Success facotrs for the adoption of bio based packaging

Tariq, Shahzad January 2013 (has links)
This paper is written as a contribution towards a sustainable society in the context of bio-basedpackaging. A few decades back, the world was looking for processes that were efficient in termsof output and quality, but now the situation has changed. The world is looking for solutionswhich are not only effective and efficient but also are sustainable and positive for not justeconomics but also for the society. This paper is also an effort to elaborate the potential of biobasedpackaging. However, this thesis covers the aspects presented by different key playersalong the value chain which increases the contribution of this thesis towards the real world.Other motive of this paper is to give attention to the plastic waste accumulation in the seas. This paper will make use of Geels’s Multi Level Perspective theory along with Roger’s adoptiontheory to enlighten the key factors for adoption of bio-based packaging. Geels’s theory willintroduce the concepts of evolution of a niche level product into a main stream market product. The evolution does not only depend upon the attributes of the product, it depends on many macroelements like landscape pressure or sudden change in the outside environment.Different hypothesis or proposals are presented in this paper on the basis of Geels’s MultilevelPerspective (MLP) theory to demonstrate the possible situation for bio-based packaging productto be either accepted or rejected by the key players in the current regime. The most influentialfactors discovered during the research process are price, supplier strength and technologicalfeasibility of bio-based packaging with the status quo.The dilemma for the key players in this economically unstable situation is investment associatedwith the new packaging schemes and the incentives or business logic in bio-based packagingmaterials. Currently, the concentration of key players in this business arena is more on costsaving by making the process more efficient and product differentiation which somehow makesthe road to success for bio-based packaging much narrower.Nevertheless, bio-based packaging has shown great potential in terms of technological feasibilityand improvement in price. If bio-based packaging opt economies of scale, price can effectivelyimprove and make bio-based packaging competent. Bio-based packaging seems the legitimatesolution for the thousands of tons of plastic waste accumulating in the seas of the world which isalready having severe effects on sea life which will indirectly affect human health.A few decades back, the manufacturing practices focused entirely on improving the ways thatcould help in achieving more quantities by optimizing the processing parameters. Today, theworld has changed critical concerns like sustainability in context of environment and society hastriggered the need of manufacturing practices that are not economically beneficial but alsobeneficial in context of environment and society. In the world of plastic, bio-based packagingproducts are considered to solve the issues mentioned above. This paper will highlight anddiscuss critical parameters that bio-based packaging has to counter in order to incorporate itselfinto mainstream market.

Repositories Recreated : Working Towards Improved Interoperability and Integration by a Co-operative Approach in Sweden

Andersson, Stefan, Svensson, Aina January 2013 (has links)
Recently the technological and organizational infrastructures of institutional repositories have been questioned. For example the British so-called Finch report  from last summer argued that further development, as well as higher standards of accessibility of repositories, are needed in order to make them better integrated and interoperable to ultimately bring greater use by both authors and readers. Not only the technical frameworks and presumably low usage levels are criticized but also the lack of “clear policies on such matters as the content they will accept, the uses to which it may be put, and the role that they will play in preservation”. The report concludes that: “In practice patterns of deposit are patchy”. As in the UK, today, all universities and university colleges in Sweden, except a couple of very small and specialized ones, do have an institutional repository. A majority (around 80%) are working together on a co-operative basis within the DiVA Publishing System with the Electronic Publishing Centre at Uppsala University Library acting as the technical and organizational hub. Because the system is jointly funded, and the members contribute according to their size, it has been possible even for smaller institutions with limited resources to run a repository with exactly the same functionalities as the biggest universities. In this presentation we want to demonstrate the ever-increasing importance of institutional repositories in Sweden. Starting more than a decade ago the DiVA Consortium has, for some time, been addressing the problems now raised by the Finch report in a number of areas.

Evaluation of Sindbis-M2e Virus Vector as a Universal Influenza A Vaccine

Vuong, Christine 2012 August 1900 (has links)
Although avian influenza virus (AIV) infections in domestic poultry are uncommon, transmission of avian influenza from wild waterfowl reservoirs does occur. Depopulation of the infected flock is the typical response to AIV outbreaks in domestic chicken production, causing a loss in profits and accumulation of unexpected expenses. Because it is impossible to know which of many virus subtypes will cause an outbreak, it is not feasible for the U.S. to stockpile vaccines against all possible avian influenza threats. Currently, the U.S. does not routinely vaccinate chickens against influenza due to the inability to differentiate infected from vaccinated animals (DIVA), which would place limitations on its trade markets. A Sindbis virus vector expressing the PR8 influenza strain's M2e peptide was developed as a potential universal DIVA vaccine. M2e is a conserved peptide amongst influenza A viruses; M2e-specific antibodies induce antibody-dependent cytotoxicity or phagocytosis of infected cells, reducing production and shedding of AIV during infection. In this study, chickens were vaccinated at one-month-of-age with parental (E2S1) or recombinant Sindbis viruses expressing the PR8 M2e peptide (E2S1-M2e) by subcutaneous or intranasal routes at high (106 pfu) or low (103 pfu) dosages. Chickens were boosted at 2-weeks post-initial vaccination using the same virus, route, and dosage, then challenged with low pathogenic H5N3 AIV at 0.2 mL of 106/mL EID50 2-weeks post-boost. Serum samples were collected at 1-week and 2-weeks post-vaccination, 2-weeks post-boost, and 2-weeks post-challenge and screened for PR8 M2e-specific IgY antibody production by ELISA. Both high and low dose subcutaneously, as well as high dose intranasally vaccinated E2S1-M2e groups produced significantly higher levels of PR8 M2e-specific IgY antibodies as early as 1-week post-vaccination, while the uninoculated control and E2S1 groups remained negative for all pre-challenge time points. M2e-specific IgY antibodies capable of binding the challenge H5N3 M2e peptide were detected in groups with existing vaccine-induced M2e-specific antibodies pre-challenge, suggesting antibody M2e cross-reactivity. After challenge, all groups developed M2e-specific IgY antibodies and high HI titers, verifying successful AIV infection during challenge and production of hemagglutinin-specific antibodies. Viral shedding titers 4-days post-challenge were used to measure vaccine efficacy and were similar amongst all groups. Microneutralization assay results confirmed that post-boost serum samples, containing only M2e-specific antibodies, were unable to neutralize AIV in vitro. Although the E2S1-M2e vaccine was capable of producing high levels of M2e-specific IgY antibodies when inoculated subcutaneously, these antibodies were not able to reduce viral shedding and therefore did not protect chickens from AIV.

A Web-based System for Publishing Publications to Both Växjö University Library and RICS

ul haq, Israr January 2009 (has links)
The Department of Computer Science of Växjö University has a web based system where thesis finished by the students as well as available thesis can be seen. Research work made by the faculty members of the Department is also available here. The Växjö University Library also has a web- based System called DiVA. DiVA stands for Digitala Vetenskapliga Arkivet (Academic Archive Online). It enables students and researchers to publish their research work to University Library. Students and Researchers can also search, research made by other researchers. Each year researcher/student publishes their result in conference papers, journal articles, thesis report, books etc. These publications should be register both at the Växjö University Library and RICS (Research in Computer Science) web site in a systematic way so to avoid any kind of redundancy and errors. To develop a system which follow the principle” publish once and view every where” is the objective of this project. The System makes it possible to extract the already published publication at DiVA and put that publication’s information into RICS web site. When a user requests for registering a publication, the system should verify whether he/she is eligible to register a publication. If he/she qualifies, that is if he/she is a registered user, then the system will register the publication along with the required information like title, author, date of publication, kind of publication etc. on different Web sites. The web-based publication information system was   implemented in C#.NET. The project was successfully completed but the deliver system requires more live testing.

When a Native Becomes Foreign in his/her Own Homeland: A Review of the Foreign Accent Syndrome : A Review of the Foreign Accent Syndrome

Guimaraes Svensson, Marieide January 2012 (has links)
FAS is a speech disorder characterized by changes to the normal speech patterns of the native language. This speech impairment is usually due to stroke or brain injury. Segmental, suprasegmental and prosodic features are altered. FAS speakers’ speech is perceived as foreign rather than disordered. It may be because the speech remains highly accurate and the impairments are generally within the permissible boundaries of the phonological and phonetic variants of the language. In terms of perceptual impression, FAS patients’ speech is placed between speakers with a really foreign accent and the native speaker. Some researchers propose that the impression of foreignness in FAS speakers’ accent may be caused by the listeners misinterpretation of speech markers. Lesions leading to FAS are still not completely understood; some hypothesize that the lesion is small or even down to the size of a single gyrus. New evidence suggests that FAS may be a disorder of the articulate velocity and position maps. The syndrome can be life changing to those affected. Patients report that they are no longer able to recognize themselves speaking a new accent. A whole new persona is born when the accent emerges. This paper presents a review of the syndrome’s features, including its neuropsychological/neuroanatomic aspects, its relationship with AoS and dysarthria, and the syndrome’s psychological implications.

Category-Led Supply Management with a SupplierLifecycle Approach : A Case Study

Garza de Leon, Margarita January 2012 (has links)
As companies find better ways of dealing with creating value and cost efficiencies in their Procurement areas, one key trend is the concept of Category-led Supply Management (CLSM). CLSM is a concept that takes a cross-functional team that leads a category of services and/or products towards developing sourcing strategies that comply with the corporate objectives through the logical grouping of similar expense items. Each group is driven to satisfy the unique sourcing, contract, payment, performance, and attributes of each spending category. In this process, CLSM creates a strong partnership with suppliers and an ongoing Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) that will satisfy business needs while maximizing the value delivered through the supply base. Considering that the Supplier is always one critical factor present from the start to the end of the ongoing Strategic Sourcing process, seeing the Supplier as a Lifecycle Management process can help companies recognize their suppliers as a prime source of value to the organization that plays a central row in the success of the Procurement Strategy. The following thesis will analyze, in a research method of a case study, a specific Category in a company and explore the relationship that existed between the supplier and the company to illustrate the importance of Strategic Sourcing and how it is implemented in practice by companies. The case study helped understand the importance of involving Supplier Relationships in a Strategic Sourcing process. Finally, the Case study enlightened how having a milestone-by-milestone methodology helped understand how a business operates and how procurement activity impacts upon them when capturing savings by managing a Category.
