Scale-Dependent Community Theory for Streams and Other Linear Habitats.

The maintenance of species diversity occurs at the regional scale but depends on interacting processes at the full range of lower scales. Although there is a long history of study of regional diversity as an emergent property, analyses of fully multiscale dynamics are rare. Here, we use scale transition theory for a quantitative analysis of multiscale diversity maintenance with continuous scales of dispersal and environmental variation in space and time. We develop our analysis with a model of a linear habitat, applicable to streams or coastlines, to provide a theoretical foundation for the long-standing interest in environmental variation and dispersal, including downstream drift. We find that the strength of regional coexistence is strongest when local densities and local environmental conditions are strongly correlated. Increasing dispersal and shortening environmental correlations weaken the strength of coexistence regionally and shift the dominant coexistence mechanism from fitness-density covariance to the spatial storage effect, while increasing local diversity. Analysis of the physical and biological determinants of these mechanisms improves understanding of traditional concepts of environmental filters, mass effects, and species sorting. Our results highlight the limitations of the binary distinction between local communities and a species pool and emphasize species coexistence as a problem of multiple scales in space and time.

Altered natal dispersal at the range periphery: The role of behavior, resources, and maternal condition

Natal dispersal outcomes are an interplay between environmental conditions and individual phenotypes. Peripheral, isolated populations may experience altered environmental conditions and natal dispersal patterns that differ from populations in contiguous landscapes. We document nonphilopatric, sex-biased natal dispersal in an endangered small mammal, the Mt. Graham red squirrel (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus grahamensis), restricted to a single mountain. Other North American red squirrel populations are shown to have sex-unbiased, philopatric natal dispersal. We ask what environmental and intrinsic factors may be driving this atypical natal dispersal pattern. We test for the influence of proximate factors and ultimate drivers of natal dispersal: habitat fragmentation, local population density, individual behavior traits, inbreeding avoidance, competition for mates, and competition for resources, allowing us to better understand altered natal dispersal patterns at the periphery of a species' range. A juvenile squirrel's body condition and its mother's mass in spring (a reflection of her intrinsic quality and territory quality) contribute to individual behavioral tendencies for movement and exploration. Resources, behavior, and body condition have the strongest influence on natal dispersal distance, but affect males and females differently. Male natal dispersal distance is positively influenced by its mother's spring body mass and individual tendency for movement; female natal dispersal distance is negatively influenced by its mother's spring body mass and positively influenced by individual tendency for movement. An apparent feedback between environmental variables and subsequent juvenile behavioral state contributes to an altered natal dispersal pattern in a peripheral population, highlighting the importance of studying ecological processes at the both range center and periphery of species' distributions.

Grasshopper sparrows on the move: patterns and causes of within-season breeding dispersal in a declining grassland songbird

Mobile animals such as birds frequently engage in breeding dispersal, but the factors shaping this behavior are not well understood. In mid-continental grasslands, preliminary evidence suggested that Grasshopper Sparrows (Ammodramus savannarum) engaged in breeding dispersal within a single breeding season. This intriguing pattern shaped my research questions: (1) what are the patterns of within-season breeding dispersal in Grasshopper Sparrows? (2) why do some individual sparrows disperse, and others do not? and (3) what shapes settlement decisions following dispersal? I tested hypotheses based on spatial and temporal variation in nest predation, nest parasitism, and food availability. I studied Grasshopper Sparrows at 18 experimentally-managed watersheds with different fire and grazing regimes at Konza Prairie Biological Station during 2013-2015. To describe patterns, I combined re-sighting of 779 marked individuals, territory mapping, and radio-telemetry to quantify territory densities, turnover, and dispersal distances. To determine if nest predation or nest parasitism affected dispersal, I monitored the fate of 223 nests. I estimated food intake rates using plasma metabolites, and prey availability using sweep sampling. Densities of territorial Grasshopper Sparrows varied seasonally in management-specific ways. Turnover was remarkably high, with over half of territorial males being replaced each month. Over a third of males changed territories within-season, dispersing 0.1-9 km between breeding attempts. Dispersal decisions were related to past nest predation, but not nest parasitism. Dispersal likely yields fitness benefits, as sparrows that dispersed increased their chances of nest survival by 23% relative to site-faithful individuals. However, food availability did not affect settlement decisions. My study provides the first evidence of within-season breeding dispersal in Grasshopper Sparrows, and represents one of few tests of alternative hypotheses explaining dispersal decisions of songbirds. My results are consistent with a growing literature on the role of predation shaping dispersal, but suggest, somewhat surprisingly, that food is not important in post-dispersal habitat selection. High dispersal capacity coupled with adaptability to temporal and spatial change may be typical of grassland songbirds, implying that demographic studies and management decisions must consider their mobility for conservation.

Soil seed banks near rubbing trees indicate dispersal of plant species into forests by wild boar

Current knowledge about processes that generate long-distance dispersal of plants is still limited despite its importance for persistence of populations and colonization of new potential habitats. Today wild large mammals are presumed to be important vectors for long-distance transport of diaspores within and between European temperate forest patches, and in particular wild boars recently came into focus. Here we use a specific habit of wild boar, i.e. wallowing in mud and subsequent rubbing against trees, to evaluate epizoic dispersal of vascular plant diaspores. We present soil seed bank data from 27 rubbing trees versus 27 control trees from seven forest areas in Germany. The mean number of viable seeds and the plant species number were higher in soil samples near rubbing trees compared with control trees. Ten of the 20 most frequent species were more frequent, and many species exclusively appeared in the soil samples near rubbing trees. The large number of plant species and seeds – approximated > 1000 per tree – in the soils near rubbing trees is difficult to explain unless the majority were dispersed by wild boar. Hooked and bristly diaspores, i.e. those adapted to epizoochory, were more frequent, above that many species with unspecialised diaspores occurred exclusively near rubbing trees. Different to plant species closely tied to forest species which occur both in forest and open vegetation, and non-forest species were more frequent near rubbing trees compared with controls. These findings are consistent with previous studies on diaspore loads in the coats and hooves of shot wild boars. However, our method allows to identify the transport of diaspores from the open landscape into forest stands where they might especially emerge after disturbance, and a clustered distribution of epizoochorically dispersed seeds. Moreover, accumulation of seeds of wetness indicators near rubbing trees demonstrates directed dispersal of plant species inhabiting wet places between remote wallows. / Das aktuelle Wissen über Prozesse, die zur Fernausbreitung von Pflanzen führen, ist trotz ihrer Bedeutung für das Überleben von Populationen und die Besiedlung neuer potenzieller Habitate noch immer sehr begrenzt. Wildlebende Großsäuger sind heutzutage vermutlich wichtige Vektoren für den Ferntransport von Diasporen innerhalb und zwischen den einzelnen Waldflächen in Mitteleuropa, und speziell das Wildschwein (Sus scrofa L.) spielt dabei offenbar eine herausragende Rolle. Wir nutzen hier ein spezifisches Verhalten des Wildschweins – Suhlen im Schlamm und nachfolgendes Scheuern an sogenannten Malbäumen – um die epizoochore Ausbreitung von Gefäßpflanzen-Diasporen einzuschätzen. Dargestellt werden die Ergebnisse von Samenbank-Untersuchungen von 27 Malbäumen im Vergleich zu 27 Kontrollbäumen aus sieben Waldgebieten in Deutschland. Sowohl die mittlere Zahl lebensfähiger Samen als auch die Artenzahl waren höher in Bodenproben neben Malbäumen. Zehn der 20 in der Samenbank verbreitetsten Pflanzenarten hatten hier ihren Schwerpunkt, und viele Arten kamen ausschließlich in den neben Malbäumen gewonnenen Proben vor. Die große Zahl von Pflanzenarten und Samen – zumindest > 1000 pro Baum – im Boden an Malbäumen lässt sich nur durch die Aktivität der Wildschweine erklären. Mit Haken oder Borsten ausgestattete, d.h. an Epizoochorie angepasste Diasporen waren häufiger, aber auch viele Arten mit unspezialisierten Diasporen kamen ausschließlich in der Samenbank bei Malbäumen vor. Anders als weitgehend an Wald gebundene Pflanzenarten waren solche, die sowohl im Wald und im Offenland vorkommen, sowie nicht im Wald vorkommende Arten häufiger neben Malbäumen als neben Kontrollbäumen. Diese Befunde stimmen mit denen früherer Untersuchungen von Diasporenladungen im Fell und in den Hufen geschossener Wildschweine überein. Unsere Methode erlaubt darüber hinaus aber die Identifizierung des Diasporentransports aus dem Offenland in die Waldbestände, wo sie insbesondere nach Störungen keimen dürften, sowie einer ungleichmäßigen Verteilung epizoochor ausgebreiteter Diasporen. Außerdem zeigt die Akkumulation von Samen von Nässezeigern neben den Malbäumen eine gezielte Ausbreitung nasse Standorte bewohnender Pflanzenarten zwischen entfernt gelegenen Suhlen.

Non-random dispersal by ants : long-term field data versus model predictions of population spread of a forest herb

Myrmecochory, i.e. dispersal of seeds by ants towards and around their nests, plays an important role in temperate forests. Yet hardly any study has examined plant population spread over several years and the underlying joint contribution of a hierarchy of dispersal modes and plant demography. We used a seed-sowing approach with three replicates to examine colonization patterns of Melampyrum pratense, an annual myrmecochorous herb, in a mixed Scots pine forest in northeastern Germany. Using a spatially explicit individualbased (SEIB) model population patterns over 4 years were explained by short-distance transport of seeds by small ant species with high nest densities, resulting in random spread. However, plant distributions in the field after another 4 years were clearly deviating from model predictions. Mean annual spread rate increased from 0.9 m to 5.1 m per year, with a clear inhomogeneous component. Obviously, after a lag-phase of several years, non-random seed dispersal by large red wood ants (Formica rufa) was determining the species’ spread, thus resulting in stratified dispersal due to interactions with different-sized ant species. Hypotheses on stratified dispersal, on dispersal lag, and on non-random dispersal were verified using an extended SEIB model, by comparison of model outputs with field patterns (individual numbers, population areas, and maximum distances). Dispersal towards red wood ant nests together with seed loss during transport and redistribution around nests were essential features of the model extension. The observed lag-phase in the initiation of non-random, medium-distance transport was probably due to a change of ant behaviour towards a new food source of increasing importance, being a meaningful example for a lag-phase in local plant species invasion. The results demonstrate that field studies should check model predictions wherever possible. Future research will show whether or not the M. pratense–ant system is representative for migration patterns of similar animal dispersal systems after having crossed range edges by long-distance dispersal events.

The Genetic Structure and Dispersal Patterns of the Nigeria-Cameroon Chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes ellioti)

The goal of this study was to examine several aspects of the population genetics and population biology of the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee at seven sampling locations in the south of Taraba State, Nigeria. Three of the sampling locations are within GGNP and two are situated just outside the southern boundary of GGNP. The final two sampling locations are found within Ngel Nyaki forest reserve, at each of the two forest fragments inside the reserve. Ngel Nyaki forest reserve was the focus of the study and the principal goal was to 16 determine if the community of chimpanzees at Ngel Nyaki forest reserve has become isolated from the chimpanzees at GGNP using microsatellite loci extracted from non-invasive sources of DNA. In Chapter two, the methods used to extract and amplify the DNA and the protocols used to confirm the genotypes are outlined. Chapter three examines the population structure of the chimpanzees among the regions sampled in this study, particularly addressing the question as to whether the chimpanzees at Ngel Nyaki forest reserve are isolated from the chimpanzees at GGNP. Chapter four investigates patterns of sex biased dispersal in the Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee. In Chapter five, population viability analysis is used to determine the fate of the chimpanzees at Ngel Nyaki forest reserve under a range of management scenarios. Chapter six summarizes the conclusions of the study and presents a conservation strategy to ensure the viability of the population of chimpanzees at Ngel Nyaki forest reserve.

Do herbivores facilitate seed germination and seedling recruitment of woody plants?.

Woody plant encroachment is a phenomenon whereby trees and shrubs invade grasslands or increase in an already wooded area, resulting in lower yields of herbaceous plants and a reduction in the carrying capacity of rangelands. It is not only the extent of woody plant encroachment, but also the rate at which it occurs, that is a major concern for livestock ranchers interested in herbaceous production. The question of what causes woody plant encroachment still remains unanswered. Animals consume a considerable amount of woody plant seeds during the dry season and could be responsible for spreading undesirable species to new areas or they could enhance the dispersal of species already established. However, under natural conditions, seed dispersal does not guarantee seed germination, which depends on appropriate environmental and seed survival conditions. To better understand the mechanisms involved in woody plant encroachment, we studied the effects of livestock (goats, sheep and cattle), diet quality (high-quality (Medicago sativa hay) vs. low-quality (Digtaria eriantha hay)), seed characteristics (size, shape and hardness), grass competition and fire on germination and seedling recruitment of Dichrostachys cinerea and Acacia nilotica seeds. These objectives were achieved by conducting the following trials: a) recovery and germination of D. cinerea seeds fed to goats, b) diet quality on germination of Dichrostachys cinerea and Acacia nilotica seeds fed to ruminants, c) the effects of gut passage and dung fertilization on seedling establishment of Dichrostachys cinerea and Acacia nilotica seeds and d) the effects of gut passage, dung fertilization, trampling, grass competition and fire on seedling recruitment of the two woody plant species. During the first trial, seed recovery rate of D. cinerea seeds consumed by goats, either voluntarily after mixing them with feed pellets (mixed), or by force-feeding (gavaged) and germination percentage were measured. Seed recovery for the gavaged treatment (32.7%) was significantly higher than for the mixed treatments (9.9%; P < 0.001). Seeds that passed through the digestive tract (mixed (35.5%)) and gavaged (31.2%) treatments) had a significantly higher germination percentage than untreated seeds (19.0%). A non-negligible proportion of D. cinerea seeds remained intact after chewing and passage through the digestive system, and their germination percentage increased. In the second trial, I tested the effects of animal species (goats and sheep, goats and cattle), diet quality (Medicago sativa hay and Digitaria eriantha hay), and seed characteristics (size, shape and hardness) on the effectiveness of animal seed recovery and germination of D. cinerea and A. nilotica seeds. The trial was divided into two experiments. In the first experiment, a significant interaction effect of animal species (goats, sheep), diet (high-quality hay, low-quality hay) and seed species (A. nilotica seeds, D. cinerea seeds) was found on percentage germination (P < 0.0001). There was also a higher percentage seed recovery (P < 0.009) when animals were offered high-quality hay (47.4% + 4.65) compared to low-quality hay (30.2% + 3.24). In goats fed D. eriantha hay, A. nilotica seed germination (9.38% + 3.66) was higher (P < 0.05) than goats fed D. eriantha hay and D. cinerea seeds (6.78% + 1.13). A greater germination percentage was observed in goats fed M. sativa hay with D. cinerea seeds (6.71% + 1.53) than goats fed M. sativa hay with A. nilotica seeds (2.50% + 0.97) (P < 0.05). In the second experiment, animal species had a positive impact, both on seed recovery (P < 0.0325; goats 32.0% + 6.44; cattle 50.3% + 4.27) and germination percentage (P < 0.055; goats 14.1% + 1.48; cattle 9.3% + 0.94; control: D. cinerea 0.64 + 0.06; A. nilotica 0.59 + 0.07). Animal species in experiment one (goats and sheep) and two (goats and cattle) was most important for seed recovery and germination. However, diet (M. sativa hay and D. eriantha hay) and seed species (D. cinerea, A. nilotica seeds) also had important effects on germination of seeds retrieved from experiment one. The interaction of animal species and size, diet quality, and seed characteristics (size, hardness) all played a major role in recovery of viable and scarified seeds either alone or in combination. I also studied the effects of seedling emergence, seedling establishment and recruitment of dispersed A. nilotica and D. cinerea seeds by goats and cattle under natural conditions. The interaction effect of animal species, seed recovery day and seed germination treatment/planting method was significant on seedling recruitment. Seeds retrieved from goats in the last four days and planted 2 cm in the soil with dung (25.85% ± 0.46) and seeds planted 2 cm in the soil with no dung (24.77% ± 0.35), recruited significantly better than seeds planted on top of the soil (16.98% ± 0.46). The results also indicated significant differences in percentage seedling recruitment among goats, cattle and control, with goats and cattle having the highest percentage recruitment than controls or untreated seeds. Overall, seeds can potentially germinate and recruit following passage through the gut, thereby facilitating woody plant encroachment. The results of the last trial showed that seed passage through the digestive tract of goats and cattle compared to untreated seeds (i.e. not ingested) played an important role in improving germination through seed scarification. However, seed recovery by livestock does not guarantee seedling establishment survival, survival and recruitment. Fire and grass mowing treatments affected seedling emergence, seedling survival and recruitment, most probably because of reduced grass competition, thereby reducing competition for resources (light, water and nutrients) between grasses and seedlings. In conclusion, this study indicated that animal species (goats, sheep and cattle), associated diet (low-quality vs. high-quality), seed species (D. cinerea and A. nilotica) and seed characteristics (size, shape, hardness) all played an important role in seed germination. The interactions of animal species, fire, dung, and season either directly or indirectly were pivotal in the emergence, survival and recruitment of D. cinerea and A. nilotica seedlings. Thus, acid scarification in the gut of herbivores in combination with their indirect effects (dung fertilization) and removal of grass competition (either by fire or mowing) can facilitate seedling emergence, seedling survival and recruitment of woody plant species, which may lead to woody plant encroachment. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2014.

Consideramos um efeito Allee devido à limitação de pólen, que reduz a produção de sementes. Introduzimos o efeito Allee através de uma função de probabilidade de encontro pólen-estigma que depende da densidade de plantas. Para a modelagem do processo de dispersão utilizamos equações íntegrorecursiva (IRE) tomando um núcleo de dispersão misto, que representa a dispesão local e a longa distância. Analisamos a dinâmica local do modelo determinando os pontos de equilíbrio e as suas estabilidades, para então analisar o processo de dispersão. Analisamos o modelo de dispersão por meio de simulação numérica, o que permitiu observar o deslocamento espacial da frente da invasão. Isto permitiu calcular a velocidade de expansão. Determinamos a inuência do efeito Allee, da capacidade reprodutiva e da dispersão de longa distância sobre a velocidade de expansão. Observamos que o efeito Allee torna velocidades aceleradas em velocidades constantes de expansão. A velocidade de expansão decresce com o aumento na intensidade do efeito Allee, mas aumenta com a capacidade reprodutiva. A dispersão de longa distância gera maiores velocidades de expansão, embora para fortes intensidades do efeito Allee o acréscimo na velocidade não é signifícativo em relação à velocidade gerada pela dispersão local. Os resultados mostram que apesar da dispersão contribuir ao aumento na velocidade de expansão, a dispersão também torna a população mais suscetável á extinção. / Abstract: We present a mathematical model which couples the reproductive dynamic with an Allee effect and a long distance diseprsal of an invasive plant. We consider an Allee effect due to pollen limitation, which reduces seed production. We introduce the Allee effect through a probability function that describes pollen-stigma encounters as function of the population density. To model the dispersal process we used integro-diference equations (IDE) and employed a mixed kernel which represents the local and long distance dispersal processes. We analyzed the local dynamic through the stability of their equilibrium points. For the spatial dynamic we used numerical simulations, that allowed us to observe the spatial displacement of the invasion front. This permitted us to compute the expansion speeds. We determined the inuence of the Allee effect, reproductive capacity and the long distance diseprsal on the invasion speeds. We observed than an Allee effect turns accelerating expansion speeds into constant speeds. Expansion speeds decreases with Allee effect intensity but increases with the reproductive capacity of the population. Long distance dispersal produces higher invasion speeds, but for strong intensities of the Allee effect, the increase is not significant in relation to the speeds generated by the local dispersal. O modelo mostra uma invasão através de pulsos, que atribuímos ao efeito Allee e ao comportamento de dispersão da planta / Abstract: We present an integro-difference model for a plant dispersal, which couples a reproductive dynamic with Allee effect and dispersal dynamic in a heterogeneous environment. We propose diffusion and settling model to derive theoretical dispersal kernels that represent the seed dispersal pattern generated by frugivores birds in a heterogeneous environment. The dispersal kernel derived through the model is able to reproduce the aggregate seed dispersal pattern generated by the frugivores birds under field conditions. As for the reproductive dynamic, we consider an Allee effect due to pollen limitation, which reduces seed production. We introduce the Allee effect through a probability function, which depends on the local plant density. The plant expansion behavior is analyzed, and the average expansion speed is estimated.
