imarat Yaqubyan är en modern arabisk roman som omfattar en intensiv och dynamisk arabisk kultur. Denna studie innehåller en undersökning, enligt Newmarks kategorier “materiell kultur”, “social kultur”, “uppkomst” och “gester och vanor”, strukturerad i översiktstabeller av kulturella ord förankrade i den arabiska kulturen, samt deras motsvarigheter på engelska och svenska i de översatta romanerna.  I denna trespråkiga studie – arabiska, engelska och svenska – åtar jag mig en kvalitativ jämförelse mellan översättningsstrategierna som används av respektive den svenska och engelska översättaren av romanen. För detta ändamål tillämpar jag Pedersens taxonomi, vilken har delats upp i översättningsstrategier gällande källkultur/text (SL-oriented), nämligen överföring (retention), specificering (specification) och direktöversättning (direct Translation), samt målkultur/text (TL-oriented), vilka inkluderar generalisering (generalization), ersättning (substitution) och utelämning (omission). Därutöver tillämpas strategin officiell motsvarighet (official equivalent). Genom min analys länkar jag samman Newmarks metafortyper, den gällande terminologin och de sju förfaranden Newmark nämner rörande översättningar av metaforer med Pedersens strategier. I denna studie motsvarar Pedersens SL och TL-översättningsstrategier Venutis begrepp domesticering (domestication) och exotisering (foreignization). Slutsatser dras sedermera angående de strategier som avser domesticeringen av vissa specifika kulturella ord i både den engelska och den svenska versionen. I studien lanseras även begreppet falsk domesticering “False Domestication”.
