Quantifying consumer perception of designer intent

Shigemoto, Yuuki January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between designer intent and consumer response. A novel approach to evaluate the degree of correspondence between designer intent and consumer perceptions has been proposed. The empirical results have shown the influence of consumers’ cultural backgrounds on the way they perceive semantic and symbolic product personalities (characteristics of a product and its owner, respectively), comparing British and Japanese consumer groups. Semantic product personalities are more likely to be universally perceived and more easily intentionally elicited from consumers than symbolic product personalities. The research project consists of a pilot study (Phases I) and an experiment (Phase II) in which mixed methods of interview and survey are employed. Phase I seeks to explore the in-depth understanding of a designer’s thoughts by interviews, and to develop and test newly elaborated consumer surveys termed Designer-driven semantic differentials and Consumer-driven adjective selection. The findings have been considered to construct an analytical framework, characterised by Agreement among consumer perceptions and Correspondence between designer intent and the consumer perceptions, for evaluation of designers’ elicitation of intended product personalities from consumers. Phase II conducts a statistical examination of the impact of cultural difference on consumer perceptions under experimental conditions. The perception of target and non-target consumer groups as categorised by nationality were gauged by Designer-driven semantic differentials and Personality selection, specifically perception of USB sticks designed by three different designers. The survey results are analysed by using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA and Chi-squared test within the analytical framework. Subsequently, the results from Phase I and II are extensively discussed based on a framework based on brand personality and Affect Control Theory, both of which may involve potential impact on the development of design research into product development with emotional attachment. The scene is set for future research opportunities based on the approach and findings of this study.

The hypothesis that guides the thesis is that the design conception present in Lina's work is based on a harmony of language, which is expressed in the integration of furniture design and architectural space. The objective of the research is to verify, to explain and to demonstrate possible relations and similarities between the design of the building and its interiors and furniture. It is worth noting that the Architect designed reference works, such as the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP) and SESC Pompeia. She also worked directly in the production of furniture, with furniture factories Studio Palma and Pau-Brasil. In order to ascertain the outstanding issues, the option chosen was to study in more depth the project that the Architect designed for her residence in the neighborhood of Morumbi, in São Paulo, which today is occupied by the Institute that bears her name and that of her husband, Pietro Maria Bardi. Created in order to preserve the memory of the legacy left by the couple in the field of arts, design and architecture, the Lina Bo and P.M. Bardi Institute is today visited by tourists, students and researchers from various parts of the world. Comprehensive Forensic Toxicological Analysis of Designer Drugs

Swortwood, Madeleine Jean 21 October 2013 (has links)
New designer drugs are constantly emerging onto the illicit drug market and it is often difficult to validate and maintain comprehensive analytical methods for accurate detection of these compounds. Generally, toxicology laboratories utilize a screening method, such as immunoassay, for the presumptive identification of drugs of abuse. When a positive result occurs, confirmatory methods, such as gas chromatography (GC) or liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS), are required for more sensitive and specific analyses. In recent years, the need to study the activities of these compounds in screening assays as well as to develop confirmatory techniques to detect them in biological specimens has been recognized. Severe intoxications and fatalities have been encountered with emerging designer drugs, presenting analytical challenges for detection and identification of such novel compounds. The first major task of this research was to evaluate the performance of commercially available immunoassays to determine if designer drugs were cross-reactive. The second major task was to develop and validate a confirmatory method, using LC-MS, to identify and quantify these designer drugs in biological specimens. Cross-reactivity towards the cathinone derivatives was found to be minimal. Several other phenethylamines demonstrated cross-reactivity at low concentrations, but results were consistent with those published by the assay manufacturer or as reported in the literature. Current immunoassay-based screening methods may not be ideal for presumptively identifying most designer drugs, including the “bath salts.” For this reason, an LC-MS based confirmatory method was developed for 32 compounds, including eight cathinone derivatives, with limits of quantification in the range of 1-10 ng/mL. The method was fully validated for selectivity, matrix effects, stability, recovery, precision, and accuracy. In order to compare the screening and confirmatory techniques, several human specimens were analyzed to demonstrate the importance of using a specific analytical method, such as LC-MS, to detect designer drugs in serum as immunoassays lack cross-reactivity with the novel compounds. Overall, minimal cross-reactivity was observed, highlighting the conclusion that these presumptive screens cannot detect many of the designer drugs and that a confirmatory technique, such as the LC-MS, is required for the comprehensive forensic toxicological analysis of designer drugs.

The advantages of a printed circuit board over traditional electrical cabinets on an electric boat

Lampa Fjellström, Pontus January 2021 (has links)
This thesis aims to prove the concept of replacing traditional electrical cabinets with PCBs on a fully electric boat. The existing solution with two electrical cabinets is considered expensive and believed to be replacable by PCBs.  Means of protections for PCBs are evaluated with regard to moisture, salt and vibrations. Two PCBs are designed to carry a current up to 60 ampere for a longer period of time. A cost analysis of 1, 10 and 100 PCBs are made to compare the cost of the proposed design to the existing solution. The result is a functioning prototype, a proposed design, cost analysis and suggested means of protections for withstanding the elements that the PCBs are exposed to at sea.Verification of the design is done by PDN Analysis and load testing with thermal imaging to monitor the temperature rise. Soley this is not enough to fully validate the design as further tests are needed and the local juristrictions has to be met before implementing these PCBs in consumer equipment.

Design systems from a developer’s perspective : What aspects of communication between developers and designers need to change in order to prevent communication breakdown when creating design systems?

Ziegler, Antonia, Atanasov, Yordan Nikolov January 2021 (has links)
Design systems have gained traction in the last few years. They have been primarily used by big tech companies to improve collaboration between designers and developers and to speed up the development process of their digital products. There is no formal definition of what a design system is and what it should entail as of the time of writing. It is believed that communication breakdown during the creation of design systems occurs because designers and developers do not understand each other’s fields of expertise. The purpose of this study is to explore common aspects that cause communication breakdown between developers and designers when creating a design system. The method of choice for this study is semi- structured interviews conducted with frontend/web developers, exploring their views and experiences. The results of this study indicate that there are both similarities and differences between peoples’ views on design systems and that the lack of understanding of a developer's field of work can be seen as an aspect that can cause a communication breakdown. Furthermore, the results imply that one of the factors which can contribute to a more successful understanding of the handoff for developers is the visualization of the design. The major limitations of this study are the lack of scientific literature on the topic of design systems as well as the limited number of participants.
