Evaluating and improving collection tree protocol in mobile wireless sensor network

There has been growing interest in the Mobile WSN applications where mobility is the fundamental characteristic of the sensor nodes. Mobility poses many challenges to the routing protocols used in such applications. In this thesis we evaluate the performance of Collection Tree Protocol as applied in mobile WSN scenarios. The simulation study shows CTP performs poorly in mobile scenario because of the frequent tree re-generation resulting from node movements. We compare Collection Tree Protocol with reactive ad hoc network routing protocols. The simulation results show that collection tree protocol performs better than reactive MANET protocols in terms of data delivery ratio and control overhead under low traffic rates. The end-to-end delay obtained in case of reactive protocols is also higher compared to that obtained when using CTP, which is due to their route discovery process. This thesis presents an improved data collection protocol Fixed Node Aided CTP based on the analysis of CTP. The protocol introduces the concept of fixed aided routing into CTP. It is shown that our enhanced CTP outperforms CTP in terms of data delivery ratio and control overhead chosen as performance metrics. / UOIT

Poster: Investigating Doppler Effects on Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication: An Experimental Study

Doppler effects on vehicular communication have been theoretically modeled by many researchers. However, very limited experimental studies have been conducted to investigate the impact of Doppler shift on the vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication range and reliability with high speed mobility. The current work-in-progress research aims to quantify the impact of Doppler effects on V2V communication reliability, range, and reachability using singlehop Dedicated Short Range communications (DSRC) between two opposite traffic. We conducted our experiments by mounting the after-market DSRC on-board units on the dashboard of two vehicles that cross each other from opposite directions with constant relative speeds on a real interstate freeway. Our preliminary results indicate that the communication time and range drop to approximately 70% and 40% after the two vehicles cross and start moving away from each other with the average relative speeds of 110 and 140 mph, respectively. Similarly, the packet delivery ratio is also drastically reduced after the vehicles start moving away from each other. Apparently, these results indicate that there might be a strong effect of Doppler phenomena on the transmission range, packet delivery rate and the duration of the communication.

Performance Evaluation of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks in Realistic Mobility and Fading Environments

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are wireless networks, which consist of a collection of mobile nodes with no fixed infrastructure, where each node acts as a router that participates in forwarding data packets. They are a new paradigm of wireless communications for mobile hosts that are resource-constrained with only limited energy, computing power and memory. Previous studies on MANETs concentrated more on energy conservation in an idealistic environment without taking into consideration, the effects of realistic mobility, interference and fading. The definition of realistic mobility models is one of the most critical and, at the same time, difficult aspects of the simulations of networks designed for real mobile ad hoc environments. The reason for this is that most scenarios for which ad hoc networks are used have features such as dynamicity and extreme uncertainties. Thus use of real life measurements is currently almost impossible and most certainly expensive. Hence the commonly used alternative is to simulate the movement patterns and hence the reproduction of movement traces quite similar to human mobility behavior is extremely important. The synthetic models used for movement pattern generation should reflect the movement of the real mobile devices, which are usually carried by humans, so the movement of such devices is necessarily based on human decisions. Regularity is an important characteristic of human movement patterns. All simulated movement models are suspect because there is no means of accessing to what extent they map reality. However it is not difficult to see that random mobility models such as Random Walk, Random Waypoint (default model used in almost all network simulations), etc., generate movements that are most non-humanlike. Hence we need to focus on more realistic mobility models such as Gauss Markov, Manhattan Grid, Reference Point Group Mobility Model (RPGM), Column, Pursue and other Hybrid mobility models. These models capture certain mobility characteristics that emulate the realistic MANETs movement, such as temporal dependency, spatial dependency and geographic restriction. Also a Rayleigh/Ricean fading channel is introduced to obtain a realistic fading environment. The energy consumed by the data, MAC, ARP and RTR packets using IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol with the various mobility models in fading and non-fading channel conditions are obtained using ns-2 simulations and AWK programs. The realistic movement patterns are generated using three different mobility generators BonnMotion Mobility Generator, Toilers Code and Scengen Mobility Generator. This thesis work performs an in-depth study on th eeffects of realistic mobility and fading on energy consumption, packet delivery ratio and control overhead of MANETs.

The size of the IoT network is expanding due to advancements in the IoT field, leading to increased interest in the multi-sink mechanism. The IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) is a representative IoT protocol that focuses on the Low-Power and Lossy Networks. However, research on comparing multi-sink strategies within the RPL network is limited. Therefore, this project aims to compare three common strategies: multiple-DODAG in one instance, virtual root, and multiple-instance. Using these strategies, we design and implement RPL networks and conduct simulations in various scenarios. Five different topologies are utilized in the experiments, considering different packet loss rates. Performance evaluation of each strategy is conducted using the Cooja simulator and Contiki-NG system, with a focus on the number of RPL control packets, Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR), and energy consumption. The results indicate that both the virtual root and multiple-DODAG strategies perform well with low packet loss, while the virtual root strategy outperforms the multiple-DODAG strategy with high packet loss. Additionally, the virtual root strategy incurs slightly higher energy costs than the multiple-DODAG strategy. Furthermore, the multiple-instance strategy demonstrates poor performance in most scenarios, except for the packet delivery ratio under high packet loss conditions. Besides the analysis, potential areas for future research on the RPL’s multi-sink mechanism are finally identified. / Storleken på IoT-nätverket expanderar på grund av framsteg inom IoT-området, vilket leder till ökat intresse för multi-sink-mekanismen. IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-Power and Lossy Networks (RPL) är ett representativt IoT-protokoll som fokuserar på Nät med låg effekt och förluster. Forskningen om jämförelse av multi-sink-strategier inom RPL-nätverket är dock begränsad. Därför syftar detta projekt till att jämföra tre vanliga strategier: multiple - DODAG i en instans, virtuell rot och multi-instans. Med hjälp av dessa strategier designar och implementerar vi RPL-nätverk och genomför simuleringar i olika scenarier. Fem olika topologier används i experimenten, med olika packet loss rate. Prestationsutvärdering av varje strategi utförs med hjälp av Cooja-simulatorn och Contiki-NG-systemet, med fokus på antalet RPL control packets, Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) och energiförbrukning. Resultaten indikerar att både virtuell rot och multiple-DODAG strategier fungerar bra vid låg datapaketförlust, medan den virtuella rotstrategin överträffar multiple-DODAG strategin vid hög datapaketförlust. Dessutom medför den virtuella rotstrategin något högre energikostnader än flera DODAG-strategin. Dessutom visar multi-instans-strategin dålig prestanda i de flesta scenarier, förutom när det gäller datapaketleveransförhållandet under höga datapaketförlustförhållanden. Utöver analysen identifieras slutligen potentiella områden för framtida forskning om RPL-protokollets multi-sink-mekanism.

Hydrological and sedimentological processes in a tropical semiarid climate / Processos hidrolÃgicos e sedimentolÃgicos em clima semiÃrido tropical

Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / The understanding of processes such as the generation of surface runoff, sediment yield and their relations with the rainfall regime is the basis for the planning and effective management of soil and water resources in a watershed. In this context, the present study aims to identify the main processes that influence the generation of surface runoff and sediment yield in small watersheds, and determine parameters for empirical sedimentological models, as well as the Sediment Delivery Ratio (SDR) for the tropical, semi-arid region of Brazil. The study area is the Iguatu Experimental Basin (IEB), which comprises a watershed of 16.74 km2, three small nested watersheds (from 1 to 3 ha) and three erosion plots of 20 m2. One of the watersheds had been under regenerating Caatinga for 35 years, another subjected to a management, which involved thinning the Caatinga, and the last faced deforestation followed by burning and the cultivation of grass. The period of study was six years (2009 to 2014). Collections to quantify surface runoff and sediment yield were taken for each erosive rainfall event in an accumulated period of 24 hours. Surface runoff in the watersheds was quantified using Parshall flumes, and sediment yield was measured with towers and trenches to collect suspended sediment and bedload. On the watershed scale, runoff was measured by means of a spillway, and sediment yield by a turbidimeter. Cluster analysis was used to determine rainfall regimes and groups of similar rainfall-runoff events. With data from the erosion plots and watersheds, the C factors and coefficients of the Modified Universal Soil Loss Equation (MUSLE) were calibrated and validated. From data measured in the basin, sediment delivery ratios were determined. The occurrence of dry spells and the formation of cracks in the soil were important factors in controlling the generation of runoff and consequently sediment yield. The dry spells made it possible for the soil to dry out, with the formation of cracks, which acted as pathways for preferential flow, generating higher initial abstraction during the start of the rainy season. Changes in ground cover had little influence on accumulated flow, demonstrating that the soil characteristics and conditions as moisture and the presence of cracks, best explain the generation of runoff on expansive soils. The greatest runoff losses in all the watersheds under study were for Rainfall Regime II, characterized by higher depth, intensity and occurrence of the rainfall. For the ground covers under study, values for the C factors and the fit of the coefficients "a" and "b" of MUSLE, proved to be appropriate and recommended according to the statistical indices employed. Values for sediment delivery ratio for individual rainfall events ranged from 0.08 to 1.67%, with an average of 0.68%. In the basin, extreme events may cause high disaggregation of soil particles, but without sufficient transporting energy for dragging the sediment, generating low SDR. / O entendimento de processos como geraÃÃo do escoamento superficial, produÃÃo de sedimentos e suas relaÃÃes com o regime pluviomÃtrico à a base para o planejamento e a gestÃo eficaz dos recursos solo e Ãgua em uma bacia hidrogrÃfica. Nesse contexto, o presente estudo tem como objetivos identificar os principais processos que influenciam a geraÃÃo do escoamento superficial e a produÃÃo de sedimento em pequenas bacias hidrogrÃficas, e calibrar parÃmetros de modelos sedimentolÃgicos empÃricos, bem como a razÃo de aporte de sedimentos (SDR) para a regiÃo semiÃrida tropical do Brasil. A Ãrea de estudo à a Bacia Experimental de Iguatu (BEI), composta de uma bacia de 16,74 km2, trÃs pequenas microbacias aninhadas (de 1 a 3 ha) e trÃs parcelas de erosÃo de 20 m2. Uma das microbacias foi mantida com Caatinga em regeneraÃÃo hà 35 anos, outra submetida ao manejo de raleamento da Caatinga e na Ãltima foi realizado o desmatamento seguido de queimada e cultivo de capim. O perÃodo de estudo foi de seis anos (2009 a 2014). As coletas para quantificaÃÃo do escoamento superficial e da produÃÃo de sedimentos foram realizadas a cada evento de chuva erosiva, no acumulado de 24 horas. O escoamento superficial nas microbacias foi quantificado atravÃs de calhas Parshall e as produÃÃes de sedimentos foram mensuradas atravÃs de torres e fossos coletores de sedimentos em suspensÃo e arraste. Na bacia de 16,74 km2, o escoamento superficial foi mensurado por meio de um vertedor e a produÃÃo de sedimentos atravÃs de um turbidÃmetro. AnÃlises de agrupamento foram utilizadas para determinaÃÃo de regimes de chuvas e grupos de eventos similares de chuva-deflÃvio. Com dados das parcelas de erosÃo e das microbacias foram calibrados e validados os fatores C e os coeficientes da EquaÃÃo Universal de Perdas de Solo Modificada (MUSLE). A partir dos dados medidos na bacia foram determinadas as razÃes de aporte de sedimentos. A ocorrÃncia de veranicos e a formaÃÃo de fendas no solo foram determinantes no controle da geraÃÃo de escoamento e consequentemente da produÃÃo de sedimentos. A ocorrÃncia de veranicos possibilitou o secamento do solo com a formaÃÃo de fendas, que agem como caminhos preferenciais para o fluxo de Ãgua, gerando elevadas abstraÃÃes inicias durante o inÃcio da estaÃÃo chuvosa. As mudanÃas da cobertura vegetal apresentaram pouca influÃncia sobre o escoamento acumulado, indicando que as caracterÃsticas e condiÃÃes do solo, como umidade e presenÃa de fendas, explicam melhor a geraÃÃo de escoamento em solos expansivos. Maiores perdas por escoamento em todas as microbacias estudadas foram para chuvas do Regime II caracterizado por maiores alturas pluviomÃtricas, intensidades e ocorrÃncias. Quanto aos valores dos fatores C e dos coeficientes de ajuste âaâ e âbâ da MUSLE, para as coberturas estudadas, mostraram-se apropriados e recomendados de acordo com os Ãndices estatÃsticos empregados. Os valores da razÃo de aporte de sedimentos para eventos pluviomÃtricos individuais variaram de 0,08 a 1,67%, com mÃdia de 0,68%. Na bacia, eventos extremos podem causar elevada desagregaÃÃo de partÃculas de solo, mas podem nÃo dispor de energia de transporte suficiente para arrastÃ-las, gerando baixo SDR.

Les réseaux de capteurs sans fils (WSN) sont composés d'un très grand nombre de capteurs, capables de mesurer des paramètres physiques de l'environnement, de mettre en forme l'information obtenue et de la communiquer aux autres capteurs grâce à une interface radio. Les capteurs étant en général déployés sur de très grandes étendues géographiques, l'énergie nécessaire pour les faire fonctionner est fournie par une batterie embarquée sur le capteur. En général, il est difficile de recharger les batteries une fois les capteurs déployés. Economiser l'énergie est donc une préoccupation constante lors de la conception des capteurs et des protocoles de communication utilisés, de manière à prolonger la durée de vie du réseau. Dans ce but, les capteurs transmettent leurs données avec des puissances d'émission très faibles. Avec de telles puissances d'émission, un message ne peut être transmis que sur quelques dizaine de mètres. De ce fait, lorsqu'un capteur détecte un événement, le message est transmis en mode ad-hoc multisauts jusqu'au puits, un nœud spécifique du réseau, qui récolte toutes les informations et est capable de réagir de manière adéquate. Dans cette thèse, nous donnons d'abord un état de l'art avancé sur les WSN. Ensuite nous analysons l'impact du cycle d'endormissement et des liens non fiable sur la couche de routage. A partir des résultats analytiques, nous proposons trois méthodes originales, simples et efficaces pour construire des coordonnées virtuelles en prenant en compte la non fiabilité des liens dans les WSN. En prenant en compte le cycle d'endormissement et les contraintes temps-réel, nous proposons deux protocoles cross-layer qui ont de bons taux de livraison et qui permettent de respecter des contraintes temporelles. Pour pallier à la dynamicité des réseaux de capteurs sans fil, nous proposons un protocole de routage robuste qui adapte ses paramètres quand la topologie change. Enfin, nous concluons et donnons quelques perspectives. / Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are composed of a large number of battery-powered sensor nodes that have the ability to sense the physical environment, compute the obtained information and communicate using the radio interfaces. Because sensor nodes are generally deployed on a large and wild area, they are powered by embedded battery. And it is difficult to change or recharge the battery, thus to reduce the energy consumption when sensors and protocols are designed is very important and can extend the lifetime of WSNs. So sensor nodes transmit packets with a lower transmission power (e.g. OdBm). With this transmission power, a packet can only be transmitted dozens of meters away. Therefore, when a sensor detects an event, a packet is sent in a multi-hop, ad-hoc manner (without fixed infrastructure and each sensor is able to relay the packet) to the sink (specific node which gathers information and reacts to the network situation). In this thesis, we first give an elaborate state of the art of WSNs. Then the impacts of duty-cycle and unreliable links or the performances of routing layer are analyzed. Based on the analytical results, we then propose three new simple yet effective methods to construct virtual coordinates under unreliable links in WSNs. By further taking the duty-cycle and real-time constraints into consideration we propose two cross-layer forwarding protocols which can have a greater delivery ratio and satisfy the deadline requirements. In order to have protocols for the WSNs that have dynamic topology, we then propose a robust forwarding protocol which can adapt its parameters when the topology changes. At last, we conclude this thesis and give some perspectives.

由於VANET上的行動節點移動速度快,加上受到道路及交通號制的限制,導致網路拓樸快速改變,容易造成網路斷訊,影響資料封包在網路上的傳送效能。在傳統的MANET上有許多用來傳送資料封包的路由機制,並不直接適用在VANET上。隨著Global Position System (GPS)的普及,越來越多的車輛都具備GPS,用以輔助行車定位之用。在本研究中我們將透過GPS取得車輛的地理資訊,提出一個適用於VANET中以車行方向為基礎的貪婪路由演算法(MDBG)。 本論文目的在強化VANET網路上資料封包的路由選擇策略。所提出的路由機制將會透過hello message來取得相鄰車輛的位置和車行方向,並利用目標要求(DREQ)、目標回應(DREP)來獲得目標車輛的資訊。進而運用車輛的車行方向,選擇適當的相鄰車輛找出一條穩定的路由路徑。當來源車輛和目標車輛的車行方向相同時,AODV能有不錯的效能表現。而我們的路由演算法(MDBG)將強化當來源車輛和目標車輛的車行方向相反,並且逐漸遠離時的效能表現。實驗模擬的結果顯示MDBG在封包到達率、吞吐量和平均端對端延遲上較之於AODV及DSR演算法有更優異的表現。 / Packets transmission over VANET is intermittent due to rapid change of network topology. This comes from both high mobility of mobile nodes and road limitation. Intermittent transmission causes inefficient packet delivery. Those routing protocols applicable to MANET might not be suitable for VANET. On the other hand, Global Position System (GPS) is becoming prevalent in assisting positioning for vehicles. In this research, we develop a Moving Direction Based Greedy (MDBG) routing algorithm for VANET. MDBG algorithm is based on the geographical information collected by GPS. The objective of the thesis is to enhance routing decision in packet delivery. The "hello message" is used to retrieve the locations and moving directions of neighboring vehicles. Destination REQuest (DREQ) and Destination REPly (DREP) messages are used to retrieve target vehicle information. The source vehicle will thus use these information together with its own moving direction information to establish a stable routing path by selecting appropriate neighboring vehicles. AODV algorithm is proved to have good performance as both the source vehicle and target vehicle have the same moving direction. MDBG algorithm is proposed to leverage the problem as source vehicle and target vehicle move far apart in opposite directions. Simulation results show that MDBG outperforms both AODV and DSR in packet arrival rate, throughput and average end-to-end delay.
