Robertsson, Anders January 2014 (has links)
Cyberloafing avser privat internetanvändning under arbetstid.

Cyberloafing : En enkätstudie om internetanvändning för privat bruk under arbetstid / Cyberloafing : A questionnaire study on Internet use for privatepurposes during working hours

Graepler, Charlotte, Johansson, Ulrika January 2012 (has links)
Technology has made great strides during the last years. The development of technology has created new opportunities for growth and marketing for companies. Internet is a tool that has helped to createtheseopportunities. This asset has also led to an opportunity for employees to engage in”invisible”, non-work related activities such as cyberloafing (internet use for personal use during working hours). Previous researchhas reportedtwo levels of cyberloafing which are called minor cyberloafing (e.g. sending and receiving private e-mail) and severe cyberloafing (e.g. participate in online games involving real money). The purpose of this study was to examine the activities that occurred when employees used the Internet for private purposes and also why cyberloafing occurred. The purpose was also to studytherelationships between participants' attitude towards cyberloafing and how they felt that cyberloafing affected their job performance. It also examined if therewasa connection between how many times per day the participants on average used the cyberloafing and their attitude towards the subject. It was of interest to investigate whether there were any differences between the public and the private sector. The study was conducted using an online questionnaire and had 87 respondents. The participants came from companiesinthe Trestads area. Therequirementwas that the employees had daily access to Internet. Our results showed that the most common activity was visiting news sites. The results of this study showed some significant differences between genders and between the public and the private sector.

Role of Middle Managers in Mitigating Employee Cyberloafing in the Workplace

Aku, Anizizo 01 January 2017 (has links)
Companies in the United States are concerned about the indeterminate effectiveness of corporate cyberloafing mitigation efforts leading to the persistence of employee cyberloafing behavior. Although middle managers are the driving force behind the transformational influences that guide employee productivity and could proffer practical solutions, a lack of clarity surrounds the middle manager's role in the overall cyberloafing mitigation efforts within organizations. The central research question for this transcendental phenomenological research study explored the lived experiences of middle managers regarding their roles in mitigating employee cyberloafing at higher education institutions in Florida. This study used a social constructivist-interpretive framework that draws from the multiple realities constructed through social interactions and lived experiences. Participants included 7 middle managers with experience mitigating cyberloafing at higher education institutions in Florida. Four major themes emerged from an inductive analysis of the data, including managing employee performance, proximity matters, cyberloafing interventions, and understanding employee online technology use. The results and recommendations of this study provide implications for social change. Business organizations may modify cyberloafing mitigation strategies and policies from a better understanding of manager/employee interactions, transformational managerial influences used to mitigate employee cyberloafing, and managerial knowledge of employee appropriation of online technology.

Trådlöst internet på fartygsbryggan : En litteraturstudie om hur användandet av trådlös internetuppkoppling på fartygsbryggan kan påverka individen som operatör och fartygets drift / Wireless internet on the bridge : A literature review of how usage of wireless internet connection on the bridge affects the individual as an operator and the operating of the ship

Hermansson Össtein, Karl, Fredriksson, Philip January 2015 (has links)
This report describes a literature study that examines the wireless local area network (WLAN) aboard the vessels bridge. Society is constantly evolving and the usage of electronic devices with access to the Internet is constantly increasing. The aim of the work was to investigate the wireless connection´s advantages, disadvantages, as well as its positive and negative effects. A literature review was performed and together with the analysis based on a mind map. The results suggests that more negative effects than positive comes with being connected on the vessel´s bridge. The conclusions that can be drawn are that increased availability leads to increased usage. This use affects the individual's focus and health negatively. It can also affect sleep negatively where both quantity and quality deteriorates. The positive aspects WLAN can contribute to are increased well-being of the individual as well as facilitate the work by linking devices together. It is important to optimize the workplace so that health risks are minimized. WLAN generally has a negative effect on the bridge watch. The possibilities that come with WLAN are few in relation to the risks.

The Relationship Between Cyberloafing and Task Performance and an Examination of the Theory of Planned Behavior as a Model of Cyberloafing

Askew, Kevin Landon 01 January 2012 (has links)
Counterproductive work behaviors have been studied extensively, but much less work has been done on cyberloafing - the personal use of the internet at work. The purpose of this investigation was threefold: a) replicate a previous finding and test the Theory of Planned Behavior as a model of the antecedents of cyberloafing, b) investigate the influence of cyberloafing on task performance in actual organizations, and c) examine the relationship between cyberloafing and job satisfaction in actual organizations. Four hundred forty seven subordinates and 147 supervisors from various organizations participated in the current investigation. Results suggest that a) the Theory of Planned Behavior is an appropriate model of the antecedents of cyberloafing, b) cyberloafing might not have a strong influence on task performance, except when done frequently and in long durations, and c) job satisfaction is unrelated to cyberloafing on a desktop but is related to cyberloafing on a cellphone. Implications and future directions are discussed.

Strategies Functional Managers Use to Control Cyberloafing Behaviors

Holguin, Emilsen Salazar 01 January 2016 (has links)
Computer technologies have increased the opportunities for employees to engage in cyberloafing by using the Internet at work for personal purposes. Uncontrolled cyberloafing is a threat to organizational effectiveness because it affects organizational productivity. The purpose of this single case study was to explore successful strategies functional managers use to control cyberloafing behaviors of their employees at an e-learning organization located in the northeastern United States. The theory of planned behavior, which emphasized behavioral, normative, and control beliefs as key elements to predict individuals' intentions to behave was the conceptual framework. Data collection included semistructured face-to-face interviews with 11 functional managers and an exploration of organizational policies, procedures, and handbooks. Data analysis included examination of word frequencies, keyword coding, and theme identification. Using Yin's 5 steps for data analysis, 3 themes emerged: create engaging jobs, communicate clear expectations, and promote a positive work environment. Functional managers in the e-learning organization in this study may control cyberloafing by ensuring that social norms convey disapproval, combining deterrence policies and performance metrics; and showing attitudes that promote citizenship behaviors. The implications for positive social change include the potential to provide the e-learning organization in this study with best practices that support employees' needs for work-life balance, thus promoting employee satisfaction while maximizing employee productivity. As a result, the findings of this study can decrease stress, increase morale and positively impact the overall well-being of the organization's workforce.

Uncontrolled Workplace Breaks and Productivity

Mashal, Huda 01 January 2017 (has links)
Behaviors that may waste time in the workplace, like surfing the Internet for personal purposes (cyberloafing) or smoking breaks, may be the root antecedent for poor productivity. The purpose of this correlational study was to examine whether there was a relationship between the independent variables: time spent cyberloafing and time in uncontrolled smoking breaks, and the dependent variable: employee productivity. Procedural justice theory was used to frame the study. The population consisted of 34 employees working in a multinational engineering company in Jordan who have official smoking policies, but not cyberloafing policies. Correlations and multiple regression were computed using a Cyberloafing Scale and time spent smoking (independent variables) and The Endicott Work Productivity Scale (dependent variable). The results of the correlations indicated no significant relationship between Internet surfing and employee productivity. Smoking breaks were not a significant source of wasted time during the workday (the subsample and frequency of engaging in smoking were low); therefore, smoking did not have an effect on productivity. The findings of this study support the theory that using the Internet at work does not affect employee productivity. These findings have implications for positive social change that are also supported by existing research. Employees who engage in personal Internet activities at work tend to meet private demands and obligations. This connectivity may help to facilitate work-life balance.

Tietoturvakoulutuksen vaikuttavuuden arviointi yksilön ja organisaation tietoturvakäyttäytymiseen

Nykänen, K. (Kari) 02 November 2011 (has links)
Abstract Information security is a key factor supporting companies' security and business requirements, and it is significantly affected by the information security behavior of the employees. Previous research has studied empirically as to which factors explains employees' compliance with information security policies and instructions. However, there are only a few empirical studied on the effectiveness of information security training on the information security behavior of employees. Especially, studies examining the effect on training on employees' cyberloafing (non-work related Internet use) behavior are far and few between. To address this gap in research, this thesis carries out an action research study aimed at improving employees' cyberloafing behavior at an organizational context. The results suggest that cyberloafing can be reduced by a proper training. Tutkimus suoritetaan noudattaen toimintatutkimusmallia kahdessa vaiheessa, joista toisessa sovelletaan kokeellista tutkimusmenetelmää. Pitkittäistutkimuksen ensimmäisessä vaiheessa tutkitaan organisaation tietoturvakäyttäytymistä ja -toimintaa. Tämän perusteella suunnitellaan koulutusmenetelmä, jonka avulla pyritään ratkaisemaan organisaation tietoturvatoiminnan keskeiset ongelmat ja parantamaan yksilön tietoturvatietoisuutta. Toisessa vaiheessa koulutusmenetelmää kehitetään ja laajennetaan koko organisaation henkilökunnan tasolle, minkä tavoitteena on muuttaa yksilön työhön liittymätöntä Internet-käyttäytymistä. Tutkimuksessa sovelletaan kriminologiaan pohjautuvaa neutralisoimisteoriaa ja sosiaalipsykologian tapateoriaa, joiden avulla pyritään selittämään yksilön työhön liittymätöntä Internet-käyttäytymistä. Tietoturvakoulutuksen laadinnassa sovelletaan oppimisen psykologiaa, sosiokonstruktiivista oppimisnäkemystä ja muutos-johtamista. Tutkimustulokset tarjoavat uutta tietoa siitä, mitä tulee huomioida laadittaessa organisaation tietoturvakoulutusta ja miten huolellisesti laaditun koulutuksen avulla voidaan muuttaa yksilön työhön liittymätöntä Internet-käyttäytymistä. Koulutuksen avulla pyritään vaikuttamaan yksilön syvälle juurtuneisiin tapoihin, käyttäytymiseen ja vastuunottamiseen omasta toiminnasta.

Organizational Information Security: Strategies to Minimize Workplace Cyberloafing for Increased Productivity

Al Abbasi, Hawazin 01 January 2018 (has links)
Productivity loss occurs in organizations that experience high levels of personal Internet use by employees on company time, which includes employees using smartphones to surf without needing the firm's Internet connection. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore reliable ways for organizational leaders to monitor or limit their employees' use of smartphone technology for personal use (cyberloafing) while on the job to minimize wasted work time. Social cognitive theory, which includes an emphasis on human behavioral changes based upon the environment, people, and behavior, served as the conceptual framework. The general research question was as follows: How can managers minimize wasted work time by limiting the personal Internet activity of employees who use personal mobile devices while on the job. Data collection involved gathering information from interviews with 20 frontline supervisors, human resource managers, and information technology managers and specialists in 2 U.S. industries: education and telecommunications. Data analysis included examining word frequencies, keyword coding, and identifying themes. Four management themes emerged: create mobile device usage policy, enforce monitoring technology, create a deterrence strategy, and customize monitoring and tracking technology. This study may be important because the analysis revealed effective ways to prevent or minimize employees from Internet surfing and wasting time at work. The findings could lead to positive social change through increased employee productivity and responsibility by providing managers with information to control or limit cyberloafing activities and by fostering an increased commitment to comply with an organization's Internet use policy.
