Evasão escolar na educação profissional: diagnóstico dos cursos técnicos subsequentes do Colégio Estadual de Pato Branco

Gugelmin, Lisangela 24 July 2015 (has links)
The Professional Education is an area of teaching deeply interrelated to the insertion of the individuals in the world of work once under the premise of their relationship between education and work. This study aimed to depict the school evasion in the subsequent courses of Colégio Estadual de Pato Branco ( CEPB) through the realization of a diagnosis about the flow of the enrolments in the courses and the measure of the identified indices of evasion in the period between 2007 to 2012, as well as to identify what are the factors that are causing that. For that, the research was divided in two different stages, the first as a quantitative one which comprehended to analyze the school institution reports in order to collect data and measure the enrolments flow and the calculation of the evasion indices, and the second one as a qualitative research through semi structures interviews in order to identify the possible factors that contribute to the school dropouts. It was identified that the CEPB technical subsequent courses registered high level of evasion during the period of 2007 and 2012, considering that the highest levels were on the Administration and Informatics Technic courses and, the first years of courses have the highest levels of evasions. It was also identified that the dropouts in the subsequent courses show complexity and results of a correlation of several elements being the social and economics the most relevant for the decision of abandoning the professional education course.

An investigation into the social experiences of dropouts following their reenrollment in secondary schools in Stutterheim district: implications for school leadership

Smith, Elizabeth Marrie January 2009 (has links)
Many secondary schools in the Eastern Cape and else where in South African are facing a drop out crisis but a proportion of these dropouts return to school to complete their education. The kind of social experiences that dropouts have as they reenrol and reintegrate in school remains an under-research aspect in the discourse on education access. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors that prompted dropouts to reenrol in school and the social life experiences of these learners in school. It was also to explore school leaders‟ reactions towards these experiences, and the implications for school leadership of the dropouts‟ experiences. Using qualitative methodologies, involving a sample of 15 dropouts and two school leaders, the study found multiple motives, associated with individual characteristics of dropouts and the institutional characteristics of their family and the labour market, prompting reenrolment. Institutional characteristics at the school level were not featured. Regarding social life at school, it found that while some participants had positive social experiences, which reinforced their motivation to pursue their education, others experienced the school context as socially hostile. The nature of the social hostility is described, but school leaders seem insensitive to many of the social integration challenges that confront dropouts. Several implications for school leadership have been drawn out, including the view that while there are a variety of leverage points for addressing the social hostility problems, the social development of dropouts who experienced hostility stand to wither if supportive measures are not implemented to help them reintegrate. While the research provides new insights into the experiences of dropouts in school, it had the limitation of being a case study whose findings cannot be generalised.

An examination of the relationship between learner and teacher motivation and self-efficacy in relation to the intention of learners to drop out of school

Davidse, Portia January 2016 (has links)
Magister Artium (Social Work) - MA(SW) / Learner and teacher motivation are vital to the study of learner retention or dropout rates in schools. Together with self-efficacy of both teachers and learners, its effect on learner retention rates in South African secondary schools can no longer be ignored. The aim of this research was to examine the relationships of learner and teacher motivation and self-efficacy with learners’ intention to drop out of high school. The Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Bandura’s Theory of Self-efficacy were adopted to explain the relationship between studied variables. A quantitative methodology was used with a cross-sectional comparative design. The sample consisted of 625 learners and 111 teachers from 5 randomly selected high schools in the Metro North (from 43 government high schools) and 5 randomly selected schools in Metro East (from 42 government high schools) Education Districts in the Western Cape. Fifty percent of the schools were considered low income schools based on the school fees requirement. The data were collected using self-report questionnaires consisting of four sections, Demographic Information, the Motivational Index, Self-efficacy and Dropout Perceptions. The data were analysed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS V23). The current study found no significant relationships between teacher and learner motivation and self-efficacy. However, there was a significant negative relationship between teacher self-efficacy and learners’ intention to drop out of school. There was also a significant positive relationship between learner motivation and learners’ intention to drop out of school. Further research should be conducted to establish the reasons why there are negative relationships between teacher self-efficacy and learner self- efficacy. Also why a large number of learners, especially those from low socio-economic schools, seem more motivated to leave school than to persist. A further investigation is also required into the predictive factors which lead to learner vulnerability to drop out of school.

A Study on Retention: Positive Steps for a Small Liberal Arts College

Woodley, Michael January 2012 (has links)
Retention is a concern for colleges and universities nationwide. The focus of this study is what a small private liberal arts college does well in terms of retaining students by examining the students who left the college for a minimum of one semester and then returned to finish their degree. A survey instrument was used to examine the positive impact the faculty, academic advising, academic program, student services, technology, and the living environment had on the return of reactivated students to Jamestown College (JC). The survey instrument was also used to find out the reasons students attended JC initially, why they left, why they came back, what they like the most, and what they like the least about JC. The faculty and staff of JC had the most positive impact on reactivated students returning to JC. Other factors that positively impacted the students included academic advising and programs of study.

A study of why students leave Stanislaus County high schools

Caldwell, Walter Treadway 01 January 1955 (has links)
The problem, source of data, and procedure. As a nation grows and the states that compose the nation develop and improve , it is quite natural that the leaders, especially tile loaders in education, become concerned if there are many of the youth leaving school before they have gained the knowledge to help them cope with the stress and strain of the world about them. The problem of the school drop-outs has been of concern to educators since the beginning of our secondary schools . In California this problem has increased with the tremendous influx of population and from all indications will continue to grow if steps are not taken by individual school districts to do something about it. It is necessary, therefore, to get information regarding local areas.
