Vliv globálních zpravodajských agentur na podobu zahraničních rubrik v českém periodickém tisku / Influence of Global News Agencies on the Form of Foreign News in Czech Daily Press

What effect do global news agencies have on foreign sections of Czech daily newspapers; that's the focus of this master thesis. The theoretical part of the thesis introduces two before-mentioned concepts of intermedia agenda-setting and globalization of news. Other theoretical concepts like gatekeeping, news values or media routine are also briefly presented. So are profiles of selected media outlets are also presented. Next part of the thesis introduces the reader to methodology upon which the research is based. The research itself is divided into two parts. The first one is a quantitative content analysis of ČTK's foreign news agenda during the specified period. The same analysis was also carried out for selected Czech daily newspapers. The research focused on several variables - what media sources are being used, what topics do the articles cover or who are the actors mentioned in the articles. The second part of the research focused on whether and on what scale do daily papers use texts provided by ČTK and if they're being used without adjustments. Main findings of the research with commentary are presented in the conclusion section of this thesis.

Diploma thesis "Comparison analyses of national newspaper supplements Salon, Kavarna and Orientace" analyses supplements of national, daily released newspapers: Pravo (Salon), Mlada fronta DNES (Kavarna) and Lidove noviny (Orientace). Essential methods used in this work are quantitative analysis, applied to specified moths during years 2006-2008, and chronological analysis of chosen issues during years 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2005. Based on them, various evaluations of supplement main characteristics, specific features and differences were observed. Most important characteristics investigated in the work are: supplement content and graphic conception, placement within the carrying newspaper, structure of published literature forms, themes and sub-themes. There can be also found summary of each supplement history, list of its typical authors and internet version description. Author of this thesis also introduced related overview of Czech literary and cultural magazines (Literarni noviny, Host, Divoke vino, Revolver Revue, Tvar nebo A2) and briefly stated profiles of main national newspapers. To gain supplement readers characteristics, approximate sociological questionnaire was processed among university students.

This diploma thesis describes an unexplored field of study - the medialization of the monetary separation and Czech koruna formation in February 1993. The thesis maps Czech media discourse devoted to this theme and answers the question whether the media, through its contents, could contribute to a positive perception and acceptance of this fundamental economic reform that actually completed the dissolution of Czechoslovakia process on January 1, 1993. For this purpose the thesis uses the qualitative research methods, the semiotic analysis and the discourse analysis. The introduction briefly outlines the sociopolitical situation in the country. The theoretical part describes the role of money and monetary policy, the technical preparation of the currency separation, including a new series of banknotes, and outlines Czech media trends after the 1989. The methodological part contains specific objectives, research questions and widely presents the selected research methods. The practical part analyzes media contents devoted to the currency separation in Czech newspapers Blesk (Flash), Hospodářské noviny (Economic Newspaper), MF Dnes (Today), Rudé právo (Red Law) and selected program of Česká televize (Czech Television) in the first quarter of the year 1993. Diploma thesis "Media image of China in Czech daily newspapers in the year of holding the 2008 Summer Olympic Games" tries to capture a media image of China in Czech daily newspapers represented by MF Dnes, Pravo and Hospodarske noviny. The analysed time period is the whole year 2008, the year of the Summer Olympic Games in Peking, when China got even into the biggest interest of media. The method of the diploma thesis is to examine chosen articles with quantitative content analysis which tries to answer the questions regarding the thematic agenda of the newspapers connected to China, originality of the stories or the positive or negative character of the articles in general. Last but not least the analysis takes into account the phenomenon of Olympic Games and the tense events around them which also brought its part of articles and topics. As the analysis deals with a trio of newspapers with various reader's profiles, it focuses on differences among them too.

The diploma thesis "Construction of Czech national identity in Czech print media: a qualitative analysis of Mladá fronta DNES and Právo daily newspapers in the years 1999 and 2004" is concerned with the media constructing of Czech national identity in the content of two significant Czech print dailies. The concrete period chosen for the analysis of the construction is from 1st until 31st March in 1999 and it involves the accession of the Czech Republic to NATO (12th March), in the year 2004 the period is from 19th April until 19th May and it contains the accession of the Czech Republic to the EU (1st May). The qualitative method is used for the study of the construction. It is dealt with as an interpretative analysis of the text. With the aid of the relevant literature the study analyzes and interprets the found constructions of Czech national identity. It examines what identity and character and which traditions and attributes are given to the Czech nation by selected newspapers. It notices potential differences and uniformities between both newspapers and between 1999 and 2004. The analytical part of the thesis is complemented by the theoretical part and the methodology.
