Os Adelfos de Terêncio: estudo e tradução / The Adelphoe of Terence: study and translation

Zanfra, Marcello Peres 23 August 2018 (has links)
The present work consists of the study and annotated translation into Brazilian Portuguese prose of the comedy Adelphoe, or The Brothers, written and adapted by Publius Terentius Afer in 160 BC. The first part of the dissertation, which contains the study, makes an overview of the main questions about the works of Terence, the author and the genre of the fabulla palliata. It also integrates an analysis of the major part of the comedys verses, pointing out poetic features and the plot and character construction. Guides our study the perception of how the resource of deceptive discourse is manipulated by the author, who makes it a foundation of comedy, a comic artifice, an element of construction of the ethos of the caracteres and a condition to the existence and development of the plot. We show how the deceptive discourse assists an understanding of the final plot that so much discussion generates among critics, showing that Adelphoe is not a philosophical treatise but a comedy with vicious characters whose whims are at the heart of the conflict. The prose translation tries to construct an equivalence with the text of Terrence with respect to the simple but elegant style, and exploring the resources of language manipulated by the poet. The footnotes clarify context elements of the play, indicate figures of language and meaning and justify translation choices.

Deceptive movement in rugby : biomechanical determinants, detection process and action : why expert is better ?

Brault, Sébastien 25 November 2011 (has links)
This work comes from several observations. First, it is now accepted that the ability to pick up and attend to the most relevant visual information from an opponent action is a determinant of performance and even more so if the action is uncertain and deceptive. The second observation, deriving from the first, is that deception is put into play in many human interactions, and it is particularly crucial in sports strategies. Finally the last observation is that exploration of athletic performance, for methodological or theoretical reasons, can’t explain, in certain cases, why an expert is better than a novice. The aim of our work is to understand these determinants (perception and action) of expertise in a 1 vs. 1 duel in rugby, presenting an attempt of deceptive movement by the attacker. We summarize this work in three specific questions we answer: How to make a deceptive movement? How to detect a deceptive movement? How to answer to a deceptive movement? The first study aims to analyse the biomechanical differences between a movement with a simple changeof direction and a deceptive movement in rugby. The second study, using virtual reality, links the prospective information of the attacker’s movement and the decision making of the rugby defender (expert or novice). Finally, based on a quasi-similar methodology, the third study immerses the participants in a situation requiring a complete action of defence, allowing us to explore the perception and action strategies of the participants. This whole process allows us to demonstrate the effectof expertise but also to explain why experts are better by drawing up the differences characterizing them in terms of perception and action strategies. If the implications mainly concern the field of rugby (basic knowledge and training), they are also of great interest for any interaction, human or animal, involving deception. We are convinced, a predatory animal, apoker player, a defender of basketball ... must present similar strategies to detect the deceptive intention of an opponent

How to Place Products Without the Use of Product Placement : "If You Notice, It's Bad. But If You Don't , It's Worthless"

Jinnemo, Marie, Pettersson, Sandra January 2011 (has links)
Purpose: The thesis will contribute to an understanding of how the process of product placement functions and how the new Swedish Radio and Television law has, so far, influenced the different parties involved in the product placement process. The thesis will also give an insight in how the different parties involved , handle the ethical issues around product placement and product placement with alcoholic beverages. The purpose is also to give an understanding of if and how alcoholic beverages can be exposed in television despite the new conditions that the Swedish Radio and Television law has caused. Research questions: What impact has the new Swedish Radio and Television law had on the different parties involved in the product placement process? How do the different parties involved in the product placement process reflect upon and handle the ethical issues around product placement, specifically with alcoholic beverages? How do comapnies working with alcoholic beverages manage to place their products in Swedish television within the new law regulation? Method: The primary empirical investigation is qualitative and seventeen semi-structured interviews were conducted, both by telephone and personal. There were also four focus groups made. Conclusion: The interpretation of the law is different between the parties involved in a product placement process. Even though the parties have a clearer picture of what is defined as product placement , what is allowed and not, there are still differences about how to apply the law. The different parties involved did not have any major ethical issues with product placement in general or product placement with alcoholic beverages. Companies working woth alcoholic beverages manage to show their products in television, though it is illegal to place these products. After the study, it was evident that they instead chosse to sponsor with their products in different productions. The consumer have not been affected by the new law due to their lack of knowledge about the regulations about product placement.

Gene Reordering And Concurrency In Genetic Algorithms

Sehitoglu, Onur Tolga 01 August 2002 (has links) (PDF)
This study first introduces an order-free chromosome encoding to enhance the performance of genetic algorithms by learning the linkage of building blocks in non-binary encodings. The method introduces a measure called affinity which is based on the statistical properties of gene valuations in the population. It uses the affinity values of the local and global gene pairs to construct a global permutation with tight building block positioning. Method is tested and experimental results are shown for a group of deceptive and real life test problems. Then, study proposes a gene level concurrency model where each gene position is implemented on a different process. This combines the advantages of implicit parallelism and a chromosome structure free approach. It also helps implementation of gene reordering method introduced and probably other non-linear chromosome encodings.

Detecting Fake Reviews with Machine Learning

Ferreira Uchoa, Marina January 2018 (has links)
Many individuals and businesses make decisions based on freely and easily accessible online reviews. This provides incentives for the dissemination of fake reviews, which aim to deceive the reader into having undeserved positive or negative opinions about an establishment or service. With that in mind, this work proposes machine learning applications to detect fake online reviews from hotel, restaurant and doctor domains. In order to _lter these deceptive reviews, Neural Networks and Support Vector Ma- chines are used. Both algorithms' parameters are optimized during training. Parameters that result in the highest accuracy for each data and feature set combination are selected for testing. As input features for both machine learning applications, unigrams, bigrams and the combination of both are used. The advantage of the proposed approach is that the models are simple yet yield results comparable with those found in the literature using more complex models. The highest accuracy achieved was with Support Vector Machine using the Laplacian kernel which obtained an accuracy of 82.92% for hotel, 80.83% for restaurant and 73.33% for doctor reviews.

The Impact of Visceral Influences on Consumers' Evaluation of Weight Loss Advertising

Amos, Clinton L. 05 1900 (has links)
The weight loss industry has come under fire from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in recent years due to consumer claims that many firms, marketing weight loss products, are using advertisements in an attempt to deceive consumers. Illegitimate weight loss claims have created so much concern that a White Paper call-to-action to investigate misleading weight loss advertisements has been filed. Despite recent interest, little attention has been garnered concerning the understanding of why consumers respond to potentially misleading weight loss claims. Intuitively, an understanding of why consumers fall prey to weight loss claims may aid academics, practitioners, and policy makers as they make important decisions relative to the weight loss industry and its practices. This study fills that void by applying a theory of visceral influences (TVI) to the context of weight loss advertising. Loewenstein's TVI was developed to aid in explaining why consumers make decisions contrary to their long-term self-interest. Visceral influences are drive states that have a direct hedonic impact, have an effect on the relative desirability of various goods and activities, and consequently, have a strong influence over the decisions consumers make. Common visceral cues (cues associated with any reward linked to a visceral factor) include proximity of reward, vividness of reward, and visual priming. To adequately test TVI in the context of weight loss advertising, a two step approach was used. First, advertiser intent was assessed through content analysis of weight loss advertisements. Second, composite advertisements were created from the content analysis to assess subject response to visceral cues common in weight loss advertising. MANOVA results show that the presence of visceral cues affected subjects' thoughts, buying impulse, affective reaction, intentions, and product evaluation. This research makes the following contributions. First, it addresses an area of public policy where there is a need for research to shape future legislation. Second, it provides an initial empirical examination of the effects of visceral cues on subjects' providing a foundation for further application and theory building. Third, it reveals that visceral cues effects are moderated by an individual's level of involvement with a reward.
