Finite Element Modeling and Multivariate Optimization Over Fibre Orientation and Volume Fraction of Fibre Composite Parts Aimed at Minimizing Targeted Displacements

A software program was written that implements a finite element analysis (FEA) solution as the basis of an optimization function used for guiding the inverse design problem of aligning fibres, minimizing displacements in a fibre-reinforced polymer composite part in response to a given loading condition, for various part geometries. The FEA solution makes use of the superlinear RGNTet4 element, which includes 3 displacement and 3 rotational degrees of freedom at 4 nodes. Convergence testing verified the accuracy of the solver versus symbolic results for simple cases. Multivariate optimization over fibre orientations and volume fractions was carried out for a simple test case using the NLOpt nonlinear optimization library. Both derivative-free and gradient-based algorithms were tested. Low-Storage Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shannon was the most effective algorithm. Four more complex cases were examined, and by varying fibre orientations, reductions of 48%, 66%, 58% and 32% were achieved in displacements at the loaded nodes.

Topological arrangement of nodes in wireless networks suitable for the implementation of network coding / F.J. Böning

Network coding refers to the implementation of coding methods to utilize network connections more efficiently. Network coding is commonly researched in the information theory field, but very little research is being done on the physical implementation thereof. One exception is COPE where network coding is implemented in wireless networks for unicast transmission sessions. In this dissertation, we discuss the physical arrangement of wireless nodes to form topologies suitable for the implementation of network coding. We implement linear network coding in wireless ad hoc networks for multicast transmission sessions. We calculate the areas in which each wireless node must be located for a specific network coding suitable topology to be formed. The identified topologies are simulated in OPNET Modeler and then implemented on a six node testbed, to analyse the effect of implementing network coding in these topologies. We provide results indicating the trade-off between reduced network load and higher end-to-end delay when our developed network coding algorithm is active in the respective topologies. The results indicate that the developed network coding scheme will produce better overall performance when implemented in sensor networks or highly congested ad hoc networks. / Thesis (M.Ing. Implementation Of Mesh Generation Algorithms

In this thesis, three mesh generation software packages have been developed and implemented. The first two were based on structured mesh generation algorithms and used to solve structured surface and volume mesh generation problems of three-dimensional domains. Structured mesh generation algorithms were based on the concept of isoparametric coordinates. In structured surface mesh generation software, quadrilateral mesh elements were generated for complex three-dimensional surfaces and these elements were then triangulated in order to obtain high-quality triangular mesh elements. Structured volume mesh generation software was used to generate hexahedral mesh elements for volumes. Tetrahedral mesh elements were constructed from hexahedral elements using hexahedral node insertion method. The results, which were produced by the mesh generation algorithms, were converted to a required format in order to be saved in output files. The third software package is an unstructured quality tetrahedral mesh generator and was used to generate exact Delaunay tetrahedralizations, constrained (conforming) Delaunay tetrahedralizations and quality conforming Delaunay tetrahedralizations. Apart from the mesh generation algorithms used and implemented in this thesis, unstructured mesh generation techniques that can be used to generate quadrilateral, triangular, hexahedral and tetrahedral mesh elements were also discussed.

Optimization Of Selection Conditions And Agrobacterium Mediated Transformation Of Chickpea (cicer Arietinum L. Cv. Gokce)

The objective of this study was to optimize an efficient selection system and Agrobacterium mediated transformation of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.). Cotyledonary node explants of Turkish chickpea cultivar G&ouml / k&ccedil / e were used to determine the effects of selective agents, two antibiotics (Kanamycin, Hygromycin) and two herbicides (PPT, Glyphosate) as well as four antibiotics (Augmentin, Carbenicillin, Cefotaxime, Timentin) for eliminating Agrobacterium on multiple shoot and root induction. Selective agents and antibiotics were applied to explants at different concentrations for one month and numbers of regenerated shoots and roots were recorded. Kanamycin at 100 mg/L, Hygromycin at 20 mg/L, PPT at 3 mg/L and Glyphosate at 5 mg/L were found to be appropriate to select chickpea transformants. Lowest concentrations of all selective agents (50 mg/L Kanamycin, 10 mg/L Hygromycin, 3 mg/L PPT, 1 mg/L Glyphosate) totally inhibited rooting of the regenerated shoots. Among the Agrobacterium-eliminating antibiotics, Cefotaxime and Augmentin each up to 600 mg/L had no adverse effect on shoot induction, whereas Timentin (300 mg/L) significantly increased and Carbenicillin (300 mg/L) significantly decreased shoot induction after four weeks of culture. Augmentin was determined to have no effect on rooting capacities of chickpea shoots. However Cefotaxime at all concentrations significantly decreased root induction. On the other hand only high concentrations of Carbenicillin (300 mg/L) and Timentin (200 mg/L) significantly decreased rooting. Sulbactam in combination with Carbenicillin and Cefotaxime displayed effective inhibition of bacterial growth. Furthermore, Agrobacterium mediated transformation procedure for cotyledonary node explants of G&ouml / k&ccedil / e, was also optimized by monitoring transient uidA expression on 4th, 9th, and 16th days after transformation. Transformation procedure was improved via mechanical injury of axillary region of explants and application of vacuum infiltration at 200 mmHg for 40 minutes.

Characterisation of the substrate of atrial fibrillation and flutter.

Atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter are the most common sustained arrhythmias, however their underlying mechanisms are yet to be fully characterised. This thesis evaluates the electrophysiological and electroanatomical substrate of the atria in patients with these arrhythmias. Experimental studies of atrial fibrillation have demonstrated effective refractory period shortening and conduction slowing as a result of atrial fibrillation giving rise to the concept that "atrial fibrillation begets atrial fibrillation". However, cardioversion to prevent electrical remodelling does not prevent progression of disease, suggesting a "second factor" drives this process. Chapters 2 and 3 evaluate the atrial substrate in patients with "lone" atrial fibrillation. These studies demonstrate such patients, remote from an arrhythmic event, have prolongation of atrial refractoriness, conduction slowing, impairment of sinus node function, site-specific conduction delay, lower voltage and a greater proportion of complex electrograms compared to reference patients. These abnormalities constitute the "second factor" critical to the development and progression of atrial fibrillation. Atrial flutter has a close inter-relationship with atrial fibrillation and these rhythms frequently co-exist. Atrial fibrillation often occurs in patients with heart disease known to demonstrate abnormal atrial substrate; whether similar substrate exists in patients with atrial flutter to account for the co-existence of both arrhythmias is unknown. Chapters 4 and 5 evaluate the atrial substrate in patients with atrial flutter, remote from arrhythmia, demonstrating structural abnormalities characterised by loss of myocardial voltage, conduction slowing and impaired sinus node function, without reduction in atrial refractoriness. These findings implicate a common substrate as the cause of the close inter-relationship between these arrhythmias. There is a frequent association between atrial arrhythmia and sinus node disease for which several mechanisms have been postulated. In addition, there is a size discrepancy between the anatomical sinus node and the much larger functional sinus node complex. little is known about normal sinus node function or the effects of remodelling due to arrhythmia. Chapter 6 characterises sinus node activation to determine the nature and extent of the functional sinus node complex in patients with and without chronic atrial flutter. The functional sinus node complex demonstrates dynamic shifts in activation with preferential pathways of conduction to atrial myocardium. Patients with atrial flutter demonstrate lesser voltage, longer conduction times along preferential pathways and a smaller functional sinus node complex. These findings provide insights into the function of the human sinus node in health and disease. Sites of complex fractionated atrial electrograms and highest dominant frequency are implicated in maintaining atrial fibrillation. Chapter 7 determines the minimum recording duration that accurately characterises electrogram complexity and activation frequency. An electrogram duration of 5 seconds is required to accurately identify these sites. Chapter 8 evaluates the relationship between sites of fractionation and high frequency activation during atrial fibrillation. Greater fractionation and higher dominant frequency are seen in persistent atrial fibrillation and left atria. Preferential areas of high dominant frequency are observed in paroxysmal but not persistent atrial fibrillation. O estudo apresenta uma análise dos fios/vazios que se traçam na elaboração da fanpage Diário de Classe: a verdade, criada pela adolescente Isadora Faber. A página, que tornou-se manchete em diferentes canais midiáticos, apresenta denúncias sobre a situação de precariedade de algumas instalações que a escola Maria Tomázia Coelho, localizada na cidade de Florianópolis em Santa Catarina, apresentava. Desta forma, o objetivo deste trabalho está em investigar de que maneira a página em questão tornou-se um fenômeno na grande rede a partir das publicações realizadas por Isadora Faber. Para a realização da pesquisa baseamo-nos na entrevista cedida pela autora da página, de algumas reportagens publicadas online e de uma análise exploratória do corpo da fanpage. O trabalho apresenta apontamentos que retratam inicialmente de que maneira as novas Tecnologias de Informação e Comunicação estão inseridas em nossas vidas e em especial, na escola, tratando o tema como uma expressão que vem sendo abordada como uma ideia de impacto, todavia. A abordagem rede/nós e vazio/furo foram trabalhados de maneira a estabelecermos um paralelo entre os termos e delinearmos nossa metodologia de estudo, então. The page, which became headlines in different media channels, shows deletions about the precarious situation of some installations that Maria Tomázia Coelho, located in Florianopolis in Santa Catarina, presented. Thus, the objective of this study is to investigate how this page became a fenomenous on the Internet by the publications made. For the research we based on the interview given by the author of the page, online published reports and an analysis of the fanpages body. The paper presents notes that initially shows how the new Information and Communication Technologies are introduced in our lives and especially at school, treating the subject as an expression that has been treated as an idea of the impact, however. The approach wire/ node and empty/hole were worked out in order to establish a parallel between the terms and delineate our study methodology, then. In a third step, the post-massive and massive terms of communication were treated in this study as a way of understanding what it would configure its features and a relationship that the first establishes with the second. The considerations of the study, then, indicates other holes and that will be set by the reader of this text, however.

An analysis of voice over internet protocol in wireless mesh networks

Magister Scientiae - MSc / This thesis presents an analysis of the impact of node mobility on the quality of service for voice over Internet Protocol in wireless mesh networks. Voice traffic was simulated on such a mesh network to analyze the following performance metrics: delay, jitter, packet loss and throughput. Wireless mesh networks present interesting characteristics such as multi-hop routing, node mobility, and variable coverage that can impact on quality of service. A reasonable deployment scenario for a small organizational network, for either urban or rural deployment, is considered with three wireless mesh network scenarios, each with 26 mesh nodes. In the first scenario, all mesh nodes are stationary. In the second scenario, 10 nodes are mobile and 16 nodes are stationary. Finally, in the third scenario, all mesh nodes are mobile. The mesh nodes are simulated to move at a walking speed of 1.3m per second. The results show that node mobility can increase packet loss, delay, and jitter. However, the results also show that wireless mesh networks can provide acceptable quality of service, providing that there is little or no background traffic generated by other applications. In particular, the results demonstrate that jitter across all scenarios remains within humanacceptable tolerances. It is therefore recommended that voice over Internet Protocol implementations on wireless mesh networks with background traffic be supported by quality of service standards; otherwise they can lead to service delivery failures. On the other hand, voice-only esh networks, even with mobile nodes, offer an attractive alternative voice over Internet Protocol platform. / South Africa

Design and Implementation of Realistic and Terrain-aware Mobile Sensor Networks

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been used in many applications by deploying tiny and stationary sensors. In recent years, a lot of studies proposed to introduce mobility capability to sensor nodes in order to exploit the advantages of mobility, particularly to restore connectivity in disjoint WSNs. While the studies demonstrated various capabilities of the proposed connectivity algorithms via simulation, real node and testbed implementations were mostly lacking due to unavailability of proper mobile nodes. Since this may hinder the direct applicability of the algorithms in realistic settings, testbeds which can be constructed with low-cost and commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware are required for realistic evaluations of the connectivity restoration algorithms. In this thesis, we design a low-cost mobile sensor node called iRobotSense, by integrating iRobot Create platform with IRIS sensor. Then, a mobile sensor network (MSN) testbed of iRobotSense nodes is used to implement and evaluate a widely used connectivity restoration algorithms, namely PADRA. Furthermore, all of the previous works exploiting mobility of the nodes to achieve recovery in a partitioned network have assumed reachability of the nodes to the selected destinations via a direct path movement. However, in real-world applications, such assumption makes the schemes impractical in case of encountering obstacles or intolerable terrains. Besides, even if direct path movement is successful, optimal energy efficiency cannot be attained by neglecting the elevation or friction of the terrain. Thus, in the recovery efforts, terrain type, elevation as well as the obstacles should be taken into account. In this thesis, we re-design an existing connectivity restoration approach in disjoint MSNs to fit these requirements and evaluate the performance issues when realistic terrains are assumed. Rather than following a direct path, movement trajectory is determined based on a path planning algorithm which considers the risk and elevation of terrain sections to be visited while avoiding obstacles and highly elevated terrain sections.
