An evaluation of Whittle Communications' Channel One by students and teachers

Huffman, Jane Lynne 28 July 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was twofold--first was to investigate how the addition of Channel One to the school day influences student interest in current events. Secondly, to determine how teachers integrate the study of current events into the curriculum. A suburban county school division in the western part of Virginia was selected for the study. The population for this study consists of three groups: (1) all teachers on the faculty at the junior high school and senior high school serving as test sites, (2) all eighth grade Civics students at the junior high school test site, and (3) all twelfth grade U.S. Government students at the senior high school test site. Data was collected via two questionnaires. The responses to the questionnaires was tabulated by calculating percentages to provide data on the research questions. Student relationships considered important to the study were: the differences that exist between students concerning their news habits; opinions about Channel One; reactions to the commercials; and taught and a positive or negative view of the program; the treatment of Channel One in the classroom: and how they judge the quality of the program. Both teachers and students believe students take a greater interest in current events as a result of watching Channel One. The teachers claim Channel One to be an effective tool for instruction in the classroom. Teachers primarily use Channel One for current events discussions. But few integrate the news and information presented into their lessons. Social studies teachers make much greater use of the program than non-social studies teachers. The study concluded that Channel One is perceived as a success. / Ed. D.

A study to assess the status of the teaching of contemporary issues in secondary social studies classrooms in selected school divisions in the state of Virginia

Sellers, James L. January 1984 (has links)
This study assesses the status of the teaching of contemporary issues in secondary social studies classrooms in four southwest Virginia school divisions. One hundred and sixteen secondary teachers in these school divisions were surveyed concerning their attitudes toward contemporary issues and the instruction of these issues in their social studies classrooms. Mean score results show that the issues that teachers perceived to be most significant to humankind were generally those issues that were given more extensive coverage in the curriculum. Teachers were divided when asked what issues would best be covered in each of the four major secondary subject areas. Each subject area was clearly noted for specific coverage of particular issues, with government classes providing the greatest amount of coverage and world history classes the least amount. A variety of teaching strategies, sources of information, and evaluation strategies were implemented in this instruction. Teachers also detailed what they considered to be major sources of support for the teaching of these issues. Finally, while teachers noted that contemporary issues were detailed in their curricula, they perceived limited coordination among teachers in this instruction. They also reported that more coordination among teachers of different secondary social studies courses should exist. / Doctor of Education

An Assessment of the Effect of News Announcements on Stock Prices of Oil and Gas Producing Companies

Wright, Charlotte Jean 08 1900 (has links)
This empirical study is concerned with the extent to which news announcements affect the performance of common equity securities of oil and gas producing companies. The market effects of news announcements are considered to be of importance in resolving two issues. One concerns financial statement disclosure and the second concerns examination of prior oil and gas industry-related accounting research. This dissertation assumes capital market efficiency and addresses two research questions: do news announcements concerning activities of nonintegrated oil and gas producing companies affect the companies' common stock prices, and are announcements concerning nonintegrated oil and gas companies' financial, personnel, explorational, and developmental and operational activities used equally by investors in their decision-making?

[en] NICHOLAS OF CUSA: AN ANALYSIS OF ITS INTERRELIGIOUS SPIRITUALITY AND ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO CHRISTIAN SPIRITUALITY TODAY / [pt] NICOLAU DE CUSA: ANÁLISE DE SUA ESPIRITUALIDADE INTER-RELIGIOSA E SUAS CONTRIBUIÇÕES PARA A ESPIRITUALIDADE CRISTÃ NA ATUALIDADE

FRANCISCO EMANOEL LIMA SANTOS 16 November 2023 (has links)
[en] This research proposes to investigate the inter-religious spirituality of Nicholas of Cusa and his contributions to Christians today in the search for good coexistence between different religions or religious expressions in the world. In general, the research seeks to answer the following questions: who was Nicholas of Cusa, considering his historical, cultural, social and religious context? What is the importance of inter-religious dialogue today and how can Cusa s interreligious spirituality contribute to this debate? Therefore, the research starts from the period of the Late Middle Ages, especially the 15th century, the period in which Nicholas of Cusa lived, until the present day. Initially, a description of the life, work and ministry of Nicholas of Cusa is made in order to introduce him. Afterwards, an analysis of medieval spirituality is made, considering the changes and transformations that occurred at that time, which, somehow, contributed to a more open, innovative, questioning and inclusive spirituality. The purpose is to discuss movements that emerged both in the religious sphere and in the sphere of society at the time and that Cusan spirituality, in a certain way, was influenced by these transformations. Next, some works by Nicholas of Cusa are examined, such as, for example, De pace fidei and Cribratio Alchorani, whose intention is to demonstrate the interreligious spirituality of Cusa, based on his own works. And, finally, the importance of interreligious dialogue and his contributions to the same are discussed, for example, the proposals of theological and humanistic understanding. With regard to the methodological foundations, the research is based on a critical-reflexive analysis of the Cusan sources, the relevant bibliography and texts on the subject.

[pt] A MÚSICA SACRA NO ATUAL CENÁRIO DE EVANGELIZAÇÃO NO BRASIL: ELEMENTOS PARA COMPREENSÃO DO ESTADO DA QUESTÃO / [en] SACRED MUSIC IN TODAY S EVANGELISM SCENARIO IN BRAZIL: ELEMENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE STATE OF THE ART

LUCIENE DOS SANTOS 18 September 2023 (has links)
[en] This dissertation intends to carry out a theological analysis about the role of sacred music in today’s evangelism scenario in Brazil: elements to understand the state of the art. First, we set out on a journey in search of the concept of sacred music and its importance in human life, in Israel, in the first Cristian communities, in order to show that this type of music is an essential element for people to proclaim their faith in worship. Then we focused on the effort to project an anthropological perspective towards sacred music that would contribute to the realization of its harmonic participation in the social integration of people, groups and communities. We also pointed out that the Second Vatican Council contributed to the effective participation of people in the celebrations and to the appearance of a great number of songs and musicians. However, faced by today s demands, we must acknowledge that music when introduced into a certain culture takes over elements that are an integral part of that culture. Therefore, we have been able to present the importance of music as an instrument of evangelism in Brazil.

[pt] PREOCUPAÇÃO MATERNA PRIMÁRIA: CONDIÇÕES DE INSTAURAÇÃO E SEUS DESAFIOS NA ATUALIDADE / [en] PRIMARY MATERNAL PREOCCUPATION: CONDITIONS OF INSTAURATION AND THEIRS CHALLENGES IN ACTUALITY

NATALIA DE TONI GUIMARAES DOS SANTOS 18 February 2022 (has links)
[en] Being a mother is not an universal attribute of the female individuals of the human species, but the conception of mother s function and mother s place are constantly influenced by the socio-cultural context. We are nowadays witnessing a multiplicity of female destinies and it is witnessed that new challenges are being introduced to motherhood, more specifically to the configuration of the primary maternal preoccupation. This classic concept of Donald Winnicott is defined as a maternal state that begins at the end of gestation and lasts throughout the early life of the child, promoting a deep identification from the mother with her baby, in order to enable her to attend to her basic needs. In this state, the woman lives, at the same time and paradoxically, an anchoring in herself, in the infant that returns to her from the process of becoming a mother, as well as a maternal subjectivity silencing in favor of the proto-symbolic and intersubjective communication with the child. Our proposal in this work, then, is to investigate the female experience on the path to maternity, and more specifically, to analyze how it occurs the construction of the primary maternal preoccupation, that is, what conditions for its establishment are, as well as the challenges it shows in the contemporary context. Based on our longitudinal field research with middle-class women of productive and reproductive age in Rio, we point to the emergence of new nuances in the state of primary maternal preoccupation, featured the higher maternal expectation regarding the father s participation in the caring for baby. In this field of maternity construction, the care ethics is a central element, once rather than the biological conditioning of women in the subject matter, the desire and symbolic fields are shown as determinants in this endeavor.

The Stories We Tell: Novellas, News, and the Uses of Casuistry in Early Modern Europe

Burns, Raphaelle J. January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation examines representations of legal, theological, and medical modes of case thinking and case narration in the novella collections of four early modern authors: Giovanni Boccaccio (1313-1375), Marguerite de Navarre (1492-1549), Matteo Bandello (c.1485-1562), and Miguel de Cervantes (1547-1616). It further investigates how these collections perform and problematize practices of narrating and interpreting cases while framing such practices within the context of the navigation of daily news. Indeed, keen observers of the capacity of informal and formal networks to circulate information and opinions in unpredictable ways and on scales unprecedented, these authors also used the novella genre—and the polysemy of the term “novella”—to intervene in contemporary debates on the value of novelty and on the merits of popularizing expert knowledge. I argue that the early modern novella’s role as a literary mediator between professional forms of the case and popular forms of the news report was instrumental to its durable transnational European success. Over the course of this dissertation, I show how these collections depict the art of storytelling qua case narration as an essential ethical component of professional casuistries and of everyday information exchanges. I draw attention to specific professional inflections of the case-novella-news nexus, in order to highlight how each author conceives—and makes the case for—the indispensability of storytelling to spiritual and civic life. I demonstrate that a juridical approach to cases and novelty takes precedence in Boccaccio’s Decameron. I show that, in contrast, Marguerite de Navarre’s Heptaméron relies on distinctly theological conceptions of cases and news. I proceed to compare the type of moral casuistry found in the Heptaméron to that found in Matteo Bandello’s Novelle. Finally, I investigate the consequences of Cervantes’ predilection for a medical approach to case analysis, novelty, and news in his Novelas ejemplares. The broader ambition of this investigation is twofold: first, to contribute a literary and historical perspective to contemporary methodological debates on the value of case thinking in the human sciences and in the liberal professions, and second, to pave the way for an exploration of the casuistical foundations of modern journalism at a time when its epistemological and ethical priorities are sorely in need of being reassessed.
