Effects of etching duration on the surface roughness, surface loss, flexural strength, and shear bond strength to a resin cement of e.max cad glass ceramic

Al-Johani, Hanan January 2017 (has links)
EFFECTS OF ETCHING DURATION ON THE SURFACE ROUGHNESS, SURFACE LOSS, FLEXURAL STRENGTH OF E.MAX CAD GLASS CERAMIC AND SHEAR BOND STRENGTH TO A RESIN CEMENT Background: Long-term retention of ceramic restorations is dependent on the bond strength of the luting resin to both the tooth and porcelain substrates. In order to achieve successful bonding, the surface of the porcelain substrate must be modified to increase the surface roughness, and this can be achieved chemically by hydrofluoric (HF) acid etching. However, prolonged HF acid etching has shown to have a weakening effect on the evaluated lithium disilicate glass-ceramics. Therefore, it is essential to quantify the required etching duration of HF acid to minimize the possible deleterious effects on ceramic strength while maximizing the bond strength to tooth structure. Objectives: To evaluate the effects of HF acid etching duration on the surface roughness, surface loss, flexural strength, and shear bond strength of IPS e.max CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent) lithium disilicate-based glass ceramic to a resin cement. Hypothesis: The differences in HF acid etching durations will not have a significant effect on the surface roughness, surface loss, flexural strength, or shear bond strength of IPS e.max CAD to a resin cement. Methods: 168 specimens were prepared from IPS e.max CAD blocks. All specimens were polished and sonically cleaned in distilled water. Specimens were fired in the vacuum pump furnace according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Specimens were then divided into 4 groups, according to etching durations, then further divided into 3 subgroups, according to the properties tested. Group A was not etched (control), Groups B, C and D were etched with 5-percent HF acid (IPS Ceramic Etching gel, Ivoclar Vivadent) for 20 s, 60 s and 90 s respectively. The morphologies of both etched and non-etched surfaces in specimens of subgroup 1 of each etching group (n = 16/group) were observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, non-contact surface profilometry (Proscan 2000) was used to calculate the surface loss and to examine the surface roughness of the etched ceramic surfaces and roughness values (Ra, Rq) were documented for each group. Furthermore, etched specimens of subgroup 2 (n = 16/group) were silanated (Monobond Plus, Ivoclar Vivadent) and cemented with a resin cement (Multilink Automix, Ivoclar Vivadent). The shear bond strength (SBS) was measured using a universal mechanical testing machine. For each etching group, subgroup 3 specimens (n = 10/group) were loaded to failure in a three-point bending test to measure their flexural strength values using a universal mechanical testing machine. Data for surface roughness, surface loss, and flexural strength were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), to identify the significant effects of different HF acid etching durations. Data for shear bond strength test were analyzed using two-way ANOVA to test the effects of etching duration, storage for 24 hours/thermocycling, and their interaction. All pair-wise comparisons from ANOVA analysis were made using Fisher’s Protected Least Significant Differences to control the overall significance level at 5 percent. Results: Difference in HF etching durations did not have a significant effect on surface roughness values Ra or Rq (p = 0.3408; p = 0.3245) respectively, but had a significant effect on surface loss (p = 0.0006). SBS values were not significantly different between experimental groups (p = 0.4650); however, SBS values after 24-h storage were significantly higher than that found after thermocycling (p = 0.0166) among different etching durations. Finally, different HF etching durations did not have a significant effect on flexural strength values (p = 0.1260). Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, different HF etching durations did not have a significant effect on surface roughness, flexural strength, or shear bond strength of IPS e.max CAD. However, the different etching durations significantly affected the surface loss of the lithium disilicate glass ceramics.

Abreu, Paulo Humaitá de 10 May 2002 (has links)
The resistance to the corrosion was evaluated through weight loss to an alternated immersion (solution-air) and its consequent changes on the surface of three restoring materials (them amalgams Dispersalloy and Tytin Plus, both with high copper content, respectively dispersion phase and unique particle, as well as the alloy gallium base Galloy), associated or not to two adhesive systems (All-Bond 2 and PAAMA-2), observed by measuring the surface roughness. Ten bodies-of-test were made, for each specific condition, in a metallic matrix os stainlesss steel with five cilindrical cavities, measuring 10,7 mm in diameter and 3,0 mm thickness each one. After polishing, as in the metalographic anal ysis, the specimens were weighed and submitted to the roughness measurer to measuring inicial. These were submitted to an alternated immersion in 5 % sodium sulfide solution, for 24 hours and then the second weighting was performed and obtained the average values of weight loss. A second measure of the surface roughness was then performed. The results were registered and submitted to the variance analysis, to two approaches, and to the test of contrasts of Tukey-Kramer. From the obtained results, it was concluded that all specimens lost weight and there was an increasing roughness surface after immersion in corrosive solution; Galloy showed higher values, both weight loss test and the rougness surface, compared to two amalgams; the alloy Tytin Plus obtained better results; there was significant statistical difference among the restoring materials, but not among adhesive systems, showing different behaviors according to arrangement of these factors.

Avaliação do desgaste superficial do esmalte e da dentina radicular submetidos ao tratamento clareador: in vitro e in situ / Evaluation of enamel and root dentin surface wear submitted to bleaching treatment: in vitro and in situ

Romano, Juliana Jendiroba Faraoni 16 May 2008 (has links)
Due to the chemical and microstructural alterations caused by bleaching, the dental substrates can become more susceptible to tissue loss, mainly if exposed to erosive/abrasive challenges. Therefore, the present study had the following objectives: 1) to analyze in vitro, if enamel and root dentin that had been bleached with different agents and concentrations, were at increased risk of wear when submitted to cycles of erosion and abrasion; 2) to compare the effect of the application of a 10% carbamide peroxide bleaching agent to a placebo on wear of enamel and root dentin, through an in situ model. The results of the in vitro study showed that independent of agent used, the bleaching demonstrated no increase in the wear of enamel when exposed to the erosive-abrasive episodes. In dentin, the wear was dependent on the bleaching agent applied. Based on the in situ protocol adopted, the 10% carbamide peroxide did not cause higher wear on the enamel, but increased the wear of the root dentin compared to the placebo. It could be concluded that in terms of superficial wear, enamel was not affected by bleaching treatment, while dentin showed to be more susceptible. Thus, additional caution is suggested in the choice of the bleaching agent when root dentin is exposed.

Karakterizacija strukture i adhezivna svojstva gleđi / Characterization of the structure and adhesive properties of enamel

Vicko Kristina 07 December 2020 (has links)

/
Dental enamel is a substrate for the adhesion of direct and indirect fillings, venners, splints, fissure sealants and orthodontic brackets. Adhesion between the material and dental tissue is key to success of various interventions in dentistry. Despite the abundance and variety of new materials, adhesion has not been fully resolved. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the mechanical and chemical properties of the enamel after treatment with different conditioners. Determine the hardness and modulus of elasticity, the chemical content of calcium and phosphate minerals in the surface layer of the enamel before and after etching with different acids, and define the effect of enamel prismaticity on the degree of demineralisation by applying different acids. METHODS: An in vitro study was performed on extracted human teeth. In relation to the conditioner used, 192 were analyzed, of which 96 were permanent teeth and 96 were decidous teeth. Prepared enamel samples were analyzed before and after the application of four types of conditioner: 37% orthophosphoric acid (Kerr, Gel etchant), 10% polyacrylic acid (GC, Dentin Conditioner), phosphoric acid ester monomer (GC G bond), hydroxyethyl methacrylate with phosphoric acid ( 3M Unitek, Transbond ™ Plus Self Etching Primer ). The hardness and modulus of elasticity of the enamel were determined by nanoindentation, the structure of the enamel surface layer by scanning electron microscopy, while the chemical composition of the enamel surface layer was determined by energy dispersive spectroscopy. RESULTS: The results of the modulus of elasticity within the group of decidous teeth indicated statistically significant differences between the results of untreated occlusal surface and all treated occlusal surface samples, while the analysis of the hardness of the enamel in the same group indicated statistically significant differences between the values of untreated and all treated samples, on all surfaces except buccal surface samples treated with polyacrylic acid. In the group of permanent teeth, there are statistically significant differences in the value of the modulus of elasticity between the samples treated with orthophosphoric acid, regardless of the tooth surface, compared to the groups in which other conditioners were used, except when the samples of the lingual surface of permanent teeth were treated with orthophosphoric acid in comparison to same sample group treated with Transbond. The results of the hardness of the permanent tooth enamel showed statistically significant differences between the untreated, control group and all groups of conditioners used, regardless of the tooth surface tested. Each conditioner applied changed the surface morphology of the sample. Orthophosphoric and polyacrylic acid, to a large extent, influenced the appearance of etching patterns type 1 and type 2. Using G bond and Transbond alongside to type 1, a large proportion of the etching pattern was type 5. Analysis of the chemical components of the surface layer of the enamel samples before and after conditioning indicated reduction of the proportion of analyzed elements, except for oxygen whose mass fraction increased after treatment with all conditioners in the permanent and deciduous teeth group. CONCLUSION: The values of the hardness of the enamel and the values of the modulus of elasticity decrease significantly after etching of the enamel to a degree that depends on the conditioner applied. The etching effect on aprismatic enamel is significantly smaller than the degree of demineralisation of the prismatic enamel in all conditioners tested. The chemical content of calcium and phosphate minerals in the surface layer of the enamel is significantly lower after the conditioning, however the Ca and P ratio does not change.

Francisconi dos Rios, Luciana Fávaro, Casas-Apayco, Leslie, Calabria, Marcela Pagani, Francisconi, Paulo Afonso Silveria, Borges, Ana Flávia Sanches, Wang, Linda 04 1900 (has links)
PURPOSE: To assess the long-term effect of a 2% aqueous chlorhexidine (CHX) solution on bond strength to artificially eroded dentin compared to sound dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Flat mid-coronal dentin surfaces of extracted third molars (n = 28) were subjected only to grinding with a 600-grit SiC paper for 1 min (sound dentin S, n = 14) or additionally to erosive pH cycling with a cola-based soft-drink (eroded dentin E, n = 14). After acid etching, rinsing, and air drying, S and E were rehydrated with 1.5 μl of 2% CHX (S2%, n = 7; E2%, n = 7) or of distilled water (control SC, n = 7; EC, n = 7). Composite buildups were incrementally constructed with Filtek Z350 following Adper Single Bond 2 application. Specimens were sectioned into beams, which were subjected to microtensile testing immediately or after 6 or 12 months of aging. Fractured surfaces were observed under a digital microscope (50X magnification). Microtensile bond strength (μTBS) (MPa) was analyzed by three-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests (α = 0.05) and failure mode by the Kruskal-Wallis test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Compared to sound dentin, eroded dentin was consistently related to lower μTBS. Immediately and after 12-month aging, the effect of CHX was insignificant, but it was significant after 6-month aging, when it conserved the bond strength to both eroded and sound dentin. The percentage of adhesive and mixed failures were equivalent, and significantly more frequent than cohesive failures, whether in dentin or in composite. CONCLUSION: The 2% CHX effect on bond strength conservation to both eroded and sound dentin was not found to be persistent. / Revisión por pares
