Antibiotics and Antimicrobial Resistance: An Evaluation of the Knowledge, Attitude and Perception Among Dental Students and Academic Deans and Department Chairs within U.S. Dental Schools

Holz, Magdalena S 01 January 2019 (has links)
Purpose: This study aimed to survey current 3rd and 4th year dental students, academic deans, and department chairs within U.S. dental schools to analyze the level of understanding; education; guidelines; and overall awareness regarding antibiotic use within dentistry and antimicrobial resistance. Methods: A 25-question survey intended for 3rd and 4th year dental students and a 20-question survey intended for academic deans and various department chairs of U.S dental schools were each developed utilizing REDCap. The survey invitations were sent via e-mail to the current academic dean of each U.S. dental school for distribution. Results: There were a total of 18 respondents from the academic dean and department chair survey and 172 student respondents. Overall, 71% of students reported that they could benefit from more education regarding antibiotics. The majority of both groups agreed that dentistry should play an important role in reducing antimicrobial resistance, but most dental students were ‘not at all familiar’ with the term antimicrobial stewardship and several were unsure if clinical guidelines were present at their schools. Conclusion: Improvements to the dental educational curriculum regarding the responsible use of antibiotics, along with the implementation of stewardship programs within dentistry are strongly encouraged.

Bergvall, Hanna January 2013 (has links)
The objective of this study was to compare dental student’s results at an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) with their self-assessed results. These results were compared depending on gender. There are several studies published comparing gender differences in self-assessment in theoretical written exams. However there is a lack of knowledge regarding clinical examinations. At theoretical examinations it has been found that men tend to over-estimate their performance more frequently than women do. Whether these differences in self-assessment exist because men tend to over-estimate themselves, women tend to under-estimate themselves, a combination of both or the self-assessment is consistent with the result at the examination vary between different studies. All students (35 women, 16 men) at the Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University (sixth semester) were examined with an OSCE with 13 stations. The student’s real results at OSCE were compared with their self-assessed results at each station. The assessments were compared regarding gender. At most of the 13 stations there were no significant differences in over- and under-estimation regarding women and men. It was more difficult for men to assess their performance regarding impression with alginate, this difference was statistically significant. These misjudgments were mainly caused by over-estimation. There were no results indicating that women under-estimate their performance at greater extent than men. As opposed to studies where gender differences concerning self-assessment in theoretical examinations are studied, there were no significant differences in over- and under-estimation between genders in clinical examination evaluated in the present study.

Tandläkarstudenters kunskap gällande tandhygienistens kompetens : - En enkätstudie / Dental students knowledge about dental hygienists competence : - A questionnaire study

Kartal, Petra, Mavi, Miray January 2018 (has links)
Materialet bearbetades i SPSS. / Background: Dental hygienist profession plays a significant role in Swedish dentistry and works primarily with prevention/health promotion. Dentists and dental hygienist's professions complete each other, which makes co-operation necessary to obtain a safe care for the patient. The aim was to study dental students (semester 10) knowledge regarding dental hygienists competence. Method: A cross-sectional study with questionnaire as measuring instrument was performed. The sample consisted of dentistry students from Malmo- and Gothenburg’s University, with two respective three years of dental hygienist education. Variables were analyzed by descriptive statistics. Comparisons between institutions, through Chi2-test were performed in SPSS. The result was based on 51 (Malmo) respective 26 (Gothenburg) participants. Statistically significant differences occurred regarding questions of diagnosing pericoronitis, behavioral changes, removing sutures, working with temporomandibular disorders, bite-impressions and responsibility of radiographic equipment. Malmo had 39 participants and Gothenburg 18 that reported they had not received enough knowledge. The relationship between the students knowledge and dental hygienists’ length of education cannot be established. Conclusion: There is a knowledge about dental hygienist’s competence, but with some variation. Differences in knowledge exists between the institutions. The majority of participants felt that the education did not give them sufficient knowledge about the dental hygienist's competence.
