How Effective is the 2010-2011 D.A.R.E. Program in the Mississippi Delta?

Forrest, LaDetra Michelle 12 May 2012 (has links)
Alcohol and drug use are common among middle school students, but drug use intervention programs in schools can decrease the number of youth participating in such behaviors. More than half of Mississippi’s youth self-reported that they had tried alcohol and cigarettes, and over a third of them had tried marijuana. The Delta Council implemented its 2010-2011 D.A.R.E. program in 33 Delta middle schools and administered pre- and post-test surveys to participating students. Survey items were broken into five domains and responses were assigned a numerical value. Data were divided into subgroups, and t-tests were used to determine if the mean differences between pre- and post-test were significant from zero. Students scored the highest in the areas of active and passive decision making and substance use expectancy which indicates that the program was beneficial to some students.

An evaluation of the stated student outcomes of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program

Uibel, Barbara Marie 11 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stated student outcomes of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program including decreases in positive attitudes toward the use of abusable psychotropics and decreases in the self-reported use of the abusable psychotropics. A multivariate quasi-experimental (pre-test, post-test, post-test) design was used and data were collected measuring student demographics, reported drug use, and drug-related attitudes. Participants were 522 grade five and six students from 44 classrooms. Results indicated that the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program had little lasting effect on drug-related attitudes and reported drug use. The findings are stratified by evaluated risk of substance abuse to determine whether there was a differential effect of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program on subgroups delineated by risk for abusable psychotropic use. Recommendations are made in relation to the findings of this study with regard to pedagogy, programming and possible factors that inform the decisions about abusable psychotropics among this population. Although these findings represent conditions and views at the time of data collection and reflected in the initial literature review, they remain relevant as the issues and motivations that inform the decisions that young people make with regard to the use of abusable psychotropics, as reflected in the second literature review, continues to be an area of significant concern. The matter of devising and implementing timely, effective programming to address the complex problem of abusable psychotropic use by young people remains a relevant issue. / Special Education

Teachers or "Real" Police Officers?: A Study of DARE Officers in Northeast Tennessee.

Commons, Jennifer Lynne 07 May 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Most studies of the Drug Awareness Resistance Education (DARE) program evaluate the program’s effectiveness; this thesis instead examines the police officers who implement the program. Based on interviews with 12 DARE officers in the Northeast region of Tennessee, the thesis explores how members of this special category of police officers identify themselves. The DARE officer interviews were compared with published literature on conventional police officers. All DARE officers interviewed defined themselves as police officers but did little to no actual police work, nor were they viewed by patrol officers as “real” police officers. Instead, DARE officers functioned primarily as educators. In order to maintain their identity as police officers, DARE officers employed the use of props. These props presented the visual image of a police officer and, therefore, allowed DARE officers to define themselves as such.

Evaluating Term Extraction Methods for Domain Analysis

Nemallapudi, Chaitanya 02 September 2010 (has links)
This study compared the vocabularies created by various domain experts and the source documents selected by them to create the vocabulary. The results indicate that there is similarity among the vocabularies created and the source documents selected. Also, the relationship between the overlap scores of vocabularies created and overlap scores of source documents selected was tested and it was observed that no significant relation exists between them. In addition, the variability of the overlap scores of the vocabularies generated automatically to the variability of the overlap scores of those produced manually by domain experts was evaluated. The results suggested that these vocabularies are significantly different from each other. / Master of Science

Une approche de son expression à partir de ses trois documentaires : Madonna, Truth or Dare, 1991 ; I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, 2005 ; I Am Because We Are, 2008 / The power of religion and politics in Madonna's work. An approach to her expression through her documentaries : Madonna, Truth or Dare, 1991; I'm Going to Tell You a Secret, 2005; I Am Because We Are, 2008

This dissertation deals with the ways in which the contemporary popular culture uses concepts and tools coming from religion and politics in order to exert some influence on our society. The length of American singer Madonna’s career makes her decades-long artistic expression a privileged locus where such concepts can be grasped and analysed, starting in the 1990’s. This provides the opportunity to better understand the means of expression in our contemporary world, together with what is at stake in popular culture.

LERGJORD : Stampad lerjord som ett innovationsmaterial i Skåne / EARTHMADE : Rammed earth as innovation material in Scania

Dovberg, Ludvig, Tobias, Löfgren January 2021 (has links)
Lergjord is a thesis that puts emphasis on the possibility of innovation by using local biobased material in the building industry of Skåne in Sweden. The thesis examines if rammed earth can be used in the implementation of LFM30 (Translated into English: Local Sustainable Goals in Malmö by 2030). By use of qualitative research methods, views on rammed earth as a building technique was explored by three stakeholders. This research has concluded if rammed earth is possible in Skåne as a conventional material in the future. We (Ludvig Dovberg and Tobias Löfgren) have examined the practical aspect of rammed earth on Urban Living Lab in the municipality of Lund by the use of local clay material from excavation for an expansion of a new railway between Malmö and Lund in collaboration with Trafikverket. This thesis concludes that rammed earth is feasible with clay from the excavation masses through project LERGJORD. Also, due to the vast quantity of it the resource might be useful for future rammed earth projects in Skåne. However, the building technique itself has some major drawbacks such as time-consumption and the knowledge gap is easily addressed. Although, there has been a development of a pre-fabrication concept of the building technique in Germany since the late 1990s, that could be a solution to the problem. The thesis also concludes that  higher education and research is compulsory to establish a knowledge base for architects to work by. The case study showcased that a standardization of the material is needed to prevent vast material testing before being accepted for construction, like the Lehmbau-praxis in Germany. According to the material’s low impact in CO₂-emission and circularity this resourceful extraction could be of interest by the members of LFM30 to implement in the building industry of Skåne.

Abstract: This paper seeks to verify the interests behind the implementation of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), a drug prevention program created in the United States in the beginning of the 1980's, by the São Paulo State Military Police starting on 1993 in Brazil under the name Programa Educacional de Resistência às Drogas e à Violência, known by the acronym PROERD. It became necessary to study the drug prevention policies adopted by both countries, as well as the law that permitted the military police to apply a prevention program in schools. The Brazilian-American relationship starting around 1930 was also researched, until the end of the military regime and the beginning of the Brazilian re-democratization process, taking under account the role of the repressive forces of the State during this period. The constitution of the São Paulo State Military Police in the beginning of the 1970's was also researched, as well as the social changes that have occurred throughout its existence and that required changes in its way of operating, bringing the need of the adoption of a different structure around community policing. The perceived image of the military police, especially during the military regime, had contributed to the separation from the community and the disapproval of their acts by the citizens, that started demanding an institution that is committed to the preservation of life and integrity, being the PROERD and the community policing attempts to re-establish a relationship with society, building a positive image of the police force in regards to a more humanistic perspective. / Mestrado / Educação, Conhecimento, Linguagem e Arte / Mestre em Educação
