Turn: Essays on Growing Up

Rice, Lauren R. 22 May 2006 (has links)
Turn is a collection of personal essays that loosely focus on what it means to become an adult. The topics of the essays range from crushes to dog walking, from weddings to working at a New Orleans snoball stand. The essays deal with how much more complicated the world turned out to be than as a child I expected.

Edel, Magnus January 2008 (has links)
This essay examines the public debate concerning the unemployment of Sweden just before the general election 2005. Its main purpose is to analyse what lies behind the huge differences in statistics, as presented by the two leading factions in the debate. It concludes that these differences are foremost a problem of semantics, and that although the two factions have statistical proof of their claims, it is their use of terminology that is in fact their main weapon in the debate. The key word here is the swedish word for employment – sysselsättning – which the two facitons use in entirely different ways, creating a lot of possabilities for interpretation. This has caused a type of debate which is actually about the reinterpretation this word, and those who are to be included in the statistics as being “sysselsatt”, therefore, it is semantics that affects the number of unemployed people in the statistics.

Art in parallax: painting, place, judgment

Akenson, David J. January 2008 (has links)
[Abstract]The point of this thesis is to undertake a critical engagement with the art and life debate. This debate involves, in particular, the question of the location of art. Does art belong to an autonomous field removed from ‘everyday life’, or is art located amongst the objects and daily activities of our lives? Contributors to this debate usually defend one or the other position; either defending autonomy or arguing that art is, or at least should be, part of life. The debate is located through three historical points: the avant-gardes of the early 20th Century Europe; the neo-avant-garde of North America in the 1950s – 1970s; and American formalist art and criticism of the 1930s – 1970s. The thesis then engages the debate through more recent examples of art where the binary art/life is again the principal issue. Minimalism, Installation art, Site-specific art and Wall Painting are examined in the context of the ‘end’ of modernist painting. The argument presented by the thesis will be informed by a recently emerging theoretical frame which engages the reception of Kantian and Hegelian forms of aesthetic judgment. This critical context includes the Slovenian philosopher, Slavoj Zizek; the Marxist-Hegelian theory of the German critic, Peter Burger, and the U.S. formalist critic, Clement Greenberg. The positions held by these theorists and critics will be examined through examples of art from both the modern period and more contemporary works. Through this context, the thesis positions the art and life debate within a structural analysis, arguing that art, including objects of ordinary life understood as art, occupy places within an art structure. The thesis argues that the choice between art and life is not so much a positive choice of one or the other, but rather a choice between one and the same thing seen differently; that is, the one thing seen in parallax.

Araujo Ventura, Karla Fiorella January 2016 (has links)
It is expected that the debate will be over the next few years one of the most important legal skills in Latin America, achieving become a highly effective tool for critical thinking; generating various tools for the development of argumentation and discursive logic, thus achieving a more holistic profile Law students, which responds to the new demands of the professional world. Many formats have been proposed in the literature to provide a discussion program. Of the proposed schemes, one of the most useful to implement, Karl Popper format and the British MP, the first places students into two teams of three members each, who have to investigate both the pro and the position contrary to a particular question, emphasizing the development of critical thinking skills; while the second, involving four teams of two members each, two teams defend certain position on the issue, while the other two teams, the opposite. Both develop research skills, teamwork, strategy design, oral and body language. "Education, debate and legal skills" is an innovative research that examines the effectiveness of the debate on critical thinking, for it opening a program for students of the fourth cycle of the Faculty of Law of the Continental University in the period 2015-II, in order to provide different tools of argumentation, communication and research for further oral arguments on issues of great legal significance. In order to analyze what effect the discussion on critical thinking of these students, the test Santiuste Bermejo (2001) is used, and the results are compared and analyzed. Thus, it is determined that the: "Debate and Legal Skills" program operates significantly in the experimental group, raising the level of critical thinking, communication skills and legal skills, while in the control group, results are shown without any variation considerable. / Tesis

Ortiz Esaine, Nicolás M., Chocce Silva, Marlene E. 12 1900 (has links)
This article deals with the importance of developing creative competencies in business sciences professionals, specifically marketing. It seeks to show the scope and advantages found in the development of lateral thinking so as to achieve a more empathetic relationship between business managers and their target audiences within a globalized economic context requiring greater personalization and social emphasis on corporate actions. This all is addressed from the parallel experience in creative and business schools, with the new approaches in business planning based on lateral, iterative, and cooperative thinking exercises as a starting point, and existing innovations as an example. The goal is to generate model proposals that can be integrated into the curriculums, and can shorten the gaps expressed today by independent business schools as opposed to the typical university academic model, and also to provide for the generational gaps existing in new consumers.

Loguercio, Edgardo Alfredo 09 November 2007 (has links)
Pan-americanismo versus Latino-americanismo. / Panamericanismo versus Latinoamericanismo.
