Response comparison of an optically stimulated luminescent dosimeter, a direct-ion storage dosimeter, and a thermoluminescence dosimeterHernandez, Pete Jevon 15 May 2009 (has links)
This study was undertaken to compare the response of three dosimeters to
different environments. Comanche Peak Nuclear Power Plant wants to replace the
current badge of record. The RaDos DIS-1 direct-ion storage dosimeter (DIS-1) and the
Landauer InLight optically stimulated luminescence dosimeter (OSL) are the two
candidates for replacement of the Panasonic UD-802 thermoluminescence dosimeter
(TLD). The dosimeters were compared in five categories: dose linearity, dose-rate
linearity, fade response, humidity response, and the angular dependence of the
dosimeters.
The major results include verified linear relationship evidence for dose and doserate
and a better fade response for both the DIS-1 and OSL. The TLDs faded by 9.2%
over a month and the DIS-1 and OSL faded by 4.2% and 1%, respectively. Following a
dose of 557.5 mrem, the dosimeters were exposed to different relative humidites. The
dose to the DIS-1 and OSL did not change drastically while the TLDs dose readout was
reduced by 10%. Finally, the angular dependence of the dosimeters was compared and
the worst responses were 66% at 90° in the horizontal orientation for the OSL and 1.7% at 90° in the horizontal orientation for the DIS-1. Based on the results of these tests the
OSL seems like a more viable candidate for the new badge or record.

Implementation of real-time DIS H.264 Encoder for Airborne RecorderNam, Ju-Hun, Kim, Seong-Jong, Kim, Sung-Min, Lee, Nam-Sik, Kim, Jin-Hyung 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2012 Conference Proceedings / The Forty-Eighth Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 22-25, 2012 / Town and Country Resort & Convention Center, San Diego, California / When developing a video compression system in black box for aircraft, it is necessary to consider the characteristic of the images and the surrounding environment. The images captured in and out of aircraft have excessive movement-related issues, which make the results difficult to analyze and interpret. Failure to remove the tremors in the video component inevitably leads to poor compression efficiency and degrades the video imaging performance in the airborne black box. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a Compression System which can stabilize the video-image and efficiently utilize high compression recording for aircraft without special hardware. Based on the current situation, we suggest a real-time electronic video stabilization algorithm for airborne recorder which recovers shaky images simply and efficiently to work beside a developed stabilization system based on the H.264 Encoder using DSP.

Watching the Wolf Tear Down the House: An Autoethnographic Examination of Living with Lupus in The Wolf InsidePalmer, Savannah 01 May 2017 (has links)
Autoethnography is a research method that relies on connecting personal narrative to larger social issues, using writing and/or performance to draw those connections for an audience and critique those issues along the way. Autoethnographers, in a vulnerable act, tell their own stories to make these connections and critiques, and ask their audiences to help them change the way society functions, to help achieve social justice by engaging with and helping to solve these issues. This project explores a specific autoethnographic work—The Wolf Inside, a solo performance piece dealing with the dis/ableist experiences of the author in their journey toward diagnosis, treatment, and good quality of life with systemic lupus erythematosus. It examines the implications of autoethnography as a method of educating audiences about invisible disabilities like lupus, confronting harmful dis/ableist behaviors, offering solutions to these issues, and functioning as a coping mechanism for the author/performer who lives with invisible disabilities.

A Database Interface System for the Preop Expert SystemPharasi, Mathabo 04 1900 (has links)
PREOP is a medical expert system which is being developed on the expert-system shell NEXPERT. PREOP determines the risk of cardiac complications for a patient about to undergo noncardiac surgery, and recommends a programme of medication intake for the patient. PREOP's final database and hardware requirements are uncertain, and so are its final functionalities. These uncertainties necessitate a database interface which facilitates overall system flexibility, maintainability, modularity, and integration with existing information systems. These objectives are best achieved by a loosely coupled database interface which is not under NEXPERT's control. PREOP-DIS is a loosely coupled database interface system for PREOP. This project uses the relational model to design PREOP' s database and implements the database on the relational DBMS SYBASE. The project implements PREOP-DIS as a C program that communicates data between PREOP and the SYBASE database by dynamically making calls to NEXPERT and to the SYBASE dataserver. / Thesis / Master of Science (MS)

Espalhamento inelástico profundo em colisões elétron-íon / Deep inelastic scattering in electron-ion collisionsCazaroto, Erike Roberto 13 October 2009 (has links)
In this work we considered two subjects of QCD at high energies. The nuclear gluon distributions and the parton saturation. The currently available parametrizations of nuclear gluon distribution in the literature are very different among themselves. We show that it is possible to relate the gluon distribution in a nucleus at high energies to nuclear inclusive observables. This will allow us to distinguish between the different parametrizations when new experimental data become available. The second subject considered, parton saturation, is currently very important, and the existence or not of this phenomenon will be confirmed at the LHC and at the future eRHIC. In the case of saturation we show that inclusive observables are not very useful to indicate if parton saturation occurs at high energies. Our conclusion was that to detect saturation effects, instead of these observables we must focus on the diffractive observables, which are much more sensitive to big dipoles and will correspond to a significant fraction of the observed events.

Conception et synthèse d'aminoglycosides guidées par l'ARN / Design and synthesis of aminoglycosides guided by RNAObszynski, Julie 10 June 2016 (has links)
The development of new antibiotics is a major public health issue. Given the high potential of aminoglycosides as antibiotics, these compounds have aroused great interest in many research groups. However, despite their maturity, their use is still limited because of their toxicity and the increasing development of resistance mechanisms to aminoglycosides. To better understand the problems inherent to their use, it is crucial to understand their action a cellular level, and to study the interactions with their molecular targets (RNA and protein). In addition to their antibiotic power, aminoglycosides are also universal ligands for several RNAs, capable of specific interactions with RNAs of HIV-1: DIS, TAR and RRE. The elaboration of modified aminoglycosides presents a huge advantage because the domain of application, and therefore the benefits, are important. Nevertheless, the structural complexity of these molecules is a major constraint, chemoselective functionalization is essential but unfortunately poorly described in the literature. In this work, we developed two approaches to target the DIS and/or the A site of the bacterialribosome. The first one, unique but challenging is based on the concept of in situ click chemistry. The second approach is conventional and is based on the selective functionalization of some keypositions of aminoglycosides.

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 17-20, 1994 / Town & Country Hotel and Conference Center, San Diego, California / The Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) concept, since its inception, has been
defined into three separate but distinct areas of service.
• Viewing of data in the real-time environment.
• Multiple range viewing and usage of"real-time data."
• Problems with the sharing of information through DIS.
This paper will discuss the DIS concept and some of the various methods available to
display this data to users of the system.
