A Semantic Map Approach to English Articles (a, the, and Ø)Butler, Brian 11 July 2013 (has links)
The three structural possibilities marking a noun with an English article are a, the, and Ø (the absence of an article). Although these structural possibilities are simple, they encode a multitude of semantic and pragmatic functions, and it is these complex form-function interactions that this study explores and explains using a semantic map model. The semantic map that is proposed contains three dimensions, which I refer to as Grammatical Number, Referentiality, and Discourse Mode. Each of these dimensions contains a number of further semantic values or pragmatic functions - which I will label "attributes" - that are implicated in English article choice. Various semantic map versions are tested and compared with a methodological approach that uses data collected in a controlled protocol from an elicited conversational discourse. The version that performed best is used as a basis for proposing a comprehensive semantic map that includes the following dimensions and dimensional attributes: a Number dimension with 3 attributes (singular, plural, and uncountable); a Referentiality dimension with 11 attributes, including 7 referential attributes that describe kinds of identifiability (proper names, shared lexis, shared speech situation, frame, current discourse, identifiable to speaker only ["new reference"], and identifiable to neither speaker nor listener [non-specific]) as well as 4 non-referential attributes (categorization, general non-referential expressions, finite verb [verb-object] "noun incorporation", and idioms); and a Discourse Mode dimension with 4 attributes (headline, immediacy, normal, and reintroducing).
This model of English articles contributes to the field of research on articles as well as to the field of English language instruction and learning. In addition, it is suggested that the methodological paradigm used to test the semantic map model may be useful as an experimental paradigm for testing semantic maps of other constructions and languages.

THE DISCOURSE FUNCTION OF KOINE GREEK VERB FORMS IN NARRATIVE: TESTING CURRENT PROPOSALS IN THE BOOK OF JUDITHGraham, Michael Todd 09 November 2018 (has links)
The objective of this dissertation is to test some major theories on the discourse function of the Greek indicative verb-forms in narrative. Since the publication of Stanley Porter and Buist Fanning’s doctoral dissertations, verbal aspect has been a major area of research among scholars. Although the debate and research concerning the aspect of Greek verbs continues to be at the forefront of Greek grammatical studies, the question that begs to be answered is whether their answers can satisfactorily account for the varied verb-forms throughout the entirety of a historical narrative. This dissertation seeks to answer this question by testing current proposals on the discourse function of Greek indicative verb-forms within the narrative of Judith.
Chapter 1 introduces the thesis of the dissertation, surveys the literature related to Greek grammar, and discusses the need to focus on discourse grammar. Chapter 2 surveys the literature related to discourse grammar, provides a methodology, and discusses the rationale for the selection of the book of Judith. Chapter 3 tests the function of the aorist and the imperfect within the book of Judith. Specifically, it tests the proposal—unless intentionally marked, the aorist is used to describe mainline events, it provides the foundation for the narrative, and thus moves it forward. Whereas the imperfect is used with non-events, giving descriptive or background information, rather than moving it forward. Chapter 4 examines the function of the present within the narrative of Judith. Namely, it evaluates Runge’s rejection of Stanley Porter’s claim that the present indicative verb-form is semantically marked for prominence. Chapter 5 observes the function of the perfect within the narrative of Judith. Specifically, it evaluates the thesis—the perfect is used to show the relevance of the action, idea, or situation to the current discourse. Chapter 6 provides a concluding summary of each chapter in this dissertation and suggests areas for fruitful future research.

Como principais referências, consideram-se: o trabalho pioneiro de J. D. Adopting a functionalist perspective, it explores: the uses of each particle within the discourse macrostructure; their functions and their contexts of occurrence; and the way they help to articulate and organize discourse structure. In keeping with this goal, this study performs qualitative analyses of all occurrences of the aforementioned particles in the selected corpus and compares them with earlier descriptions. Two main parameters of analysis are employed: the position that each particle takes in the discourse structure, and the type of contrast that it designates. The acquisition of Chinese connectives by second language learnersLu, Yuan 01 May 2017 (has links)
This study investigates the acquisition of Chinese connectives by second language learners under the theoretical framework of usage-based theory. Language is not a random set of words and phrases, but rather a coherent and cohesive set of utterances. As such, learning a second language (L2) entails, among other processes, learners’ development of employing cohesive devices to construct a coherent discourse in their target language. One type of cohesive devices frequently used by L2 learners is connectives. In Chinese, connectives are utilized to denote various semantic relationships between the clauses in a compound sentence. Due to their flexibility and complexity in nature, Chinese connectives present a huge challenge to L2 learners’ learning. However, to date no study has been set up to explore the learners’ development of Chinese connectives within L2 Chinese research community.
This study aims to fill this gap in the literature and build an L2 acquisitional model of Chinese connectives under the theoretical framework of Constructionist Usage-based Theory. Constructionist Usage-based Theory maintains that the basic unit of language is constructions and that the syntactic and lexical form of constructions and its corresponding semantic and discourse functions are conventionalized in language usage. According to these notions, language learning is believed to be driven by the factors grounded in the form and function of constructions in language usage. This study specifically examines how the factors of frequency, form, function, contingency (interaction of form and function), and L1-tuned attention affect L2 Chinese learners’ development of Chinese connectives. Furthermore, the study investigates the learners’ knowledge about the distribution of Chinese connectives across different proficiency levels.
Specifically, this study aims to address four research questions: (1) what is the relationship between L2 learners’ proficiency level and language background and the acquisition of Chinese connectives?; (2) do L2 learners overuse or underuse Chinese connectives in constructing responses when the other in a pair is given and what errors do L2 learners make when using Chinese connectives?; (3) how can 12 target pairs of Chinese connectives be categorized into (hierarchical) groups based on L2 Chinese learners’ performance?; and (4) how do theoretically-motivated models represent the factorial structure underlying L2 acquisition of Chinese connectives?
To address the four research questions, this study elicited L2 Chinese learners’ performance in two tests: a mini-discourse completion test and a form-function association test. In the mini-discourse completion test, learners were required to supply a missing clause to complete a three-clause discourse in which one of paired connectives was embedded; in the form-function association test, learners were asked to choose options of paired connectives to link two given clauses where connectives were omitted.
Results showed that the development of all Chinese paired connectives was positively correlated to L2 learners’ L2 proficiency level. Learners with heritage language background seemed to have an advantage over less frequent and less prototypical connectives. Predominantly, L2 learners underused Chinese connectives, resulting from the cross-linguistic influence of disparity between English and Chinese connectives at the structural level in particular and between English and Chinese textual cohesion at the discourse level in general. Based on L2 learners’ performances in the two tests, the 12 pairs of Chinese connectives were classifier into four hierarchical groups. Confirmatory factor analyses showed that the usage-based factors (i.e., frequency, co-occurrence strength, formulaicity, prototypicality, contingency, and L1-tuned attention) jointly determined the L2 acquisition and development of Chinese connectives in a complex, adaptive, dynamic manner. Summarizing these findings, this study proposed a usage-based acquisitional model of L2 Chinese connectives, providing theoretical contributions to the usage-based theory and pedagogical implications for Chinese connectives.

Previous issue date: 2016 / This research presents an integrated analysis of the syntactic, semantic and pragmatic characteristics of the tradition ally called “apposition clause”. The theory is based on the assumptions of Functional Discourse Grammar (FDG), developed by Hengeveld and Mackenzie (2008), that basic unit of analysis is the Discourse Act. For the definition and description of the discourse functions of the encapsulated apposition, we take as support the researches of Quirk et al (1985), Meyer (1992), Nogueira (1999, 2012), Decat (2010) e Hannay; Keizer (2005). Methodologically, the research presents a description course that starts from the formal characteristics, frequency analysis with the use of the SPSS program for a design of the prototypical behavior of this structure and, finally, presents a qualitative analysis of the discourse functions of the structures in question based on a corpus composed by 108 occurrences from articles of opinion published in Folha de São Paulo between 2006 to 2010. In the analysis, we chose to describe the encapsulated apposition as the relative headless or non - nucleated such as proposed by FDG and to determine the attributive feature of this structure. The most frequent structure is composed of demonstrative pronouns + restrictive adjective clause, encapsulating State – of - assairs. The discourse functions assumed by these structures were defined based on the na ture of the information they add to the textual flow. Thus, we define the following basic functions: Evaluation, Explanation, Developing, Evidencing / Confirming , Conclusion. Assim, definimos as seguintes funções básicas: Avaliação, Explicação, Desdobramento, Constatação/Ratificação, Conclusão.

As a result of the analysis, we find, among others, the following: the evidential strategies in printed courseware for higher education students in distance mode have syntactic, semantic and pragmatic-discursive indicate as font type and how to type evidentially predominant, respectively, and a third person defined evidentially reportative, showing a gap of authors in relation to the contents, considering the use of so-called" argument from authority" in theoretical texts; evidentially that the inferred types and genericity occur but are not frequent, and the type of event perception was not found, since the contents in this type of writing are more conceptual, that is, assume a more abstract nature and that, on the access mode, there is a predominance of reports of 2nd hand, which is not surprising, since they were predominantly from evidentially reportative and source type third person set, the linguistic marks of accession of enunciating the source indicated in relation to a particular content reported in this material occur in insignificant, however, when used constitute the source of qualifying adjectives, verbs and others, such as adverbs and argumentative operators, the producer of textbooks analyzed prefers not to show any kind of rebuttal/out the source of the information, which is not frequent co-occurrence of linguistic strategies of epistemic modality evidential strategy used in the source of the ensured content and when used produce a low commitment, the verb is the medium most used language to express evidentiality, there was a predominance ante position by brand evidential the source and content, the source type annunciator is on, most often, the evidentiality inferred as the source type defined third person is linked most commonly to evidentiality reportative and sources of the type common domain and third person undefined bind, more commonly, the evidentiality generality, that the types and genericity evidential reportative promoting effect of low commitment, while the inferred type is linked most commonly to an average commitment; membership mark that serves to indicate a greater commitment producer in relation to textual content asserted, that when the source is the utterer, the effect is of a medium commitment, considering that the producer of printed courseware for DL uses the first person plural, as in so-called " plural of modesty, "that when the source is indefinite third person there is a balance between the medium and low commitment, that the use of the third person defined source indicates, in general, a low textual commitment of the producer, and that means are related, most commonly, low commitment.
