Spánek a snění v českém obrazu světa / Sleep and dream in the Czech picture of the world

The thesis focuses on the conceptual area of sleeping (including waking, dreaming etc.) based on the theories and methods of the cognitive-cultural approach to language. The first chapter deals with the human experience of sleeping. The conceptual area is interpreted both in relation to physical experience and as a part of the Central European cultural code. The second chapter concentrates on the concept and the approach of the linguistic picture of the world (e.g. Bartmiński, 2012), the detection and verification of the semantic connotations method (Bartmiński, Panasiuk, 2001), the conceptual metaphor theory (Lakoff, Johnson, 1980/2002), the cognitive conception of metonymy (cf. ibid), and the interaction between metaphor and metonymy (i.e. metaphtonymy, Goosens, 1990, 2002). The third chapter is based on the linguistic data excerpted from various Czech dictionaries and describes the conceptual area. First are introduced derivational nests, then relevant semantic relations and etymology of the selected terms (spát, bdít etc.). The chapter also analyses polysemy of the selected terms in detail, as well as polysemy of their derivatives. Dětský hrdina v náročné životní situaci - didaktické využití / Child hero in a complicated life situation - didactical application

The purpose of this thesis is to outline different ways of utilising our two chosen literary works for kids and teenagers in czech language and literature classes taking place during later years of primary education. Each of the works presents a child hero in a difficult life situation caused mainly by a bully, where the hero eventually overcomes the situation but expends all his energy in the process. The thesis consists of two units - theoretical and practical. The theoretical unit sums up expert findings on difficult life situations in general and applies them during analysis of our heroes and bullies. The practical unit has been divided into two parts, each covering one of the chosen works. First, we analyse the work's didactic potential, then suggest its utilisation in class and finally reflect on our practical demonstrations. We have also included an additional chapter to the practical unit, describing further ways of utilising one of the works in classes, not only czech language and literature but others as well. Output of this thesis is formed by two commented worksheets and an efficiency evaluation of our suggested class preparations, based on the actual demonstrations. Místo obecné češtiny ve výuce češtiny jako cizího jazyka / The placement of the Common Czech in the teaching of Czech as a foreign language

The aim of this thesis is to find out, and then to analyze, whether adult students of Czech as a foreign language can recognize the differences between Literary and Common Czech language, whether they define where they meet them and whether they are able to use the proper words of Literary and Common form of the Czech language appropriately in selected communication situations. Equally important is the discovery of their personal preferences in teaching whether the Common Czech is intended to be taught in an institutionalized environment or not. The questionnaire survey itself is preceded by a theoretical starting point, in which we deal with the definition of Common and Literary Czech language and the characteristics of their most frequent differences. A partial part of the work is also a brief analysis of the selected teaching material, taking into account the way of presentation of Common Czech language.Based on the results of the questionnaire survey, we will present a linguistic recommendation at the end of the work. The diploma thesis English Language Textbooks as a Possible Source of Inspiration for Teaching the Czech Language at Secondary Schools deals with the design of lessons for teaching Czech language based on the inspiration of English textbooks. The work is based on theoretical knowledge concerning current trends in Czech language didactics (constructivism and its three-phase PPP model including work with students' preconceptions, development of conscious use of the language system, content reduction and content-focused approach). The fundamental starting point is represented by the communicative goals of language teaching as well as on the integration of the language curriculum and the communicative (and literary) components. The practical part of the thesis comprises suggestions for Czech language lessons based on the inspiration from English textbooks, and its basis is a content analysis of three topics (phrasemes and idioms, grammatical voice of verbs, and means of textual continuity) in Czech and English language textbooks for secondary schools. Analýza učebnic pro základní školy z genderového hlediska / An analysis of primary school textbooks from a gender perspective

The present diploma thesis examines gender in Czech language textbooks for the second stage of the primary school. It aims to analyse three selected textbook series published by different publishing houses, using the results to evaluate whether or not individual textbooks depict men and women in a stereotypical manner whether there is discrimination on grounds of language. The thesis comprises a theoretical and empirical part. The theoretical part briefly introduces and delimits the concept of gender. It goes on to discuss selected aspects of linguistic gender discrimination, mainly the use of the generic masculine and inappropriate clichéd language. We also introduce the issue of deriving feminine forms of foreign female family names, which is topical at the time of writing. The final chapter of the theoretical part discusses the impact of gender bias in schooling on pupils'education. The empirical part analyses three textbook series, focussing on the representation of men and women in the subject matter, in illustrations, and on the use of gender-neutral language. The diploma thesis focuses on the so called "false friends" in contemporary Czech and Polish. Both languages are first introduced in the context of their linguistic and typological features as relevant to the subject of the thesis. Particular attention is paid to the differences between the two languages, and therefore possible language interferences. Furthermore, the paper discusses the issue of so called "false friends" and, based on the studies of E. Lotko, there were selected four types of false friends (grammatical (according to the grammatical gender of the noun), lexicographical, stylistic and valency false friends) and discussed more. Those lexical units are first characterized in general terms, and are then focused on the apecific "false friends" contained in the Common European Framework of Reference (levels A1-B1 for Czech as a foreign language). The second part of the thesis (based on the acquired theoretical knowledge) tries to design and recommend a methodology for working with so called "false friends" in the teaching of Czech as a foreign language to the target group of native Polish speakers. This master thesis deals with the construction of a system for automatic classification of~unknown words based on derivation bonds. For this purpose, the system was designed to~extract derivative links based on electronic dictionaries and to create word-forming models from them. Based on this knowledge, it is then possible to incorporate unclassified words into existing nests formed from the obtained bonds, and their models, or create new ones. The reader will be gradually acquainted with the reasons that lead to the continuous transformation or expansion of the lexicon, the ways in which the words in~the~Czech language are derived and how to obtain information about the changes caused by this derivation process. This system builds on and extends the research of the branch of morphology in~the~project of a morphological analyzer of the Research Group of Knowledge Technologies, working at the Faculty of Information Technology of the Brno University of~Technology.

Master’s thesis describes theoretical basics, solution design, and implementation of constituency (phrasal) parser for Czech language, which is based on a part of speech association into phrases. Created program works with manually built and annotated Czech sample corpus to generate probabilistic context free grammar within runtime machine learning. Parser implementation, based on extended CKY algorithm, then for the input Czech sentence decides if the sentence can be generated by the created grammar and for the positive cases constructs the most probable derivation tree. This result is then compared with the expected parse to evaluate constituency parser success rate.

Life and Institutions are some of the key factors of any culture. When it comes to successful communication with other cultures, Intercultural competence is crucial. The study of Life and Institutions should therefore by a mandatory part of teaching Czech as a foreign language. Based on extensive analysis, the thesis examines how Czech Life and Institutions are portrayed in select textbooks for foreigners reaching level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The outcome of the thesis is not only a detailed charting of Life and Institutions found in textbooks of Czech language for foreigners, but also a set of major findings based on the initially proposed questions. The analysis of textbooks is based on theoretical findings, which are introduced in the first part of the thesis and which form the necessary framework for the research part of the thesis. Theory of Frames and its Educational Possibilities Jan Huleja Czech Language Departement PhDr. Ladislav Janovec, Ph.D. Abstract The dissertation Theory of Frames and its Educational Possibilities consists of a theoretical, practical and didactic chapter. The theme of the first chapter is the Theory of Frames that includes a variety of concepts and theoretical views across different humanities and social disciplines that discuss how individuals, groups and societies perceive and organize reality and how they communicate about it. In the next part of the dissertation the application Frames of Ostrava in the Czech Linguistic Picture of the World demonstrates the potential of the Theory of Frames for cultural-linguistic and discourse analyzes. It analyses an extensive and representative sample of Czech language material (text, system and empirical language data) and attempts to reconstruct the Czech linguistic picture of Ostrava. We are focusing on what frames the picture of Ostrava is composed of, i. e. how it is predominantly portrayed by the users of the Czech language, how they narrate about it. At the same time our aim is to present Ostrava as a significant Czech cultural and social phenomenon evoked by such lexical units and structured by such conceptual means that are unmistakably "Ostravian" in the text...
