Displaced Burmese in Thailand: Refugee Policies and Impact on Access and Rights, 1988-2008

Kalnin, Elizabeth 05 April 2010 (has links)
My thesis research centres on the question, how have refugee policy formation and ground level implementation impacted the conditions and experiences of displaced Burmese in Thailand from 1988 to 2008? I examine the effects of the production of subject categories through Thai national laws and practices, a bilateral agreement, and the United Nations Convention on the Status of Refugees, in order to uncover how official policies are used to manage refugees. This study addresses questions regarding policy formation and implementation toward Burmese who have fled political oppression in Burma (Myanmar) and identifies issues related to the recognition of difference and the allocation of rights in the cultural contexts of migration and integration of minority populations. The formulation and implementation of refugee policies has global implications since policy solutions in general are developed from a perspective that ignores the emergence and significance of displacement.

Displaced Spaces, Shocks, Negations: A Musical and Gestural Analysis of Stefan Wolpe's Studies for Piano, Part I (1946-48) and its Implications for Performance

Henning, Ina 07 August 2013 (has links)
The core project of this dissertation is a musical and gestural analysis of Studies, Part I: Displaced Spaces, Shocks, Negations, A New Sort of Relationship in Space, Pattern, Tempo, Diversity of Actions, Interactions and Intensities (1946-48) by post-tonal composer Stefan Wolpe (1902-72). The analytical methods consist of Set Class analysis (Allen Forte), the Effort Shape analysis of gesture (Rudolf von Laban), and the Time and Tone analysis of accordion performance (Joseph Macerollo). Wolpe played a leading role in the emergence of abstract expressionism among the painters, poets, dancers and composers of New York in the mid to late 1940s.Wolpe’s oeuvre reveals a unique way of composing in the post-tonal era. Chapter 1 provides the historical and stylistic contextualization of this particular study Displaced Spaces. Chapter 2 is concerned with the musical analysis, presented as pitch class and shape analysis. By nature, Wolpe’s pieces are best described as very physical, which explains the rationalization for the application of the gestural analysis in chapter 3. The Effort Shape graphic notation method by Rudolf von Laban (1879-1958) widely used in dance is applied to the musical gestures in Wolpe’s score. Wolpe’s overall title for the series of studies, Music for Any Instrument (1944-49), leaves the choice of instrument to the performer; as these studies require a polyphonic instrument, the classical accordion seems an appropriate choice. Laban’s principles as applied to Wolpe are compared to Macerollo’s Time and Tone analysis to implement gesture on one specific instrument. Battle Piece, a composition for piano solo which he began in 1943 is central to a change in Wolpe’s development: After finishing the first three movements of the piece, Wolpe explored new ideas in the study Displaced Spaces. The degree of coherence between the later parts of Battle Piece and Displaced Spaces is presented in chapter 4 focussing on new techniques that Wolpe was able to formulate through this “detour”. Chapter 5 as a conclusion brings together results from the set theory and the gestural analysis of this particular work in order to bridge the gap between the disciplines of music theory, performance and dance.

American Suppliers: The Role of Americans in the Perpetuation and Maintenance of the Postwar Black Market in Germany

Fasulo, Micheal 2011 December 1900 (has links)
Americans are curiously absent from the literature as forces in the black market prevailing in Germany after World War II. Aside from Rundell's study of failed currency control policy during the Second World War and the subsequent occupations of Germany and Japan, historians have failed to accord the American presence on the black market its proper status. They receive mention in narrative fashion, authors noting that Americans could make money on the black market, or relating a story about what a soldier bought or sold there. Then, like bit players in a movie, Americans recede from view, and Germans and displaced persons resume their places in the lead. This thesis has two objectives. Through support from the archival record, first, it demonstrates that Americans did in fact execute a specific function with respect to the maintenance and perpetuation of the black market - they were the market's suppliers. Second, by positing this role, this thesis attempts to correct a view of the black market as an essentially German experience, populated in the main by Germans and displaced persons. In so doing, I posit a schema of American illicit supply to Germans and displaced persons. This thesis argues that Americans operated as suppliers of illicit goods to the indigenous population. This supply occurred in three ways: Americans selling on the black market; misappropriation of materiel (usually food); and theft of goods from American installations. Furthermore, each type of supply was predicated upon the fulfillment of a certain condition. Americans sold on the black market when they were certain they could make a profit. Americans misappropriated US government property (usually food) as a consequence of a relationship with a German or displaced person; in practice, because those with access to American goods were young men, the relationships were only with women, and always included some gradation of intimacy. Germans and displaced persons committed larceny from American installations to procure goods for the black market, which insured handsome profits.

Approaching Psychosocial Adaptation to a Post-Crisis Environment through Case Studies of Javanese Disaster Survivors and Refugees in Sweden

Mattingly, Keith January 2015 (has links)
The psychosocial well-being of survivors of armed conflicts, forced displacement, and/or natural disasters is becoming more and more an integral component of holistic humanitarian response. Yet many organisations rely on broad, generalised manuals or guidelines which do not take into account the unique characteristics of societies and target populations. This paper describes the author’s research with disaster survivors in Java, Indonesia, and refugee in Sweden, aiming to characterise the process of recovery, adaptation and integration through beneficiaries’ own words. The author looks at how theory can be applied, such as whether a hierarchy of needs can be universally relevant, how the host Swedish society affects refugees’ experiences, which so-called “states of being” subjects experience, and how religion and cultural differences like individualism and collectivism influence one’s ability to regain psychosocial well-being. The author used both in-depth interviews and quantitative questionnaires to obtain data. Results showed an incredible level of resilience and positivity among all groups, though Indonesians reported family, spirituality and the community as major helping factors, while many refugees in Sweden pointed to their own individual determination and will to succeed. Many Indonesians identified economic livelihood as the biggest remaining gap, while refugees in Sweden spoke of language skills, educational qualifications and employment as keys to success and integration. Many challenges and gaps remain, especially for newly arrived refugees facing an increasingly difficult job market and fewer opportunities.

The research drew on the study of the environmental displaced of Haitians to Brazil from the earthquake that destroyed the country in 2010. The actors chosen for the analysis of cooperation for the protection of Haitians were: the Brazilian government, the UN system and civil society organizations, taking as an example “Missão Paz”, an organization linked to the Catholic Church, located in São Paulo that welcomes the world migrants. The research problem investigation was to what extent there was cooperation between actors for the protection of social rights of Haitians. The method chosen for the analysis of the research object was the qualitative, allowing the differentiated evaluation of specific documents and bibliographies on migration and Haiti. For purposes of this research used various national and international normative instruments for the protection of migrants worldwide. Research has shown that the experience of the environmental movement of Haitians forced the redefinition of Brazilian public policy towards foreigners and that cooperation between actors is still incipient in the national scene. The suggestion was reached that it is necessary to draw up a specific convention to protect these people, once the international regime of current protection relegates environmental shifted to a secondary plane.

Abstract: Discuss the experiences of homeless with abuse of alcohol in an institution Confessional. Subjects and Methods: Clinical-qualitative research with semi-structured Interview to open question. Data collection was in the Fraternity Toca de Assis. The research subjects had nine homeless, and used the criterion of saturation for the closing of the sample. Used the technique of analysis of thematic content for the formation of the categories approved by peers. Results: Extracted three papers: "Facilities and barriers in field research by the way of the use of qualitative methods in health informal institution"; "to fill an empty stomach.": the use of alcohol according to reports from ex-homeless"; "turned a beggar": reports of ex-homeless sheltered in a Confessional Institution in Brazil". Discussion: The choice of a field beyond the usual of institutionalized health professionals led a discussion about the challenges of entering the field, as well as data collection. We believe that reporting this experience add elements to the methodology chosen theorists. In reporting the experience of life of research subjects was emphatically a personal relationship with the subject the phenomenon of abuse of alcohol and the process of psychological deconstruction of identity. Conclusions: It can be built a new life mainly by the homeless. It seems that they want to leave the streets, even if this seems distant. / Mestrado / Ciencias Biomedicas / Mestre em Ciências Médicas
