Communication Of Smart Materials: Bridging The Gap Between Material Innovation And Product Design

Akin, Tugce 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis is intended to help eliminate misconceptions and missing information over the realm of smart materials, by offering a newly structured &lsquo / Information Hierarchy for Smart Materials Communication for Industrial / Product Design&rsquo / . Industrial and product designers are invited to use the findings of the thesis to assist in developing a common smart materials language and culture, enriched by details, technicalities, opportunities, and creative and innovative material attributes. The study commences with the creation of a concise and compact reservoir of technical knowledge on smart materials and critically contrasts two established systems of classification for smart materials. Then, the subject of materials information appropriate to industrial design is discussed, highlighting channels through which smart materials information may be communicated at an optimum level so as to be amenable to exploitation by industrial designers. A sectoral analysis of smart materials use follows, including the presentation of factors that may hinder their more extensive exploitation in major industrial sectors. v The thesis concludes that smart materials have potential to initiate a breakthrough in the materials universe, and that industrial designers have a role in promoting smart materials knowledge, the capabilities of smart materials, and their innovation possibilities. It is recomended that since smart materials are a new generation of materials quite different from the conventional, they be promoted carefully through the proposed Information Hierarchy.

Impacto de iconoplástica y diseño de información en etiquetado octogonal de productos industrializados en Lima Moderna / Iconoplastic and design information impact on front-of-pack labelling of industrialized products for young adults in Lima Moderna

Espinoza Miranda, Rocío del Milagro 02 July 2019 (has links)
The main objective for this research is to analyze the importance of iconoplastic and design information to create a better perception on front-of-pack labelling of industrialized products. For this reason, the hypothesis is that the intervention approach of the iconoplastic study and design information on front-of-pack labelling creates a better perception in young adults. This research is qualitative because surveys were made to 50 consumers that confirms their visual disturbance about the front-of-pack labelling design. Also, lawyers and Agro-industrial engineers were interviewed to prove that this labelling could be modified in the future. Finally, designers were also interviewed to corroborate some graphic design technical issues. The research’s solution consists on modifying the front-of-pack labelling of industrialized products. For this, a grid was used for organizing all the information to create uniformity between the symbols, the form was changed from octagon to hexagon, the typography was changed to Franklin Gothic Condensed because it leaves more blank space for the composition. As a result, it was obtained that consumers consider this is a good solution because the symbols are organized in a better way. The conclusions that were found at the end of this project are that the iconoplastic study and the design information help to resolve graphic problems that preset the front-of-pack labelling because the information is organized on grids. Also, this project was only tested on a small group of people, but they consider this solution could generate impact in any public because the information is better organized. / Trabajo de investigación

Designing dashboards – visualizing software metrics for Continuous Delivery

Chan, Fanny January 2018 (has links)
Feedback is an essential part of the software delivery process. Software metrics, as feedback, can give knowledge about the essential parameters that affect the software development process. An improved understanding of the software development process can facilitate more effective software management. With new software development methodologies emerging, such as Continuous Delivery, new information needs arise. The new methodology requires a new way of thinking when designing and developing dashboards for software development. A dashboard is a communication tool that can provide up-to-date information through at a glance interaction. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how different software metrics related to Continuous Delivery can be visualized in a dashboard system at the company Saab. This thesis used a user-centered approach to find the appropriate visualization and user context to provide the user with feedback that supports the software development. The thesis work included user observations in the form of interviews and contextual inquiry. Thereafter, prototyping and usability testing were conducted in two iterations to design the dashboard and gather feedback. The result of this thesis work was a final prototype that was implemented in the program Kibana using real-time data from a software project. This thesis presents a set of elements that should be included when designing a dashboard for software development based on the findings of this study.

Définition et représentation d'intentions liées à l'expérience d'utilisation en phase amont du processus de conception de produit / Definition and representation of user experience intentions in the early phase of the industrial design process : a focus of the kansei process

Gentner, Alexandre 25 April 2014 (has links)
In the industrial context, users' experience with products recently became a major differentiation factor between competitors and can greatly influence the success of a product. In parallel, the interest from the design research community about this topic is also growing. This research intends to contribute to both contexts by investigating the definition and representation of user experience intentions. When defining the theoretical background of this research a link will be created between the complementary notions of user experience and kansei process. Based on this original field of study, this dissertation will discuss design activities undertaken by design teams in order to nourish the much wider industrial design process. With the five experiments that will be presented in this dissertation, I will explore the creation of tools and methodologies centred on potential users' kansei process and supporting the creation of intentions related to the user experience of products to be designed. I will also investigate how the nature of the resulting early representations can impact reciprocal understanding within multi-cultural design teams, and finally how the developed approach (Kansei Design approach) can impact different typologies of new concept development projects. In terms of academic contributions, this research enabled to model the exchange of kansei-related design information among design-teams and highlighted the added value of multi-sensory early representations resulting from experience-centred design activities. Regarding industrial contributions, the different experiments made it possible to characterise the Kansei Design approach in terms of tools, methodologies, and early representations. Moreover a link was established between the different characteristics of this approach and three typologies of new experience-centred concept development projects leading to different products development projects.

Dying ‘on time’ in dementia

de Haas, Marije, Hignett, Sue, Jun, Thomas Gyuchan 19 December 2019 (has links)
The fear of suffering dementia may lead to people signing an Advance Euthanasia Directive to make provision for health care decisions in the event that he/she becomes unable to make those decisions. However, Advance Euthanasia Directives are rarely adhered to in the case of dementia because the symptoms of dementia conflict with the due care criteria; a person requesting euthanasia must be able to confirm this request at time of death and must be undergoing unbearable and hopeless suffering. Once dementia has progressed, the euthanasia ‘wish’ can no longer be confirmed, and assessing suffering in a person with dementia is nearly impossible. This means that for a euthanasia request to be successful you have to perform the euthanasia early enough, while the patient is still cognitively competent. The risk in doing so is that the patient may lose years of their life that could have been full of quality. Postponing euthanasia in dementia could result in euthanasia not being possible and the person with dementia living a life that they did not want. This paper addresses how to decide what ‘on time’ is when it comes to dying with dementia through literature review, information visualisation and public debate.

Design informací vybrané tématiky / Design of Information of Selected Topics

Novotná, Kateřina January 2012 (has links)
The MA thesis presents the discipline of information design as a large but a compact unit. The chapter about the history in the wider framework of visual communication and the chapter about information age present conditions and context of evolution of information design to its contemporary forms. These chapters are followed by information design characteristic and division into several categories completed by a selection of representative examples. In addition to information design, an area of less constrained production (cases when readability prevails over aesthetics) of information art is presented here. "Web site offers a structured overview of information design and a view of different ways of perception of information through design."

Complex pleasures : designing optional interactions for public spaces

Helgason, Ingi January 2017 (has links)
This research aims to contribute to knowledge about the design of interactive systems sited in public spaces. In particular, the study concerns "optional interactions" where systems invite interaction from passers-by. These systems are action-orientated ratherthan goal-oriented, are designed to encourage engagement, and offer positive and rewarding experiences through the activity of interaction. This is in contrast to systems that provide functional services that are actively sought out by people, such as ticketvending machines or cash dispensers. This thesis asserts that this kind of optimal, designed experience can be examined and understood through comparisons with approaches taken by new-media artists working in interactive, technological media. Artists have different priorities, and use different methods to those employed by Human-Computer Interaction researchers, and this study aims to further understanding of the potential of these artistic approaches for interaction designers. The setting for these optional interaction systems is any public or semi-public environment, including museums, galleries, shopping centres, foyers and urban settings. As well as understanding the public and social context of these interactions, the experiential aspects of interaction are of primary importance in this study. The work is conducted with the aim of providing practical and theoretical resources to interaction designers tasked with creating engaging interactive systems that initiate and sustain experiences that are highly regarded by the participant. The thesis presents a designframework titled the Optional Interactions Design Framework.

Products liability in international trade and comparative law (European law, French law, American law and Iranian law)

Ariaeipour, Ali 16 March 2012 (has links)
Products liability is the name of a field of law concerning the liability of persons who are engaged in the business of selling or otherwise distributing products who sell or distribute a defective product for harm to persons or property caused by the defect. They are strictly liable. Their liability is a kind of liability which goes beyond the traditional distinction between the contractual and tortious liability. The United-States of America and European Union have the most developed products liability laws in the world. In the United-States the American Law Institute memorialized precedential rule of strict products liability in tort in §402A of the Second Restatement of Torts, and officially promulgated it in 1965. In 1992, the American Law Institute began working on a new Restatement (Third) of Torts on the specific topic of products liability law, approving the new Restatement in 1997 and publishing it in 1998 as The Restatement (Third) of Torts: Products Liability. In Europe, Council Directive of 25 July 1985 on the approximation of the laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States concerning liability for defective products (85/374/EEC) constitutes specific law of products liability of European Union member states. This directive has been transposed in French law by 19 May 1998 act and formed articles 1386-1 to 1386-18 of civil code. Fault is the only legal basis of Iranian products liability law. For solving conflicts of laws and jurisdictions which arise from international trade of products and determining the applicable law and competent jurisdiction we can implement international conventions and regulations which have been elaborated on this subject as well as traditional rules of conflicts of laws and jurisdictions of the countries.
