Design Concept: My Amalgamation Of Eastern And Western CulturesDong, Yuting 01 January 2008 (has links)
While exploring various subjects in multiple techniques in multiple mediums, I create abstract images that illustrate high technology, urban life, and personal feelings. My work is influenced by Eastern and Western culture. Media, publication, and fashion are derived from Western culture, and design elements are derived from Eastern culture. In doing this, my goal is to achieve more opportunities, greater depth, and a wider audience for my work by cross-utilizing these diverse culture aspects.

Benchmarked Hard Disk Drive Performance Characterization and Optimization Based on Design of Experiments TechniquesLin, Yu-Wei 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
This paper describes an experimental study offered by Designs of Experiments (DOE) within the defined factor domains to evaluate the factor effects of simultaneous characteristics on the benchmarked hard disk drive performance by proposing well-organized statistical models for optimizations. The numerical relations of the obtained models permit to predict the behaviors of benchmarked disk performances as functions of significant factors to optimize relevant criteria based on the needs.
The experimental data sets were validated to be in satisfying agreement with predicted values by analyzing the response surface plots, contour plots, model equations, and optimization plots. The adequacy of the model equations were verified effectively by a prior generation disk drive within the same model family. The retained solutions for potential industrializations were the concluded response surface models of benchmarked disk performance optimizations.
The comprehensive benchmarked performance modeling procedure for hard disk drives not only saves experimental costs on physical modeling but also leads to hard-to-find quality improvement solutions to manufacturing decisions.

Urban Gardening : Development of a Smart System for Growing on BalconiesOldenburg, Malin, Ramén, Lina January 2012 (has links)
It has become increasingly important in today’s society to know where our food comes from and that it has not been transported over a long distance due to the environmental aspects that is brings. This combined with the fact that more people tend to move to bigger cities gives an increased need for smart solutions for growing vegetables and herbs on limited spaces such as a balconies. This is the background for this master thesis in collaboration with Hammarplast Consumer AB. Hammarplast Consumer AB has a couple of product lines that includes simpler hanging baskets and window boxes. They want to get ahead in the market and start selling more innovative products. The objective with this project is to design a smart system for growing on balconies and other limited spaces by implementing the knowledge gained during the Industrial design program at Luleå University of technology.A web-based survey was done at the start of the project, in order to receive information of what different needs there are among potential customers. To get a better view of what experienced growers need, a survey was posted on two different gardening forums. An interview was made with a sales person at Granngården in Luleå to get necessary information about growing plants. The results of the interview and the two surveys, together with a benchmarking about the current day situation, formed the basis for the needs analysis that later formed the requirements specification. The requirements specification lists the demands and wishes that the system for growing has. The demands and wishes were set against each other in a matrix in order to decide which demands and wishes were more important than the others. To get started with the creative thinking a mood board was made and a brainstorming was done with the help of the mood board. The brainstorming begun with writing a list of words that represented what the growing system should stand for. Four words were a bit more important than the others and these were chosen as key words for the project. The key words were simple, stable, smart and flexible. After the brainstorming some simple sketches were made that represented the words. These sketches together with the results of a workshop that was held were the basis for the conceptual design.Among the different solutions for the system of growing, three concepts were picked with the help of different evaluation methods. These concepts were developed further and then put against each other in a matrix with the demands and wished in order to evaluate which concept to choose for the final concept. Together with the results of this evaluation and the wishes of the client company a concept was chosen. The final concept consists of a big container shaped like a quarter of a circle so it can stand in a corner. It has a trellis attached to it for clinging plants and the possibility of hanging pots on it. It is 400 millimeter in height and has a 400 millimeter radius to manage even the most demanding vegetables and plants. It has a self-watering insert so it can be left unattended for a few days. There is a possibility to put two containers together to form half a circle so that it can stand against a wall. The final concept fulfilled all the needs that were found during the process of needs analysis. /
Validerat; 20120807 (anonymous)

Mobilamp : How a product design can facilitate the everyday life of urban nomadsDiers, Sophie January 2022 (has links)
Due to various societal changes such as globalization, urbanization and connectivity, new lifestyles, such as that of urban nomads, are becoming more common and relevant. Therefore, this study observes and analyzes this target group from a critical and multidisciplinary perspective. Urban nomads can be defined as a collective group of people who live and work in urban areas. They do not reside permanently in one place but move frequently within urban locations. Minimalism as part of low-consumption lifestyles and the concept of mobility, which form the core of the urban nomads‘ mindset, are examined in detail. The focus of the research is the relationship of urban nomads to material possessions and their meaning. Based on this, the thesis aims to generate criteria and requirements for a product design from the perspective of design, which meets the needs of urban nomads and simplifies their everyday life. Through a people-centered approach and the collaborative application of different methods, the urban nomads are placed in the focus of the innovation process and are actively involved in the process. The thesis results in the development of a transportable and multifunctional lamp (Mobilamp), which is realized in the form of a prototype based on the generated criteria from the research. The product design is considered as an example and analyzes in which way needs can be satisfied and through which usage situations the daily life of urban nomads can be facilitated. The aspect of sustainability in the consumption behavior of the target group is also critically analyzed and evaluated through the product.

Research has shown that restaurant-goers don't book a table simply because they are hungry, rather they go out for an experience. An experience that has been shown to be most affected by the design choices in the restaurant; interior design, sound, and scent, all contribute to the consumers perceived value of service. In the interest of filling a perceived gap in the research, this study aims to explore how vegan bistros work with design and in doing so, exploring how they use design strategically. Using a qualitative case-study research design this study explores and compares two different vegan bistros in Stockholm, Sweden. Through interviews, observations, and the study of artifacts the study examines how these bistros have used design when developing the concept. Our study found that the two bistros have used different approaches to achieving differentiation, in relation to design. One used a literal approach to the concept of veganism, associating it with nature and greens, while the other used an ironic approach where they decorated the dining room to look like a butcher. Our study concluded that the way in which the two vegan bistros have worked with design have provided them with a strategic competitive advantage through differentiation.

The Women's Wood Engraving Revival and its Global Impact (1912-1960): Gwen Raverat, Clare Leighton, and Joan HassallMoreshead, Abigail 15 August 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Using a feminist media historical lens, this dissertation examines three women artist-illustrators who participated in the early twentieth century wood engraving revival in the United Kingdom: Gwen Raverat (1885-1957), Clare Leighton (1898-1989), and Joan Hassall (1906-1988). Little scholarship exists on the wood engraving revival from a feminist media or book history perspective. To fill this gap, I examine the biographies of these women and the books and magazines they illustrated in their historical context, with attention to how their gender impacted their experience. This dissertation finds that women's participation in the wood engraving revival is significant because it afforded opportunities for women to become professional artists through a medium that had previously been controlled by men. They influenced print culture domestically and globally by illustrating political and literary magazines to broaden their visual appeal and by illustrating a variety of fiction that reflected how commercial publishing was being impacted by the "Book Beautiful" movement. This research further reveals how social networks and institutions played a complex role in the careers of women artist-illustrators in this period, and, as a result, in the development of the book in the twentieth century.

Reclaiming the voices and spaces for the youth of Vilakazi Street: Exploring spatial reform in Orlando WestDakile, Sinqobile 28 June 2023 (has links) (PDF)
The legacy of apartheid spatial planning is still evident under South Africa's democratic government. Townships are segregated dormitories with residents who still face many inequities in their daily lives. Soweto is a township which a deep history of struggle for liberation. Vilakazi street is especially symbolic due to all the activists who used their voices as a tool to fight against a system of inequality. Today Soweto is in a transitional phase. It has developed from what was once a dormitory township to a diverse, resilient community of people who have reclaimed the spaces as their own. This research serves to gain a deeper understanding of Vilakazi Street (as a catalyst to transformation) - an emerging high street in a culturally rich neighbourhood of Orlando West. Furthermore to understand the missing links and gaps which can better improve the quality of life for the community. It is also important to gain a deeper understanding of the legislation and contributing factors that enable the development of the existing vibrant township culture. Furthermore to learn what role the youth of today contribute to. Orlando West The research is guided and grounded in a theoretical framework which highlights the importance of democratic planning processes and enabling resident's voices in the design processes. The methodology and methods speak on the approach to gain research on the ground and the interactions with the local residents and their everyday spaces. A contextual analysis is done on the metro scale to better understand the role of Orlando West in relation to the city and a neighbourhood scale analysis is done to better understand the role Vilakazi Street plays in it's neighbourhood. This is followed by a case study which is used as a precedent to address and create inclusive design for the youth of Soweto. The proposal aims to improve and amplifying the vulnerable voices of the youth.

Urban design for small town regeneration: A socio-ecological approachHope-Bailie, Patrick 04 July 2023 (has links) (PDF)
South Africa is a country with many small towns, each rich in heritage and culture and with their own unique spatial character. Unfortunately, most small towns are in distress. The focus of investment to bring about spatial transformation has typically been in either cities, or villages; i.e. urban or rural. However, Arndt, Davies and Thurlow (2018) suggest that a 3rd way would be to invest in secondary cities and small towns. Small towns are embedded in the cultural landscape, and sit at the intersection of rapid urbanisation and industrial agricultural practicetwo of the most significant features of the Anthropocene. The broad aim of this research is to explore potential solutions to the regeneration of small towns in South Africa. This research applies urban design thinking and practice in a rural context; using evidence-based design research and a socio-ecological approach. Urban design is a critical spatial practice to ensure there is a focus on urban form and structure, and the creation of positive, enabling environments. An approach that balances the social order with the ecological order produces a spatial structure that heals and repairs the whole. This is urban design, giving form to life.

Navigating the Go-Down Zone in Namuwongo: reimagining spaces for informal traders in KampalaMasuba, Daniel 10 July 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Kampala, like many cities in the global south, is experiencing urbanisation at an unprecedented rate. Eight out of ten people are taking up informal employment, many of whom set up and occupy sites within highly contested spaces in the urban realm. Modernist planning and developments across the city are unable to sustain the growing number of traders in the city. The Godown Zone in Namuwongo provides an entry point for a self-organised community of informal traders who have taken upon themselves to create spaces for trade and occupation in a restricted space a few kilometres away from the local market. The Godown Zone offers a range of opportunities for inclusive and sustainable development however it also highlights the urban disconnect between planners need to control functions of spaces and the actual functioning of such spaces. Research has shown a bottom-up design approach through engaging with traders allows for effective and multifunctional development of spaces. This project has therefore development an urban design framework to amplify voices of the trading community of Namuwongo while factoring in long term development plans through interviews, observations, research studies, and site data analysis. By incorporating the experiences of the users, this urban design framework hopes to contribute to the development of an inclusive and vibrant city
