Experimental research is a well known research method in biomedicine, technical and physical sciences. Different definitions of an experiment depend on the science where an experiment is used, on the goals of an experiment, how it is organized, etc. One of the urgent problems is the lack of information on planning an experimental research in education. The first part of the dissertation covers scientific research and document analysis that helps to emphasize the place of an experiment among other research methods, to present the variety of experiments, the phases of an experiment, to define the validity and reliability factors of an experiment, and to construct the model of planning of an experiment evaluating validity and reliability. The survey of dissertations defended in 1996-2005 showed that 30 percent of doctoral students use an experiment combining it with other research methods. An experiment is used in research by those doctoral students who come from education institutions preparing their specialists for education activities. Analysis showed that an experiment is often combined with other research results, most often with literature analysis, survey and monitoring. Survey with doctoral students in education showed that the attitude of doctoral students changes towards planning and implementation of research, and students are able to combine different research methods. Pirmojoje dalyje pristatoma mokslinės literatūros ir dokumentų analizė, kurios pagalba išryškinta eksperimento kaip tyrimo metodo vieta kitų tyrimų atžvilgiu, pristatyta eksperimentų įvairovė, eksperimento planavimo etapai, išskirti eksperimento tinkamumo bei patikimumo faktoriai bei sukonstruotas modelis eksperimento planavimui, įvertinant tinkamumą bei patikimumą. Empirinėje dalyje disertacijų, apgintų 1996-2005 metais, analizė, tęstinė doktorantų apklausa bei interviu parodė, kad apie 30 proc. disertantų naudoja eksperimentą, derindami jį su kitais tyrimo metodais. Disertaciniuose darbuose eksperimentą dažniausiai taiko tų aukštųjų mokyklų, kurios rengia specialistus ugdomajai veiklai, doktorantai. Anketinės edukologijos doktorantų apklausos rezultatai rodo, kad studijų eigoje keičiasi doktorantų požiūris į tyrimo planavimą ir vykdymą, studentai geba derinti įvairius tyrimo metodus, ryškėja tendencija naudoti kokybinius tyrimo metodus. Tačiau eksperimento planavimas yra painiojamas su disertacinio tyrimo planavimu bei tyrimo vykdymu. Bandomąjį eksperimentą atlieka ne visi, kai kurie prieš eksperimento atlikimą organizuoja tik apklausas. Planuojant tyrimą dažnai nėra numatomi duomenų apdorojimo metodai. This We Call Many Things: A Collection of PoemsPence, Charlotte 01 August 2011 (has links)
The “I” in lyric poetry has not only shifted expectations throughout time, but has been called many names including the authorial persona, the biographical self, or, in Helen Vendler’s term, the ‘fictive poetic self.’ Currently, the term “authorial ‘I’,” which denotes a first-person poem (or collection) that invites conflation between the author and speaker, such as with the Confessionals, continues to face critique as it has since the 1950s, critique toward The New York School poets and later toward the New Formalists, Language poets, and these days toward the New Thing poets who stress self as object. Furthermore, amidst the current fascination with recording private moments and distributing them to the public via Facebook, Twitter, wikis, and blogs, poetry that reveals personal details and conflates the identity between speaker and author can inadvertently be viewed as yet another commoditization of the self. Stephen Burt and other critics voice another concern that the authorial “I” is a “bourgeois illusion, an outmoded epiphenomenon” that is simply a construct of systems outside the self.
This issue regarding the authorial “I” is of particular importance to me since my dissertation is heir to Confessional poetry. My dissertation, This We Call Many Things, combines personal and scientific inquiries regarding evolution, specifically addresses the anatomical changes that enabled communal living within our species, as well as my father’s paranoid schizophrenia and subsequent chronic homelessness. The interdisciplinary weave of the personal with another subject in a tightly unified collection, which I term a “concept collection,” represents one strategy to subvert the authorial “I.” Post-millennial practitioners of such concept collections include C.D. Wright, Anne Carson, Louise Glück, as well as a growing number of other poets who merge the concept collection with the Confessional such as Joseph Harrington, Beth Bachmann, Karyna McGlynn, and Natasha Tretheway. The concept collection’s structure and subject matter suggests that the personal and political, the domestic and the international, and the private and public are not dichotomous subjects, but interconnected ones. This sense that all spheres are connected encouraged me to find the connection between my family’s personal story and the human race’s evolutionary story.

Two Essays on the Value of CashTippens, Timothy 2012 August 1900 (has links)
In the first essay, "The Source of Cash and Its Marginal Value," we study the relation between the source of firms' cash holdings and the value of the cash to shareholders. The marginal value of a dollar of cash holdings depends on the source of the dollar: $1.00 of cash has a value of $1.27 when it is from operations, $0.80 when from financing, and $0.46 when from investing. Within the same source, the marginal value of an added dollar of cash holdings is significantly higher than the absolute value of a subtracted dollar. Shareholders of financially constrained or distressed firms value incremental cash holdings from almost any source more highly than do shareholders of unconstrained or stronger firms, but differences in value remain across the sources of cash within each subsample. Agency costs and information asymmetry are two frictions that appear to have the largest impact upon the value of cash.
In the second essay, "Explanations for Diverging Values of Cash," we further explain the differing values of cash found in the first essay. Intertemporal relationships among the sources and uses of cash provide a rational basis for shareholders to assign different values of cash based on the source. Sources of cash provide information about likely uses of cash up to two to three years in the future, and many of the intertemporal relations are statistically and economically significant. Likewise, prior uses of cash relate significantly to later uses of cash. Past sources of cash inform investors about likely future sources, even up to five years into the future. The fact that different kinds of cash flows have predictive power for future cash flows helps explain the wide range of the values of cash associated with different sources.
