TITLE: Vowel Lenght: Comparison of Czech and French Vowel Systems from the Phonetic and Phonological Point of View. A Pedagogically Focused Contrastive Study. AUTHOR: Kateřina Vychopňová DEPARTMENT: Department of French Language and Literature SUPERVISOR: prof. PhDr. Marie DOHALSKÁ, DrSc./ prof. Philippe MARTIN The thesis, one of the French-Czech contrastive studies, deals with the issue of vowel length in Czech and French language. Korpusový přístup ve výuce češtiny jako cizího jazyka / Corpus approach to teaching Czech as a foreign language

Zasina, Adrian Jan January 2019 (has links)
Title: Corpus approach to teaching Czech as a foreign language Author: Mgr. Bc. Adrian Jan Zasina Department: Institute of the Czech National Corpus Supervisor: Mgr. Lucie Lukešová, Ph.D. Abstract: Recently, we have experienced a rapid development in information technologies which is closely linked with the development of language corpora. Language corpora provide an indispensable amount of authentic data and information about how the real language works, therefore it is no wonder they deserve our attention in language teaching as well. We have seen a growing interest in the use of corpus resources in teaching Czech as a foreign language, however, the methodological issues dealing with specific applications have so far been rather neglected. Therefore, the present dissertation aims to systematically map the possibilities of incorporating corpora into current language teaching while considering the specific language needs of foreigners based on their typical errors. The emphasis is not only on a coherent methodological framework, but also on a practical demonstration of the work with corpus data, which is intended not only for corpus specialists but especially for teachers and their students. The basis of the work lies in an extensive analysis mapping the most problematic phenomena in teaching Czech...

Laický překlad u českých krajanů v Argentině / Fan translation of the Czech ex-patriots in Argentina

Režová, Markéta January 2021 (has links)
(in English): The aim of the present thesis is to investigate and describe the role of non-professional translation and interpreting between Spanish and Czech in the intercultural communication, whose actors were and are Czech compatriots in Argentina. The two introductory parts of the thesis provide a summary on the historical context of the Czech emigration to Argentina and about the language situation of Czech compatriots in Argentina. The theoretical part is based on the sociological turn in translation studies, on the focus on the translator and the history of translation and translators. Methodologically, the thesis is based primarily on archival research and oral history. The empirical part maps the occurrence of amateur translations in our corpus, further, it draws attention to some larger translations made by compatriots and, last but not least, it gathers information about non-professional interpreting in the Czech compatriot communities in Argentina. As a conclusion, the found information is summarized and further possibilities of linguistic research of the Czech compatriot communities in Argentina are proposed.

Czech Opera Arias: An Anthology for Soprano

Nichols, Bree 05 1900 (has links)
This anthology of late 19th- and early 20th-century Czech opera arias for soprano focuses on works that lack existing scholarship, bridging the language gap through translations and pronunciation materials for English-speaking singers. Its 24 arias supplement the works of Smetana, Dvořák, and Janáček with those of contemporaneous composers Karel Bendl, Zdeněk Fibich, Josef Bohuslav Foerster, Karel Kovařovic, Vítězslav Novák, and Otakar Ostrčil. Its musicological scope provides vignettes of the musical-cultural landscape of Czech opera around the turn of the 20th century, the transformation of Czech declamation during that period, and the language knowledge needed to sing the works thereof. Chapter 2 elucidates the methodology used in the anthology's phonetic transcriptions and discusses the unique articulatory demands of singing in Czech. Chapter 3 grounds contemporaneous discussion of Czech declamation as late 19th- and early 20th-century composers and librettists sought to shape a musical voice suited to the features of their language. The following chapter is a look at Janáček's unique solution to this challenge. In Chapter 5, the relationship between criticism and composition is examined for these two faces of Czech modernism. Finally, Chapter 6 includes new performance editions of the arias curated for the anthology. Each aria is accompanied by an idiomatic translation, an inline phonetic transcription and word-for-word translation, a brief biographical introduction of the composer, and background information contextualizing the aria and the work from which it is derived. The objective of the anthology is to facilitate a broader range of well-informed performances of Czech repertoire as well as the acquisition of Czech lyric diction for singers at various experience levels.
