Ο Παγκόσμιος Ιστός έχει αλλάξει τον τρόπο που οι άνθρωποι επικοινωνούν μεταξύ τους καθώς και τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι επιχειρήσεις διευθύνονται. Ως επέκταση του παγκόσμιου ιστού εμφανίζεται ο Σημασιολογικός Ιστός. Ο Σημασιολογικός Ιστός είναι ειδικότερα, ένας Ιστός από πληροφορίες που είναι δυνατό να διαβαστούν από τις μηχανές και η έννοια των οποίων είναι σαφώς καθορισμένη από πρότυπα. Στόχος της διπλωματική αυτής είναι η επέκταση και η εμβάθυνση σε θεμελιώδεις έννοιες του Σημασιολογικού Ιστού και η σύνδεση του με τις ΤΠΕ στην εκπαίδευση. Στα παρακάτω κεφάλαια προσεγγίζεται αναλυτικά η έννοια του Σημασιολογικού Ιστού, καθώς επίσης και οι βασικές γλώσσες σήμανσης του οι οποίες είναι: 1. Η γλώσσα σήμανσης XML, μια γλώσσα που επιτρέπει τη γραφή δομημένων εγγράφων ιστού με ένα καθορισμένο από το χρήστη λεξιλόγιο. 2. Tο Resource Description Framework (RDF) που είναι ένα πλαίσιο για την αντιπροσώπευση των πληροφοριών στον Παγκόσμιο Ιστό, όπου αναλύονται οι βασικές έννοιες που χρησιμοποιεί όπως το γραφικό μοντέλο δεδομένων, λεξιλόγιο βασισμένο στο URI, τύποι δεδομένων κ.α. 3. Το λεξιλόγιο καθορισμού του RDF (RDF Schema), που καθορίζει τις κλάσεις και τις ιδιότητες που μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν για να περιγράψουν κλάσεις, ιδιότητες και άλλες πηγές. Σε επόμενο κεφάλαιο εισάγουμε στον αναγνώστη τον όρο της οντολογίας. Αναλύουμε το τι είναι οντολογία, τις κύριες λειτουργίες των οντολογιών, και προτείνεται ένα περίγραμμα για την κατασκευή των οντολογιών. Ξεχωριστή αναφορά γίνεται στο Ontology Inference Layer OIL που είναι μια πρόταση για ένα βασισμένο στον Ιστό στρώμα αντιπροσώπευσης και συμπεράσματος των οντολογιών. Επίσης γίνεται αναφορά στη βασική ιδέα σχεδιασμού του OIL που είναι το onion model του. Ακολούθως, αναλύουμε τον τρόπο με τον οποίο συντάσσεται μια οντολογία στη γλώσσα OIL. Ως συνέχεια του παραπάνω εμφανίζεται η DAML+OIL, που είναι μια σημασιολογική γλώσσα για τις πηγές του Ιστού. Στηρίζεται στα πρότυπα του W3C όπως το RDF και το RDF Schema, και επεκτείνει αυτές τις γλώσσες με ακόμα πιο πλούσιες αρχές διαμόρφωσης. Στη συνέχεια προσεγγίζουμε εκτενώς την Web Ontology Language OWL που είναι μια σημασιολογική γλώσσα σήμανσης για την έκδοση και τη διανομή των οντολογιών στον Παγκόσμιο Ιστό. Η σύνδεση του σημασιολογικού ιστού με την εκπαίδευση είναι το θέμα που αναλύεται παρακάτω με τίτλο Εκπαιδευτικός Σημασιολογικός Ιστός και γίνεται εκτενής αναφορά στις προκλήσεις και τις προοπτικές που διαφαίνονται. Η σύνδεση αυτή γίνεται με το προσαρμοστικό WBES. Ακόμα, εξετάζουμε μερικά σενάρια εφαρμογής του εκπαιδευτικού Σημασιολογικού Ιστού όπως την βασισμένη στη σημασιολογία αναζήτηση για εκπαιδευτικό περιεχόμενο, την περιήγηση στη γνώση ή «προσωπικές πύλες», τα βασισμένα στη σημασιολογία μαθήματα και τις εκπαιδευτικές υπηρεσίες σημασιολογικού ιστού. Τέλος, αναφέρουμε με συντομία εφαρμογές εκπαίδευσης βασισμένες σε οντολογίες όπως το πρόγραμμα CIPHER, το πρόγραμμα Connexions κ.α. / -

We introduce a new across-peer rate allocation algorithm with successive refinement to improve the video transmission performance in P2P networks, based on the combination of multiple description coding and network coding. Successive refinement is implemented through layered multiple description codes. The algorithm is developed to maximize the expected video quality at the receivers by partitioning video bitstream into different descriptions depending on different bandwidth conditions of each peer. Adaptive rate partition adjustment is applied to ensure the real reflection of the packet drop rate in the network. Also the granularity is changed to the scale of atomic blocks instead of stream rates in prior works. Through simulation results we show that the algorithm outperforms prior algorithms in terms of video playback quality at the peer ends, and helps the system adjust better to the peer dynamics.

This thesis devises quantization and source-channel coding schemes to increase the error robustness of the newly standardized ITU-T G.711.1 speech coder. The schemes employ Gaussian mixture model (GMM) based multiple description quantizers (MDQ). The thesis reviews the literature focusing on GMM based quantization, MDQ, and GMM-MDQ design methods and bit allocation schemes. GMM-MDQ are then designed for the quantization and coding of the MDCT coefficients in the G.711.1 speech coder. The designs are optimized for and tested over packet erasure channels. An essential requirement for the design of large VLSI circuits is a design methodology which would allow the designer to overcome the complexity and correctness issues associated with the building of such circuits. We propose that many of the problems of the design of large circuits can be solved by using a formal design notation based upon the functional programming paradigm, that embodies design concepts that have been used extensively as the framework for software construction. The design notation should permit parallel, sequential, and recursive decompositions of a design into smaller components, and it should allow large circuits to be constructed from simpler circuits that can be embedded in a design in a modular fashion. Consistency checking should be provided as early as possible in a design. Such a methodology would structure the design of a circuit in much the same way that procedures, classes, and control structures may be used to structure large software systems. However, such a design notation must be supported by tools which automatically check the consistency of the design, if the methodology is to be practical. In principle, the methodology should impose constraints upon circuit design to reduce errors and provide' correctness by construction' . It should be possible to generate efficient and correct circuits, by providing a route to a large variety of design tools commonly found in design systems: simulators, automatic placement and routing tools, module generators, schematic capture tools, and formal verification and synthesis tools.

The demand for applications like transmission and sharing of video is ever-increasing. Although network resources (bandwidth in particular) and coverage, networking technologies, compression ratio of state-of-the-art video coders have improved, unreliability of the transmission medium prevents us from gaining the most benefit from these applications. This thesis introduces a video coder that is resilient to network failures for transmission applications by using the framework of multiple description coding (MDC). Unlike traditional video coding which compresses the video into single bitstream, in MDC the video is compressed into more than one bitstream which can be independently decoded. It not only averages out the effect of network errors over the bitstreams but it also makes it possible to utilize the multipath nature of most network topologies. An end-to-end rate-distortion optimization is proposed for the codec to make sure that the codec exhibits improved compression performance and that the descriptions are equally efficient to improve the final video quality. An optimized strategy for packetizing the compressed bitstreams of the descriptions is also proposed which guarantees that each packet is self-contained and efficient. The evaluation of the developed MD codec over simulated unreliable packet networks shows that it is possible to achieve improved resilience with the proposed strategies and the end video quality is significantly improved as a result. This is further verified with subjective evaluation over a range of different types of video test sequences.
