L’action des conseillers du roi de France dans le domaine artistique, et notamment architectural, au tournant des XIIIe et XIVe siècles, a été abordée dans le cadre d’études monographiques, mais n’a jamais été envisagée dans un souci de synthèse. Recenser les bâtiments et les œuvres d’art réalisés à l’initiative de ces individus dans l’ancien royaume de France, les confronter avec les entreprises et les commandes royales permet de comprendre les motivations et l’impact d’un milieu alors en plein essor, celui des grands officiers royaux et des hommes de confiance qui assistaient quotidiennement le roi et l’aidaient à gouverner. L’époque retenue couvre les règnes des derniers Capétiens, Philippe le Bel (1285-1314) et ses trois fils (1314-1328). Il a semblé souhaitable d’étendre l’étude en amont au règne de Philippe le Hardi (1270-1285), afin de prendre en compte les prémices d’un véritable phénomène, par ailleurs très diversifié : lancement de projets architecturaux de grande ampleur destinés à l’usage propre du conseiller et de sa famille, embellissement d’édifices existants, participation à de grands chantiers en cours (cathédrales), commandes de tombeaux, d’œuvres d’art destinées à orner des fondations pieuses, réalisation d’hôpitaux ou d’édifices utilitaires ; beaucoup d’exemples témoignent de l’ambition comme de la piété de ces hommes. Dans les textes mais également dans le paysage monumental français actuel, il a été possible de retrouver de nombreuses traces de cette action, dont une typologie a été établie. L’étude a pour but de répondre aux questions suivantes : les conseillers du roi partageaient-ils le même mode de vie et avaient-ils des goûts communs ? Leur action fut-elle en tout point semblable à celle des membres de la famille royale et de la haute noblesse ? Peut-on mesurer la portée de ces réalisations ? / The action of the councillors of the French king in the artistic domain, particularly architectural, at the turn of the XIIIth and XIVth centuries, aroused a large number of monographic studies, but has never been envisaged in a concern of synthesis. Listing buildings and works of art commissioned by these individuals in the realm of France, confronting them with those patronized by the king, let us understand the motivations and the influence of an environment then in full development, that of the royal officers who assisted the king and helped him to govern. The chosen period covers the reigns of the last Capetians, Philip the Fair (1285-1314) and his three sons (1314-1328). It seemed worthwhile to widen the study area to include the reign of Philip the Bold (1270-1285) in order to take into account the beginnings of the phenomenon, besides very diversified : launch of large-scale architectural projects intended for the councillor and his family, embellishment of existing buildings (like cathedrals), production of gravestones, execution of works of art made to “decorate” pious foundations, construction of hospitals or utilitarian buildings ; many examples show the ambition as the devotion of these men. In texts but also in current French architectural landscape, it has been possible to find numerous traces of this action, a typology of which has been proposed. The study aims at answering the following questions : did the king’s councillors share the same lifestyle, the same tastes ? Was their action completely similar to that of the members of the royal family and the nobility ? Can we measure the reach of these creations ?

Gegenstand der Arbeit sind Darstellungen, die dem Umfeld zweier Heiligenkulte in Florenz angehören und auf Bestellungen der Medici, ihrer Freunde und Verbündeten zurückzuführen sind. Den ursprünglich römischen Kult seiner Namenspatrone, der hll. Cosmas und Damian hat erst Cosimo de’ Medici in Florenz bekannt gemacht. Dabei erwies sich das Fehlen einer nennenswerten Florentinischen Tradition als maßgeblicher Faktor seiner Wirkkraft. Fra’ Angelico, Filippo Lippi und andere Künstler konnten formal neuartige Bildlösungen entwickeln, deren Inhalte sich als Projektionsflächen der politischen und geistigen Florentiner Eliten eigneten. Cosimo etablierte auf diese Weise ein Netzwerk persönlicher Repräsentation, das nicht allein die Barriere zwischen privatem und öffentlichem Raum zu durchdringen vermochte, sondern auch demonstrativ über die in Florenz herkömmliche Beschränkung auf das eigene Stadtviertel hinausgriff. Mit dem Generationswechsel nach Cosimos Tod erforderten die veränderten Machtverhältnisse auch einen Wechsel in der Strategie des Kults. In der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts tritt ein anderer Kult, jener der hll. Drei Könige in den Vordergrund. Dieser besaß im Gegensatz zur Verehrung von Cosmas und Damian in Florenz eine eigenständige, spezifisch republikanische Tradition. Unter deren Schutz konnte eine kontinuierliche Politisierung althergebrachter Rituale und die Übernahme der Kontrolle durch die Medici stattfinden. Auch in diesem Fall zeigt die Analyse der erhaltenen Darstellungen, dass sie den Auftraggebern als Loyalitätsnachweis dienten und die Zugehörigkeit zum Klientel der Medici und damit der städtischen Eliten markierten. Noch in der Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts griff Herzog Cosimo I. auf strategische Elemente und Motive des Kults zurück, nun zunehmend aus dem sakralen Kontext gelöst und Bestandteil höfischer Panegyrik. / The Images observed here are mainly of two religious cults commissioned by members, friends and allies of the Medici family. In the early 15th century Cosimo de’ Medici following the example of his father introduced his patron saints, Cosmas and Damian into his native city of Florence. Prior to this the cult of these saints was of no vital importance outside Rome. Thus there was no eminent pictorial tradition of their images which proved an important factor in the cult’s success. Fra’ Angelico, Filippo Lippi and other artists were able to develop a new imagery that allowed members of Florence’s political and humanistic circles to identify with. Cosimo established a network of personal representation which did not only penetrate the barriers between private and public space but ostentatiously reached beyond the customary boundaries of a family’s home quarter. After Cosimo’s death in 1464 political instability resulted in a change of strategy. In the second half of the 15th century a different cult, that of the Three Magi, moves into the center of medicean interest. Contrary to Saints Cosmas and Damian the cult of the Magi had an ancient and marked republican tradition in Florence. Under cover of this tradition the Medici party managed to take over control of the confraternity of the Magi and wield its influential instruments to their own benefit. As with images of Saints Cosmas and Damian those depicting the Adoration of the Magi were used as a confirmation of loyalty to the Medici and their faction. Even in the 16th century Duke Cosimo I. went back to elements and motifs of his predecessors’ strategy. Rather than reviving the cult of Saints Cosmas and Damian however they are used to give evidence of political and dynastical continuity.

La tesi riguarda la Seconda Lega ateniese, di cui si studia il periodo, solitamente trascurato, compreso tra la fine della Guerra Sociale (355/4 a.C.) e la sconfitta di Atene a Cheronea (338 a.C.). Fonti principali, come del resto per il periodo precedente, sono le iscrizioni. Vengono quindi analizzate, in ordine geografico e cronologico, diciassette epigrafi di interesse storico (per lo più iscrizioni onorarie e trattati), considerate utili nella ricostruzione delle modalità di intervento ateniese all’interno della Lega. Area geografica privilegiata è la Grecia settentrionale, più immediatamente a contatto con l’espansionismo macedone. Obiettivo della tesi è infatti chiarire se la storia della Lega navale, più che una progressiva perdita di significato, non metta in evidenza un costante e coerente riorientamento degli obiettivi, stimolata dal confronto con Filippo II di Macedonia. / The topic of this thesis is the Second Athenian League during its final, usually underrated period, namely between the end of the Social War (355/4 B.C.) and the Athenian defeat at Chaeronea (338 B.C.). The sources for the history of the League both before and after the Social War are mainly epigraphical. Accordingly, seventeen historical inscriptions are carefully examined and thoroughly commented on: these are mostly honorific decrees and treaties, all of which proved to be useful to investigate how Athens acted within its League. The study, focusing on Northern Greece as the latter became more and more endangered by the growing power of Macedon, tries to ascertain whether the history of the Second Athenian League, far from becoming meaningless, might show a steady and consistent reorientation of its tasks, in and because of the military confrontation with Philip II.

Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / My dissertation examines the ethical engagement of political invective poetry in thirteenth- and fourteenth-century Italy. Modern criticism tends to treat medieval invective as a playfully subversive but marginal poetic game with minimal ethical weight. Instead, I aim to restore these poetic productions to their original context: the history, law, and custom of Tuscan cities. This contexts allows me to explore how humor and fury, in the denunciation of political enemies, interact to establish not a game but an ethics of invective. I treat ethics as both theoretical and practical, referring to Aristotle, Cicero, and Brunetto Latini, and define ethics as the pursuit of the common good in a defined community. Chapter I introduces the corpus, its historical and cultural background, its critical reception, and my approach. Chapter II discusses medieval invective in Tuscany and surveys the cultural practice of invective writing. Chapter III approaches invectives written by Rustico Filippi during the Guelph and Ghibelline wars. Chapter IV explores invectives by Cecco Angiolieri set in Siena, which polemicize with the Sienese government and citizenry. Chapter V examines invectives in Dante's Commedia (Inf. 19, Purg. 6, and Par. 27), focusing on his unexpected humor and his critique of the papacy, the empire, and Italian city governments. My conclusion examines the ethical function of slanderous wit in wartime invective. These poems balance verbal aggression with humor, claiming a role for laughter in creating dialogue within conflict. Far from a stylistic or ludic exercise, each invective shows the poet's activism and ethical engagement.
