The Catalog as Interpretative Tool : Bibliographic Relationships in Resource Description and Access (RDA), with Special Regard to Problems of Operationalization

Wallheim, Henrik January 2013 (has links)
The new cataloging code Resource Description and Access (RDA) provides a system of instructions for recording relationships between related resources by means of a controlled vocabulary of relationship designators. The purpose of this two years master’s thesis in Archive, Library and Museum studies is to examine the construction of this system, as well as its theoretical foundation. One theoretical point of departure is the necessity of operational definitions for consistent identification of bibliographic relationships. Another such point of departure is that the theoretical model on which RDA is based (the FRBR model) is not a complete description of the bibliographic universe, but merely a limited representation of a set of assumptions about that universe. The thesis first examines Barbara B. Tillett's and Richard P. Smiraglia's theories and taxonomies of bibliographic relationships. The analysis shows that, in spite of their claims to provide a theoretical basis for consistent treatment of bibliographic relationships, neither Tillett nor Smiraglia offers operationally applicable definitions. The thesis then turns to RDA in order to examine the instructions and the list of relationship designators. After an introductory survey of RDA chapters 24 to 28, the possibility to record relationship designators at different entity levels is discussed. Remarkably, RDA neither provides instructions for how to choose between the entity levels, nor does it point out what this choice signifies. Finally, a selection of relationship designators representing content relationships is examined. The selected designators are analysed and compared to corresponding categories in literary theorist Gérard Genette's attempt to classify intertextual relationships. The analysis shows that though some of the selected designators are satisfactorily operationalized, most are not.

The growing availability of geospatial data, the diversity of geographic information environments and the continuous technological advances have enabled the development of methods and applications for descriptive treatment. That is the case of metadata standards allowing new practical approaches, especially in a digital environment. Government agencies, as major producers of cartographic material, are demanded to publish it in an open, transparent and machine-processable form. The access and use of these resources depend on proper standardization and technical specifications. Topographic maps are resources resulting from cartographic techniques and constitute reference items, with attributes and specificities that represent the territory, and are essential for public policies. The occurrence of various metadata standards indicates that the cartographic materials require studies about formats' compatibility and adequacy of description schemes. From the definition of metadata record, in order to meet specific requirements, emerges the question of: how to efficiently describe the cartographic materials and, more specifically, digital topographic maps? The thesis is that the presentation of digital topographic maps in an accessible format, with appropriate and unambiguous descriptions, facilitates their identification and location and, ultimately, its use. The proposition of this thesis is to analyze the theoretical Cataloguing framework that guides the standardized construction, in order to provide the fundamental principles and values to maps registry. The main goal is to contribute to the proper description and quality of Topographic Maps to meet the specific requisites and provide interoperability. In order to achieve this goal, analyses were made about the description scheme of the MGB to AACR2r profiles and the correspondence between the MGB profile and the MARC 21 format. As a result, a systematization of the relationships between...

Convenience to the Cataloger or Convenience to the User?: An Exploratory Study of Catalogers’ Judgment

Hasenyager, Richard Lee, Jr. 05 1900 (has links)
This mixed-method study explored cataloger’s judgment through the presence of text as entered by catalogers for the 11 electronic resource items during the National Libraries test for Resource Description and Access (RDA). Although the literature discusses cataloger’s judgment and suggests that cataloging practice based on new cataloging code RDA will more heavily rely on cataloger’s judgment, the topic of cataloger’s judgment in RDA cataloging was not formally studied. The purpose of this study was to study the differences and similarities in the MARC records created as a part of the RDA National Test and to determine if the theory of bounded rationality could explain cataloger’s judgment based on the constructs of cognitive and temporal limits. This goal was addressed through a content analysis of the MARC records and various statistical tests (Pearson’s Chi-square, Fisher’s Exact, and Cramer’s V). Analysis of 217 MARC records was performed on seven elements of the bibliographic record. This study found that there were both similarities and differences among the various groups of participants, and there are indications that both support and refute the assertion that catalogers make decisions based on the constructs of time and cognitive ability. Future research is needed to be able to determine if bounded rationality is able to explain cataloger’s judgment; however, there are indicators that both support and refute this assertion. The findings from this research have implications for the cataloging community through the provision of training opportunities for catalogers, evaluating workflows, ensuring the proper indexing of bibliographic records for discovery, and recommended edits to RDA.

One of the issues that Information Science is concerned with is the access to information resources, therefore the studies in this area include the library catalogs, which comprise bibliographic data (representations of information resources) and authority data (representations of the entities related to the information resources, such as persons, corporate body and concepts). The proposal of a Semantic Web in which data are processed not just by their syntax but also by their semantics has led to the development of a set of technologies for publishing and linking data on the Web, as well as technologies for data querying and for the computerized reasoning. The use of a subset of these technologies for publishing and linking data has led to the Linked Data concept. The experiments with these technologies in Information Science have given rise to projects for publishing authority data as Linked Data. However, we observed that these projects, still in initial or experimental stages, are not based on a theoretical framework developed in Information Science that can guide them regarding to the policies, to the procedures and to the technologies used in the publication of these data. Thus, starting from the question “how to publish authority data as Linked Data?” we define the main goal – conceptualize the functions of authority data in the catalogs and their benefits in Linked Data environments in order to propose a model for authority data publishing, as well as highlighting its policies, procedures and technologies – the thesis and the hypothesis of this research. To achieve this goal, first we made a literature review about authority control and the development of authority data in books, cards and digital catalogs, remarking the FRAD and FRSAD conceptual models which synthesize the functions of authority data. Then, we present the Linked Data concept and the main Semantic Web technologies related to it: URIs, RDF, RDFS and OWL; starting from this introduction, we describe three vocabularies that can be used to publishing authority data (SKOS, MADS/RDF and RDA Element Sets), some initiatives (Library of Congress Linked Data Service, datos.bne.es, data.bnf.fr, VIAF and AGROVOC) and the advantages of authority data published as Linked Data. Based on the results of this literature review, we propose a model for publishing authority data as Linked Data, The model comprases the following stages: planning; modeling and mapping; processing, linking and conversion; publishing; and feedback. After describing each of these stages, with its policies, procedures and technologies, we present the conclusions about the results and about the proposed model.
